How Many Oculus Rift CV1 Sensors Do You Need?

Two sensors suit front-facing Rift CV1 play; Oculus recommends three for broader 360-degree or room-scale coverage. Learn how to place and connect them.

For the original Oculus Rift (CV1), two sensors are the standard choice for front-facing play. Choose three if you want wider 360-degree or room-scale coverage: Oculus recommends adding a rear sensor to reduce tracking occlusion. Oculus cautions that setups with more than three sensors may not work with a particular PC or play area. These recommendations apply to the CV1’s external sensor system, not newer inside-out-tracked headsets.

Choose two sensors for front-facing play, or three for wider coverage

Setup Best fit Trade-off
Two sensors Ordinary play while facing the sensors Simpler placement and fewer USB devices, but tracking can be less forgiving when you turn away or your body blocks the headset or controllers from the front sensors.
Three sensors Broader 360-degree or room-scale coverage A rear viewpoint can reduce occlusion, but requires another sensor position, cable routing, and adequate USB/controller capacity.

Oculus Support Center’s troubleshooting document, dated June 13, 2019, says: “We recommend using 3 sensors.” It also warns: “If you’re using more than 3 sensors, your setup may not work with your PC computer or play area.” Treat three as the recommended upper end for this decision rather than assuming extra sensors will improve tracking.

How to place two or three sensors

Two-sensor front-facing setup

Oculus’s guidance places the pair 3 to 6.5 feet (1 to 2 meters) in front of where you wear the headset. Keep the sensors’ view of the play area clear.

Three-sensor setup

Place the two front sensors 3 to 9 feet (1 to 2.7 meters) ahead of the wearing position. Put the third sensor directly behind one of the front sensors; Oculus specifies that it should be no more than 14 feet (4.3 meters) from the farthest front sensor. The rear viewpoint is intended to help when the front sensors lose sight of the headset or controllers.

Position and prepare each sensor

  • Point the glossy lens side toward the play area, remove any protective film, and angle the sensors toward the area where you will play.
  • Maintain an unobstructed line of sight between sensors and the headset/controllers. Furniture, your body, and other obstructions can interfere with tracking.
  • Oculus’s setup guide gives a minimum play area of 3 feet by 3 feet (1 meter by 1 meter). Clear objects you could bump into or trip over, including sensor cables; meeting the minimum dimensions does not guarantee that a larger or obstructed area will track well.

Plan USB connections and troubleshoot tracking

Sensor count alone does not determine whether a setup works reliably: USB bandwidth and which controller serves each port can matter. Oculus’s June 13, 2019 troubleshooting advice is to use USB 3.0 for sensors, but to try connecting one sensor to USB 2.0 if multiple sensors are on USB 3.0. If several sensors share one USB controller, try distributing them across different controllers or separating them; disconnecting other USB devices can also help.

Road to VR’s 2017 reporting on Oculus room-scale guidance describes a three-sensor arrangement using two USB 3.0 connections and one USB 2.0 connection to balance bandwidth. That is a configuration to try, not a guarantee: USB controller topology varies by computer, and port color alone does not establish which connection will solve a problem.

  • When used as a third sensor, requires an additional USB 2.0 or higher port
  • Oculus Sensor tracks constellations of IR LED's to translate your movements in VR
  • Ideal for most setups and its standard 1/4 20 mount works with most tripods.
  • 360 degree and room scale tracking are only supported for 3 sensor configurations.
  • This is an Oculus Rift Accessory - Oculus Rift headset sold separately

If a distant sensor cannot reach the computer, Road to VR reported in 2017 that Oculus recommended an active extension of about 16 feet and cautioned that substantially longer runs may cause problems. Compatibility can vary, so an active extension is not assured to work with every computer or cable. The same guide notes the sensor’s standard 1/4-inch tripod socket; a tripod or adjustable mount is optional when testing or securing a position.

Can two sensors provide 360-degree tracking?

Road to VR’s 2017 guide describes an experimental diagonal placement for trying 360-degree use with two sensors. It is an alternative to experiment with, not Oculus’s official placement guidance or an equivalent guarantee of the coverage of its recommended three-sensor arrangement. Oculus’s documented two-sensor placement is in front of the wearer.

Scope of this recommendation

This count and placement advice concerns the original Rift CV1 and its external tracking sensors. It should not be applied to Rift S, Quest, or other headsets that use inside-out tracking. Oculus’s cited sensor recommendations are from its June 13, 2019 troubleshooting document; the setup guide giving the minimum play-area dimensions is an undated archived document.
