Individual attributes describe narrower capabilities; position, role, progression archetype, abilities, and CPU decision-making traits are separate pieces of the picture. EA has not published a complete current formula showing how every attribute contributes to every player’s OVR, so the most useful way to compare players is to start with the job you want them to do—not the overall number alone.
What Madden ratings represent
A roster screen puts a player’s OVR beside a collection of individual attributes. Those numbers answer different questions. OVR is a compact comparison figure. Attributes indicate particular strengths or weaknesses that matter to particular roles. A single summary can be useful for sorting a roster, but it cannot tell you everything you need to know about whether a player fits your scheme or the way you intend to use him.

EA’s official materials do not provide a complete current position-by-position OVR equation or a table of universal attribute weights. That means a claim such as “one point of speed is worth exactly this much OVR” or “every player at this position is ranked using the same published weights” is not supported by the official information described here. Treat OVR as a comparison aid, not as a transparent formula you can reverse-engineer from the display.

This distinction matters most when two players have different strengths. A higher OVR may make one player the obvious choice for a quick roster sort, while the other may have an attribute that better supports a specific assignment. The appropriate choice depends on the role, the game mode, and the player’s other modifiers—not on a universal rule that one displayed number always decides.

How to read individual attributes
Attributes are narrower measures of player capability, rather than alternate names for OVR. EA’s Madden NFL 25 manual provides historical examples of how the series described them: speed, agility, jumping, and catching among the considerations for a wide receiver; blocking ratings for offensive linemen; quarterback accuracy; and defensive-line pass-rush moves. These examples help explain why a player’s profile is more informative than one summary number, but they are Madden NFL 25-era documentation—not a current, complete list of attribute weights or a promise that every later game evaluates a role in exactly the same way.
Use an attribute by asking what action or responsibility you need the player to handle. For a receiver, the historical examples point to physical movement and catching as relevant categories to inspect. For an offensive lineman, the manual’s example directs attention to blocking. For a quarterback, accuracy is one of the cited categories; for a defensive lineman, the manual identifies pass-rush moves. These are illustrations of role-based reading, not an exhaustive ranking of the best attributes for those positions in Madden NFL 26 or Madden NFL 27.
When a player’s OVR and a particular attribute seem to tell different stories, do not assume one of them is wrong. They describe different levels of information. The overall number compresses a player into a summary; the attribute helps explain one dimension of that player. To make a decision, identify the particular task first, then inspect the attributes that relate to it and weigh the overall as a broader signal.
Why position and role affect comparisons
Position is the first filter because the same ability can have different practical value in different jobs. EA’s historical Madden NFL 25 manual described ratings groupings that considered a player’s position and player type, with different physical and intangible considerations. That is useful evidence that role-sensitive valuation has been part of Madden Franchise, but it does not establish the exact OVR calculation in a current release.

Position alone may still be too broad. Two players listed at the same position can be intended for different responsibilities, and a scheme or play style can make one particular strength more useful to you. The official examples support inspecting role-relevant attributes; they do not support a universal “most important attribute” list that applies across positions, editions, modes, and schemes.
For a practical comparison, use this order:
- Define the job. Decide what you need the player to do in your lineup or gameplay approach. Compare players who can reasonably fill that same role.
- Inspect the relevant attributes. Use the roster’s individual ratings to compare specific capabilities related to that job. Treat historical manual examples as context, not as a current official weighting chart.
- Check the broader summary. Use OVR to understand the game’s overall comparison signal, while recognizing that EA has not published the complete current formula.
- Separate base ratings from other systems. In Franchise, consider whether progression, abilities, coach boosts, or CPU traits are affecting the question you are trying to answer.
- Choose for the intended use. A player with a lower summary can still make sense if the attributes and development path fit the role better; the available official sources do not establish that this is always the case or quantify a universal advantage.
This is a decision process, not a hidden formula. It avoids false precision while making the roster information more useful than simply selecting whichever player has the higher OVR.
How archetypes affect Franchise progression
In Madden NFL 26 Franchise, archetypes are relevant to how a player develops. EA says spending skill points boosts attributes in ways that better match the player’s selected archetype. Its example contrasts a Scrambler quarterback with a Field General quarterback, whose progression is oriented toward different kinds of development.

It does not reveal which attributes receive what numerical weight in the OVR calculation, nor does it prove that an archetype will make a player better for every team or user. When planning development, think about whether the archetype aligns with the role you want the player to grow into. Do not treat the archetype as a published conversion chart between skill points and OVR.

