Lunar samples are planned, collected, transported, and curated as one continuous chain of custody. The goal is not simply to bring rocks back: it is to preserve their scientific context, limit material introduced by spacecraft or people, and document every step so researchers can judge what a sample can reliably reveal. Apollo established many of the handling practices; Artemis planning adds challenges around polar volatiles and cold storage.
How does a lunar sample move from the Moon to a laboratory?
Collection plans begin with the science questions and continue through transport and storage. NASA’s Artemis curation lead participates in sampling-plan development, including planning for collection, handling, transport, and storage. The tools and strategies used on Apollo missions also changed with experience, so there was no single method used identically on every mission.

Collection is designed around later analysis
A sample’s value can depend on more than its composition. Its location, orientation, relationship to nearby material, and the way it was collected may all matter. Handling plans therefore aim to preserve useful context as well as the material itself, while limiting contact with substances that could affect later measurements.

Transport plans are not the same as flown procedures
A NASA planning paper describes an Artemis south-pole transfer architecture in which samples would move from the lunar surface to the Human Landing System, then to Gateway and Orion, before return to Earth, recovery, and rapid transport to NASA’s Johnson Space Center curation facility. In that paper, the time samples would spend at Gateway was undetermined. This is a planning architecture, not a record of a completed flight sequence.
What kinds of contamination are scientists trying to control?
For lunar curation, contamination usually means Earth-origin material or other introduced substances that could alter a sample or complicate interpretation of its measurements. “Contamination knowledge” is broader than cleaning visible dust from a rock: it involves characterizing materials and environments that might contact or affect samples, then recording that information.

Potential sources include equipment, people, and volatile compounds
NASA’s Artemis planning paper identifies particles from vehicles, spacesuits, and crew, as well as volatile contamination. Near polar volatile deposits, compounds from leaks, propellants, waste, or other mission operations may be especially relevant. The possible effects depend on the sample and the science being done; no single procedure is established as removing every possible contaminant.
Controls are selected and characterized
The Artemis paper describes methods to learn what may reach a sample, including witness plates or coupons, biological swabbing, and analysis of flight spares. It recommends characterizing tools, containers, vehicles, and suits before, during, and after flight. The impact of different contamination sources on chemical reactions and isotopic measurements still needs to be determined, so contamination control is a combination of prevention, measurement, and documentation—not a guarantee that all risk is eliminated.

How are lunar samples stored and handled after return?
NASA’s curation descriptions cover controlled cleanrooms, restricted contact materials, specialized containers, nitrogen-filled cabinets or gloveboxes, and step-by-step work procedures. These measures reduce unwanted contact and help preserve material for analyses that may not yet exist. They are specialist systems; ordinary containers or household protective equipment are not substitutes.
Storage conditions depend on the sample
Apollo samples are handled in controlled environments, including nitrogen-filled cabinets. NASA’s account of Apollo curation names Teflon, aluminum, and stainless steel among materials used in its laboratory context. Contact materials and procedures are chosen and controlled so researchers can account for what might have reached a sample.

For Artemis, NASA is developing cold-curation capability for material from permanently shadowed regions that may contain ice or other temperature-sensitive volatiles. Warmer temperatures could alter such material. Below-freezing or cryogenic handling is an evolving capability for relevant samples, not a condition applied to every lunar sample; the cited planning material does not settle all final storage constraints.
Records travel with the sample’s history
NASA curation records include sample identity, containers, waste, photographs, orientation, and work history. Staff describe inventorying and numbering samples, weighing and photographing them, preserving orientation, and recording work performed by researchers who receive allocations. Returned material comes back with its handling history, helping later researchers assess whether it is suitable for another analysis.

The core aim—preserving samples and making their handling understandable—continues, but the operating environments and preservation challenges differ. Apollo practice is established and refined through missions; the cited Artemis material describes plans and capabilities still under development.
| Aspect | Apollo collection and curation | Artemis planning and preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Operating setting | Apollo sampled sunlit equatorial and mid-latitude regions; returned samples entered the Johnson curation system, as described in NASA’s planning and curation sources. | The cited south-pole planning paper addresses permanently shadowed regions, severe cold, and low-angle lighting. |
| Preservation emphasis | Controlled cabinets, restricted materials, and detailed records; Apollo also had a separate Earth-protection quarantine framework. | Established contamination controls continue, with added attention to volatile contamination and possible sub-zero or cryogenic preservation. |
| Status of procedures | Collection and curation practices were refined over the Apollo program and are documented in NASA’s reports and curation accounts. | Cold-curation capabilities and detailed temperature constraints remain in development in the cited NASA material; the described transfer chain is a planning architecture. |
NASA’s 2009-record Technical Reports Server paper reports that the six Apollo missions that landed on the Moon returned 2,196 samples totaling 382 kilograms. The scale of that collection reflects a program in which sampling strategies and tools evolved, rather than a single unchanged procedure.

Apollo-era quarantine addressed a different contamination direction from modern sample-integrity controls: it was intended to guard against the possibility that lunar material might pose a biological risk to Earth. NASA’s historical account describes the Lunar Receiving Laboratory as isolating both astronauts and samples, with a biological barrier and vacuum system; the sample operations area used gloveboxes.
The Apollo 12 mission report groups its back-contamination plan into three broad phases: in-flight procedures; recovery, isolation, and transport; and quarantine with preliminary analysis. This historical planetary-protection rationale should not be confused with the present-day effort to prevent Earth-origin substances from changing a lunar sample.
