Mac buttons have shifted from bold, simple controls to shaded gray designs, glossy Aqua gradients and later, simpler treatments. The clearest documented landmarks span 1984 to the early and mid-2000s; the sources do not establish dates or descriptions for every later change.
What the historical timeline shows
Macworld’s September 2026 article describes its gallery as covering 42 years and 11 button-style changes. That count and scope are Macworld’s characterization; its article text identifies selected milestones rather than detailing all 11 transitions.

| 1984 | Bold | Macworld calls this the original button style; it does not give a technical specification in the article text. |
| 1986 | Very simple | Macworld says the bold style shifted to a simpler button. |

| 2000 announcement; early and mid-2000s styling | Luminous, semi-transparent elements and glossy gradients | Apple described Aqua’s buttons as luminous and semi-transparent in its January 2000 announcement. Macworld retrospectively places glossy gradient styling in the early and mid-2000s. |

What made Aqua buttons distinctive?
Apple announced Mac OS X and its Aqua interface on January 5, 2000. The contemporary press release described “luminous and semi-transparent elements such as buttons, scroll bars and windows” alongside fluid animation intended to enhance the user experience. This was a design direction for the interface, not just a change to button color.

Why the style changed—and what cannot be concluded
The documented sequence is a change in visual ornament: bold, then simple, then gray, then luminous and glossy, followed by a return toward simpler buttons. It does not prove that one generation was objectively easier to use, more accessible or more attractive than another. Those judgments depend on context and preference, and the cited sources do not establish a usability winner.
Nor do the article’s text descriptions provide a complete year-by-year history. Macworld reports 11 changes in the gallery, but its text does not name or date every one. The safe conclusion is a broad visual arc, not a fully verified inventory of all transitions.

How macOS buttons are described today
Apple’s current Human Interface Guidelines treat buttons as functional controls rather than prescribing one historical look. A macOS push button may display text, a symbol, an icon, an image or a combination. The guidance also covers default buttons and tooltips, and recommends clear labels and familiar symbols. These are present-day usage guidelines, not evidence about the size or behavior of buttons in earlier Mac systems.
