Researchers at Georgia Tech reported making magnetite replicas of spiky sunflower pollen that retained the grains’ shape and showed two distinct behaviors: they adhered to polystyrene and were attracted to nickel film. The work, published in 2013, demonstrated a laboratory material—not a proven medical or commercial product.
How can pollen stick to a surface?
The reported replicas combined a pollen-like shape with magnetic material, and those features mattered in different ways. The spiky shape was associated with adhesion to polystyrene through van der Waals forces—weak attractions between nearby surfaces. Separately, the magnetite material was attracted to metallic surfaces such as nickel film.

These effects should not be treated as the same mechanism: the report links shape to surface adhesion and magnetism to attraction toward metal. It describes the observed behavior but does not provide numerical adhesion measurements or enough detail to compare the strength of the interactions.
How did researchers make magnetic replicas of pollen?
Kenneth Sandhage and colleagues at Georgia Tech used sunflower pollen as a sacrificial template. According to Chemistry World’s November 27, 2013 report, the process coated the grains with iron oxide by reacting an iron(III) isopropoxide precursor with sporopollenin, the pollen’s tough outer coating.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Precision compatibility】 Specially designed for the Roborock QV35A/QV35S, Qrevo MaxV, Qrevo S, Qrevo Plus, Qrevo Pro, Qrevo Curv, Qrevo Edge【Not For Q Revo】. The filter adopts the same magnetic suction structure as the original, ensuring a perfect fit. Please confirm your device model before purchasing.
- 【High-efficiency filtration】 The latest upgraded PTFE air coating technology can efficiently filter 99.9% of dust, pollen, and micron sized particles. The tightly sealed design effectively prevents dust from entering the motor and extends the service life of the equipment.
- 【Washable and long-lasting】 High quality environmentally friendly materials support repeated washing and use. It is recommended to clean the filter screen every 2 weeks (after disassembly, lightly tap and rinse), and replace the filter screen every 6-12 months to maintain the best performance of the equipment.
- 【Easy installation and maintenance】 Adopting precise buckle design, installation and replacement can be easily completed without tools. The simple maintenance process allows you to quickly restore the purification efficiency of the filter, ensuring that the robot's suction is long-lasting and stable.
- 【Value package guarantee】 The set includes 12 high-efficiency washable filters to meet long-term usage needs. We provide comprehensive customer service, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We will promptly provide you with satisfactory solutions.
- Coat the pollen: Iron oxide layers formed on the grains through the reaction with sporopollenin.
- Remove the biological template: The coated grains were heated to 600°C to burn away the original pollen, leaving replicas with the pollen’s shape.
- Convert the iron oxide: Further thermal treatments changed hematite (Fe₂O₃) into magnetite (Fe₃O₄), the magnetic material described in the report.
The approach used the original grain as a mold rather than trying to reproduce its detailed form by shaping the final material directly.
What could adhesive magnetic particles be used for?
The 2013 report pointed to drug delivery, catalysis and sensing as areas where adhesive microparticles might be relevant. These were proposed application contexts, not demonstrated uses of the sunflower-pollen replicas. The report does not establish clinical testing, validated performance in those fields, or commercial availability.

What the 2013 result establishes—and what it does not
The work was identified as W. B. Goodwin et al., published in Chemistry of Materials in 2013 (DOI: 10.1021/cm402226w). The reported findings establish a shape-retaining magnetite replica and describe its adhesion to polystyrene and attraction to nickel film.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe available report does not state quantitative adhesion values, detailed experimental conditions beyond the heating step, or controls that would show how much each feature contributed. Nor does it establish later commercialization or application validation. The significance is therefore a materials-science demonstration: a biological template can yield a magnetic replica whose shape and composition give it distinct interactions with surfaces.
