You usually do not need to charge a new laptop for a set number of hours before using it. Follow the setup instructions for your exact model: some laptops are ready to use out of the box, while a manufacturer may recommend charging to 100% after first use. That is a charge-level target, not a timed first-charge requirement.
Do you need to charge a new laptop before using it?
Not necessarily. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not set a universal first-charge duration, such as two hours or overnight. Whether you can start using the laptop immediately depends on its model and the maker’s instructions.

For example, Apple says a new MacBook Air arrives with a charged battery and can be used immediately. Microsoft recommends charging a Surface to 100% after first use, but does not specify how many hours that should take. MacBook Air: you can start using it immediately
Apple’s MacBook Air setup instructions say the battery comes charged, so you can use the new Mac immediately. Apple adds that you can connect it to power to fully charge the battery or if you plan to transfer data to the new Mac.

Apple’s MacBook Air charging guide describes charging through MagSafe 3 or compatible USB-C connections. It does not require waiting a specific number of hours before first use. These directions apply to MacBook Air, not every laptop.
Surface: charge to 100% after first use
Microsoft’s Surface battery-care guidance recommends fully charging the device to 100% after first use or extended storage. It gives no time estimate, so do not interpret that advice as a requirement to leave the laptop plugged in for a fixed number of hours. This is Surface-specific guidance.

What to do when you unbox your laptop
- Check the setup guide for your exact model. Look for the manufacturer’s instructions on first use and charging.
- Start using it if the instructions allow. If the battery has enough charge, you do not have to wait for an arbitrary time limit.
- Plug it in if the maker recommends a target charge. If the instruction is to charge to 100%, follow the charge level rather than guessing at a number of hours.
- Use the included charger or one explicitly listed as compatible. Charging methods and compatibility can vary by model; Apple, for instance, identifies MagSafe and compatible USB-C charging for MacBook Air.
Do you need to charge it to 100% or leave it charging overnight?
Only follow a 100% recommendation when it comes from the manufacturer for your model. Microsoft gives that advice for Surface after first use or extended storage; Apple says MacBook Air can be used immediately. Neither source establishes a universal need for an overnight charge, a full discharge before charging, or a special battery-conditioning cycle.

First-charge instructions are separate from long-term battery care. Microsoft advises Surface owners to avoid extreme high temperatures and prolonged storage at a high charge. Its stated operating range of 32°F to 95°F (0°C to 35°C) applies to Surface devices, not laptops generally.

Apple explains that Mac laptop battery capacity declines as the battery chemically ages, with temperature history and charging patterns among the factors involved. Its battery-health guidance concerns Mac laptops with Apple silicon and does not mean a new laptop needs a special initial charging routine.
