How Many Hours Can a 128GB SD Card Record?

Recording time on a 128GB SD card depends on bitrate and camera mode. Compare manufacturer estimates and calculate a rough duration for your settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 128GB SD card can record from a few hours to well over 10 hours, depending chiefly on the camera’s selected bitrate and recording mode. For example, manufacturer estimates range from about 2 hours 45 minutes at 100 Mbps to 13 hours at 20 Mbps in specific Panasonic DC-BS1H MP4 modes. Those figures are examples, not guarantees for every camera or card.

Why a 128GB card has no single recording time

Video recording time depends mainly on how much data the camera writes each second. A higher bitrate uses more storage and shortens the time available; a lower bitrate uses less storage and extends it. The label “4K” alone is not enough to predict duration because cameras can offer different bitrates and formats at the same resolution.

For the most relevant estimate, look up the camera model and the exact recording mode in its manual. Manufacturer tables are approximate: actual duration can vary with shooting conditions and card type, and some modes may reduce available recording time.

Sony FDR-X3000 listed XAVC S HD mode 50 Mbps 310 minutes

The figures are not directly interchangeable: the tables cover different cameras, modes, formats and estimation methods. Panasonic’s DC-BS1H manual also cautions that certain loop or segmented recording modes can shorten available time. Estimate recording time from bitrate

For a rough estimate using a decimal 128GB capacity, divide the card’s capacity in bits by the video bitrate. Since one byte equals eight bits, the calculation in hours is:

At 100 Mbps, this gives about 2.84 hours before accounting for what the camera and file system consume. The estimate assumes all 128GB is available and excludes audio, metadata, file-system overhead and camera-specific differences. That is why actual manufacturer estimates can be lower: Fujifilm gives about 170 minutes at 100 Mbps, while Panasonic lists about 2 hours 45 minutes for its specified DC-BS1H modes.

Check card compatibility and speed before recording

Recording duration is only part of choosing a card. The camera must support the card’s format and capacity, and the card must meet the sustained write-speed requirement for the recording mode. There is no universal speed-class recommendation that fits every camera and mode, so check the camera’s manual rather than choosing by capacity alone.