Keep the game-year qualification in mind: the archetype and progression example is documented for Madden NFL 26. EA’s Madden NFL 27 gameplay deep dive, dated June 4, 2026, establishes that a newer game exists, but the material described here does not confirm that every Madden NFL 26 progression detail carried forward unchanged into Madden NFL 27.
Traits are not the same as attributes
Madden NFL 26 introduced 50 player traits at launch. EA describes these traits as influences on how CPU-controlled players make decisions, not as direct numerical boosts to on-field outcomes. The distinction is important: an attribute is a capability measure, while a trait concerns decision-making behavior by the AI. Seeing a trait should not lead you to read it as if it were another attribute or a guaranteed performance modifier.
EA’s Madden NFL 26 Gameplay Deep Dive put the distinction plainly: “They have no impact on outcomes at all – they simply allow AI players to differentiate themselves from each other by how they uniquely make decisions on the field.” The statement is about Madden NFL 26 player traits. It does not mean attributes, abilities, or other systems have no gameplay effects; it describes what EA says traits do.
EA used Josh Allen’s “Run Over” trait as an example. The company said 54% of Allen’s scrambles ended with at least three yards after contact over the prior two NFL seasons, and cited that figure as rationale for the trait. This is EA’s stated basis for the Madden NFL 26 example, not an independently validated NFL statistic in the available account. The figure describes a particular player, outcome definition, and two-season window; it should not be generalized into a rule about all quarterbacks or all traits.

Abilities and coach boosts can change the numbers
Abilities and coach boosts are distinct from a player’s base attribute profile and from CPU decision-making traits. Some abilities can provide specified attribute boosts, so a displayed or effective rating may be affected by more than a player’s underlying attributes. In Franchise, keep track of which system is responsible for a change rather than attributing every difference to the player’s base rating or OVR formula.
EA’s November 19, 2025 Madden NFL 26 title update changed the attribute-based coach abilities Field General, Work Horse, and Mano-A-Mano from +4 to +7 per tier. This is a patch-specific change to those named abilities, not a universal rule for attribute boosts. Later updates may alter the values, and the figure should not be carried forward as a confirmed Madden NFL 27 value.
EA also says Franchise simulation weighs many per-play factors and that even small tuning changes can have a large effect on simulated results. That is a reminder that a player’s attributes are only part of a larger simulation context. It does not provide a formula for predicting a particular play or establish that one rating will dominate across every matchup.
What the current OVR information does—and does not—establish
EA’s Madden NFL 27 deep dive is dated June 4, 2026, but it does not supply the complete formula for how every attribute contributes to every player’s OVR. The official materials described here also do not provide an authoritative current chart of positional weights. Accordingly, exact claims about hidden weights, fixed attribute-to-OVR conversions, or universal position cutoffs should be treated cautiously unless EA publishes them for the relevant game and mode.

Historical documentation can explain the design idea that position and player type matter, and current Franchise materials can explain archetype progression, traits, and ability changes. Those pieces answer useful questions about how to interpret the roster, but they do not combine into a complete current OVR equation. A detailed simulation system likewise does not reveal the player-rating formula merely because it uses many factors.
If the exact formula matters to your decision, the most accurate answer from these official sources is that it is not fully specified. You can still make a sound player comparison by focusing on position, intended role, relevant attributes, and any mode-specific progression or boosts that apply, while treating OVR as a summary rather than a complete explanation.
A quick checklist for choosing between players
- Same position and role? Compare like with like before using either OVR or a single attribute to decide.
- What capability matters for your assignment? Look at the corresponding individual ratings rather than assuming the overall captures your priority.
- Is the evidence game-year specific? Madden NFL 25 manual examples, Madden NFL 26 systems, the November 2025 update, and Madden NFL 27 coverage should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Are you looking at Franchise development? Consider archetype fit and distinguish skill-point progression from a base rating.
- Is a trait involved? For Madden NFL 26, read it as CPU decision-making logic, not a direct attribute or outcome bonus.
- Does an ability or coach boost apply? Check the game version and mode, because an update to a named ability is not a general attribute rule.
- Are you trying to infer a formula? Do not assign a precise OVR weight or threshold that EA has not published in the cited official material.
The simplest reliable interpretation is to use OVR for a fast overview and attributes for the specific job. Then account for progression, traits, abilities, and the game year separately. That gives you a more useful comparison without pretending the displayed overall is a publicly documented equation.
