Treat those as starting estimates, not a universal requirement; allow for drying time, delayed laundry, and diapers temporarily out of rotation. The count also depends on whether you use complete diapers or absorbent inserts with reusable covers.
How many newborn cloth diapers should you buy?
Start with the number of cloth changes you expect each day, multiply by the days between washes, then add a practical buffer for laundry and drying. Kanga Care’s undated newborn planning chart assumes 10–12 changes a day and recommends the following counts:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Wash schedule | Kanga Care estimate | How to use the estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | 12 diapers | A minimal rotation under the chart’s 10–12-change assumption; add capacity if drying is slow or a wash may be delayed. |
| Every other day | 24 diapers | A chart-based starting count. Lalabye Baby recommends approximately 28–30, using an assumption of 14–15 daily changes. |
| Every three days | 36 diapers | A larger rotation for the longer interval before washing. Kanga Care advises against waiting longer than three days between washes. |
These are vendor planning recommendations, not a clinical standard. The difference between 24 and 28–30 for every-other-day washing reflects different assumptions about daily changes and the buffer to keep on hand. See Kanga Care’s newborn stash guide and Lalabye Baby’s guide for their respective recommendations.

A practical estimate is:
Expected cloth changes per day × days between washes + a buffer for laundry and drying.

Mom Loves Best suggests calculating daily changes × days between washes plus one buffer day. Its example—11 changes a day and a two-day wash interval—comes to 33 diapers. That is one editorial planning method, not a validated rule for every household. Adjust it to the number of changes actually done in cloth and how quickly your diapers dry.
How many diapers do newborns use each day?
The daily-change assumptions in stash guides vary. Kanga Care plans around 10–12 changes per day, while Lalabye Baby uses 14–15 for its newborn recommendation. Pampers’ guide, updated June 18, 2026, gives a general estimate of 8–12 diaper changes daily in the first weeks, but it addresses disposable diaper planning rather than cloth-stash sizing. Use these figures as context, not as a promise of your baby’s exact routine.

- ABSORBENT: Designed to be extra-absorbent with prefolded 3-ply center panel that keeps your little one dry and happy.
- BIRDSEYE WEAVE FABRIC: Lightweight fabric made from many small fine yarns, woven in a pattern that is soft and absorbent.
- VERSATILE: After using as a cloth diaper or liner, continue to use as a burp cloth, cleaning/dusting rag, car washing cloth and more.
- EASY CARE: Wash before first use. Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Use only non-chlorine bleach when needed. Tumble dry low or hang to dry.
Diaper counts are also different from wet-diaper health guidance. California WIC says that after day five a newborn will have at least six wet diapers, and that stool counts vary. That is a health-monitoring indicator, not a count of all diaper changes or a way to calculate a cloth stash. See California WIC’s breastfeeding newborn chart.

All-in-one and pocket diapers
Count one complete diaper for every change. After each wet or soiled change, the whole diaper goes into the wash, so the stash total is close to the number of changes you need to cover between laundry loads, plus your buffer.

Prefolds, flats, or fitted diapers with covers
Plan one clean absorbent layer—such as a prefold, flat, or fitted diaper—for every change. A waterproof cover can be reused if it remains clean, so you generally do not need one cover per change. Kanga Care specifically notes that a fresh absorbent interior is needed at each change; Lalabye Baby likewise describes reusing a clean cover.
Cover counts depend on the system and routine. Lalabye Baby describes 8–10 covers for its broader birth-to-potty-training system, along with absorbency for 24–30 changes. That is a vendor-specific system recommendation, not a universal newborn-only quantity. Confirm that the chosen diapers fit your newborn before buying a large stash.

What if you plan to use cloth part-time?
Calculate only the changes you expect to handle in cloth. For example, if cloth will cover some daytime changes while disposable diapers cover the rest, base the stash on those cloth changes and your laundry interval rather than automatically buying a full-time quantity. Kanga Care says 8–12 diapers may suffice for part-time use, depending on how many changes are cloth; treat that as a starting range and tailor it to your schedule.

What should you account for before buying?
- Wash interval: A daily wash needs fewer items in rotation than washing every other or every three days.
- Drying time: If diapers take longer to dry, keep enough clean ones available while damp items finish drying.
- Delayed laundry: Add a buffer if work, illness, or limited laundry access could postpone a load.
- System design: AIOs and pockets require complete diapers; cover systems require fresh absorbency at each change but may reuse clean covers.
- Newborn fit: Sizing and fit differ by product, and the cited stash guides do not establish a brand-neutral fit comparison.
For a full-time stash, 24 is a reasonable chart-based starting estimate for every-other-day washing, while 28–30 provides more capacity under Lalabye Baby’s higher daily-change assumption. Choose the count by matching your expected cloth changes and laundry routine, rather than treating any one number as right for every newborn.
