How Long-Duration Energy Storage Helps Balance Wind and Solar Power

Long-duration energy storage shifts surplus wind and solar electricity to later periods. Here’s how it works, what the 10-hour definition means, and where its limits lie.

Long-duration energy storage (LDES) helps balance wind and solar by charging when electricity is plentiful and releasing it later, when renewable output falls or demand rises. It moves electricity through time; it does not generate energy, capture every surplus, or replace transmission, flexible generators, and demand response. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) defines LDES for its program as storage capable of delivering electricity for 10 or more hours, though other analyses draw the boundary differently.

How storage shifts renewable electricity to a later time

Grid operators must keep electricity supply and demand in balance as conditions change. Wind and solar output can vary with weather and time of day, while electricity demand follows its own pattern. When available renewable generation exceeds what the grid can use at that moment, operators may reduce generation—a practice called curtailment. A storage system can charge during some of those high-supply periods, hold energy, and discharge it when generation declines or demand is higher. DOE describes storage as a way to use electricity later, including “when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining.” DOE: Storage

Solar makes the time shift easy to picture: a system may charge during sunny daytime hours and discharge after sunset, including during evening demand. Wind does not follow the same predictable daily pattern; its output varies with weather, so the opportunity to charge and the timing of discharge can be less regular. In either case, storage can help align available generation with when electricity is needed. Its usefulness depends on the system, its operating conditions, and what other resources are available. Charging is not the same as preserving every unit of electricity intact. Energy is lost in conversion and retrieval, so a system generally returns less electricity than it took in. Storage may reduce some curtailment, but it cannot guarantee that every surplus can be stored: the system needs available charging power and unused energy capacity, and it must be able to deliver the electricity when and where it is useful.

What “long duration” means—and what it does not

DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations uses a clear program definition: LDES systems can deliver electricity for 10 or more hours. That definition appears on a DOE program page published in 2023; it is not a universal boundary used by every study or grid planner. DOE: Long-Duration Energy Storage

Time-scale labels depend on the framework and the job being considered. NREL’s July 2024 program summary analyzes LDES in an approximately 10–100-hour range and treats seasonal storage separately. A system classed as long-duration under one definition is not necessarily designed to hold energy for several days or across seasons. NREL: Accelerated Energy Storage Deployment in RELAC Countries: Program Summary Report (July 2024)

Duration is a system configuration, not an unchanging property of a technology. A useful first approximation is energy capacity divided by discharge power: for example, MWh divided by MW gives hours. Increasing stored energy relative to the system’s discharge rating can extend the time it supplies power; a high power rating alone does not mean the system can sustain that output for long. DOE distinguishes energy capacity—the amount stored, commonly measured in kWh or MWh—from power capacity, the rate at which it can be released, measured in kW or MW. Both dimensions matter when sizing storage for a grid need. DOE/NREL: Solar Integration: Solar Energy and Storage Basics

How to match storage to a grid-balancing need

A storage project should be designed around the gap it is meant to address, not around the label “long duration” alone. Planners need to consider how much electricity must be shifted, how quickly it must be delivered, when and how often the gap occurs, and whether the system can be sited where it will help. A project built for regular intraday shifting faces a different operating pattern from one intended to cover a multi-day shortfall or seasonal mismatch.

  1. Identify the timing of the mismatch. Determine whether the need is a predictable shift, such as moving some daytime solar generation to evening, or a less regular shortfall tied to weather. Wind’s weather-driven variability makes its pattern less directly tied to the clock.
  2. Set the discharge power and energy requirement separately. Power capacity describes how quickly the system can provide electricity; energy capacity describes how much it can provide before it is depleted. A system can meet one requirement and still fall short on the other.
  3. Account for conversion losses. The electricity delivered later will be lower than the electricity used to charge the system. The amount of loss depends on the technology and configuration; the cited DOE material does not establish one efficiency figure that applies to all LDES.
  4. Check the site and conversion pathway. Water, landscape, geology, and the need to convert electricity into another form—such as heat or hydrogen—and back can affect what is practical. A technically suitable design may not be suitable at a particular location.
  5. Assess the system around the storage asset. Transmission, flexible generation, and demand response also help manage variation. Storage is most useful as one part of a system plan rather than as a stand-alone guarantee of supply.

Which technologies can provide long-duration storage?

DOE’s August 2024 assessment groups LDES into four broad families: electrochemical, chemical, mechanical, and thermal storage. The labels describe different ways to store energy, not a ranking from best to worst. Performance, economics, maturity, siting, and duration vary among technologies and depend on configuration, so comparisons need a specific application and common assumptions. DOE: Achieving the Promise of Low-Cost Long Duration Energy Storage (August 2024)

Technology family Examples in DOE materials What to assess for a particular project
Electrochemical Flow batteries and several battery chemistries; DOE demonstration examples include vanadium flow batteries and solid-flow batteries. Energy-to-power sizing, discharge duration, conversion losses, cost assumptions, operating life, and technology maturity.
Chemical Bidirectional hydrogen storage; one DOE demonstration example combines hydrogen and batteries. The full conversion path, including electricity-to-hydrogen and hydrogen-to-electricity steps, and whether the intended service is multi-hour shifting or a longer time scale.
Mechanical Compressed-air energy storage and pumped-storage hydropower. Site and resource requirements, including geology, water, landscape, permitting, and implementation time.
Thermal Particle-based thermal storage and electric thermal storage. The system configuration, the service it is designed to provide, and the conversion steps needed to deliver useful energy.

