To estimate how many concurrent viewers a 24/7 YouTube stream needs to cover its running costs with ads, use the stream’s monthly costs, its ad-only revenue per 1,000 total live-stream views, and viewers’ average session length. Estimate from the average concurrent audience—not the peak—and treat the result as a scenario, not a promised payout.
Calculate your estimated break-even audience
For a 30-day month, a continuously running stream is live for 720 hours. Use:

- C = monthly operating cost, in the currency used for ad revenue
- R = ad-only revenue per 1,000 total live-stream views, in that same currency
- L = average viewer session length, in hours
Estimated average concurrent viewers = C × 1,000 × L ÷ (720 × R). Round the result up to the next whole viewer. This assumes the stream and audience are reasonably steady and that the session length and ad yield represent the period you are forecasting.
For example, with hypothetical inputs of $300 in monthly costs, $2 of ad revenue per 1,000 total live-stream views, and a two-hour average session, the estimate is 300 × 1,000 × 2 ÷ (720 × 2) = 208.34, or about 209 average concurrent viewers. Those figures are illustrative, not industry benchmarks; replace them with your own costs and channel data.

Choose an ad-revenue figure that matches the question
Use ad-only revenue for ad-only break-even
YouTube defines RPM as creator revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s share, but RPM may include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. It also includes views that were not monetized. CPM, by contrast, is an advertiser-side cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share. Neither figure automatically equals creator ad revenue per 1,000 total stream views. See YouTube’s explanation of RPM and CPM.
For this estimate, calculate ad revenue ÷ total live-stream views × 1,000 for a consistent historical period. If you only have blended RPM, you can use it as an approximation, but label the result as blended-revenue break-even rather than ad-only break-even.
Do not assume every viewer receives an ad
YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when live monetization is turned on; mid-rolls may be automatic or manual. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, and not every viewer or possible ad break is monetized. An estimate that assumes one paid ad for every viewer will overstate dependable income. YouTube also states that eligible creators receive 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue, but that share does not establish a fixed CPM, RPM, or payout. YouTube says creators need to be in the YouTube Partner Program and accept the Watch Page Monetization Module to earn Watch Page ad revenue on live streams. Its listed ad-revenue eligibility tier is 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified long-form public watch hours over 365 days or 10 million qualified public Shorts views over 90 days. These are eligibility requirements, not a viewer-income benchmark; check the current YouTube Studio terms because platform rules can change. YouTube does not guarantee how much a creator will earn or whether they will be paid. Treat the formula as a planning tool, then compare it with actual revenue and costs over time.
Build a complete monthly cost figure
Define what “running costs” means for your channel before calculating. Include the expenses the stream must cover, such as:
- Electricity for the computer or encoder, networking equipment, and any other dedicated devices
- Internet or connectivity charges attributable to the stream
- Equipment financing or depreciation, if you include those in your operating-cost measure
- Paid streaming services and labor
Estimate electricity from measured use
Electricity charges are based on energy use, not viewer count. Convert watts to kilowatts, multiply by operating hours to find kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply by your applicable price per kWh. A 24/7 stream runs 720 hours in a 30-day month. Where practical, measure the actual draw of the running computer, encoder, and networking gear. A device’s maximum rated power may differ from its operating draw. A compatible plug-in electricity monitor can help; some equipment, including certain 240-volt or hard-wired loads, may need another measurement method. Keep average viewers, peak viewers, and other income separate
The formula estimates the average concurrent audience needed across the month. A peak viewer count is a momentary high and cannot substitute for the average. Session duration matters because it affects how total views relate to concurrent viewers and potential ad opportunities.
This calculation is for ad revenue alone when R is ad-only. If you want to include Premium revenue, memberships, Super Chat, or other fan funding, calculate a separate blended-revenue scenario and identify what income sources it includes. Do not present a blended estimate as an ad-only result.