The table identifies technologies and decision factors, not a claim that every example has the same performance. The DOE assessment does not provide a single directly comparable set of efficiency, lifetime, or cost values that can establish a universal winner across these families. Those figures should be compared for the specific design, location, operating pattern, and analysis assumptions.

Pumped-storage hydropower: established, but site-dependent

Pumped-storage hydropower uses electricity to pump water uphill and later releases it through turbines to generate electricity. DOE describes the technology as mature and well tested, while noting important constraints: suitable landscapes and reservoirs are required, permitting and implementation can take a long time, and initial capital needs are high. Those requirements can make it a strong fit in some locations and impractical in others; maturity does not remove siting or project-development limits. What DOE demonstration projects illustrate

DOE’s awarded-projects page lists demonstrations that show how different storage approaches are being configured for extended discharge. These are announced demonstration projects; their listed duration or award does not by itself establish that a system is operating or commercially available. The page names Sandia National Laboratories, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Invinity Energy Systems among participants. A separate entry names CMBlu Energy as a solid-flow-battery manufacturer working with Argonne and Idaho National Laboratories. DOE: Awarded Projects for the Long-Duration Energy Storage Demonstrations Lab Call

DOE-listed demonstration example Duration or configuration stated on the page How to interpret it
Particle-based thermal energy storage 18-hour duration A stated duration for the demonstration example, not a performance guarantee for thermal storage generally.
Clean hydrogen-battery hybrid 24+ and 72+ hour configurations Two listed configurations illustrate that system duration depends on design; they do not make every hydrogen system a multi-day resource.
Vanadium flow battery demonstration 24-hour discharge duration A project description, not a universal duration for flow batteries.

The same DOE page describes five LDES Demonstrations Lab Call projects with a combined $30 million in federal funding. That figure refers to the lab-call awards, not to total project costs, completed construction, or a current count of operating installations. Project status can change, so the page is the appropriate source for its award descriptions rather than evidence of present commercial deployment.

What the cost projections do—and do not—show

DOE’s August 2024 assessment models potential innovation outcomes; its figures are not today’s market prices. Across the top 10% of cost-reducing innovation portfolios and technologies, DOE reports modeled levelized-cost-of-storage reductions and corresponding costs as follows. The figures describe modeled outcomes, not a quote for a project, a current installation price, or a guaranteed future result. DOE: Achieving the Promise of Low-Cost Long Duration Energy Storage (August 2024)

Modeled result in DOE’s 2024 assessment Scope and qualification
12%–85% reduction in levelized cost of storage, reaching $0.03–$0.26 per kWh Average ranges across the top 10% cost-reducing innovation portfolios and technologies; modeled innovation outcomes, not current market prices.
Roughly $100 million–$1 billion in innovation investment Average range associated with the modeled technology innovation portfolios.
6–11 years to implement Average implementation-time range associated with those modeled portfolios.

These results can help readers understand the scale and potential of technology innovation, but they cannot answer which project is cheapest today. A meaningful project comparison must use the same cost boundary and assumptions and account for site, duration, power rating, operating life, conversion pathway, and the service being purchased.

Why storage does not eliminate curtailment or guarantee reliability

Storage can reduce curtailment when it has room to charge during a surplus and can later deliver power into a useful part of the grid. It cannot absorb more energy than its available capacity, charge faster than its power rating permits, or return energy without losses. Nor does storage alone address every mismatch: transmission can move electricity between places, flexible generators can adjust their output, and demand response can change when electricity is used.

Scenario results show why it is too strong to say storage “eliminates” renewable curtailment. NREL’s July 2024 report found 7%–14% curtailment of total variable-renewable generation in the high-variable-renewable scenarios it studied for RELAC countries and under its stated assumptions. This is a scenario result, not a universal forecast or an observed rate for every grid. NREL: Accelerated Energy Storage Deployment in RELAC Countries: Program Summary Report (July 2024)

DOE’s summary of the North American Renewable Integration Study makes the system-level point: “The future low-carbon system can balance supply and demand across a wide range of future conditions, with all generation and storage technologies contributing to resource adequacy.” The statement is attributed to the study as summarized by DOE; the summary names no individual speaker. DOE identifies transmission, electricity storage, and flexible operation of generators as sources of operational flexibility. DOE: The North American Renewable Integration Study (June 24, 2021)

How to judge an LDES claim

  • Ask what the duration describes. Check the power rating, energy capacity, discharge conditions, and whether a stated duration belongs to a specific configuration or a broad technology category.
  • Look for the full energy pathway. Electricity may be converted to heat or hydrogen and converted again before delivery; each step matters to the amount returned.
  • Separate a modeled future from a present project. Innovation-cost projections, announced demonstrations, funded awards, and operating commercial assets are different kinds of evidence.
  • Check the location and grid need. Water, geology, landscape, permitting, and transmission access can matter as much as the storage medium.
  • Ask what else is in the plan. Storage supports a more flexible grid, but transmission, flexible generation, and demand response also contribute to balancing.
