Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no published, guaranteed wait time for YouTube to finish processing a 4K 60fps live-stream archive. YouTube’s closest timing example is for a 60-minute 4K video at 30fps uploaded after recording: high-resolution processing can take up to four hours, and YouTube says 4K at 60fps takes longer. That is not a 4K60 livestream estimate. A stream’s archive appearing and its 4K playback becoming available are also separate stages.
What the four-hour example does—and does not—mean
YouTube says processing time depends on a video’s format, length, frame rate, quality and traffic. Its example is a 60-minute 4K video at 30fps, which can take up to four hours to finish high-resolution processing; the same guidance says 4K at 60fps takes longer. The example concerns uploaded video processing, not a promised turnaround for a live archive. YouTube does not quantify how much longer 4K60 takes or publish a specific 4K60 live-archive timetable. YouTube Help: Low video quality after upload.
So, for a 4K60 livestream, plan for several hours or longer, but treat that as a practical allowance, not a YouTube guarantee. Longer streams, higher frame rates and platform traffic can affect processing; there is no reliable exact estimate to calculate from the published guidance.
Archive availability is different from 4K processing
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and that 1440p and 2160p (4K) streams are also automatically archived. This describes archiving eligibility; it does not mean the archive will immediately offer 4K playback. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the stream matters, keep a local recording rather than relying only on the YouTube archive. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

How to tell whether 4K playback is ready
- Open the livestream archive’s watch page.
- Open the player’s Settings menu and choose Quality.
- Check whether 4K or another higher-resolution option is listed. If it is absent, YouTube says high-resolution processing is still underway; check again later.
The archive can be watchable at lower quality while higher-resolution options are still processing. Check the quality menu rather than treating the first playable version as proof that 4K processing is complete. YouTube Help explains how to check quality options.
Protect the recording while you wait
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. For encoder-based streams, its live-stream tips advise checking that local archive files are growing and stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. YouTube live streaming tips.

- Confirm your encoder is saving a local recording and that the file size is increasing during the stream.
- After the event ends on YouTube, stop the encoder as YouTube advises.
- Keep the local file until you have confirmed the YouTube archive is present and has the quality options you need.
A local copy gives you an independent backup; it does not speed up YouTube’s processing.
If the archive is missing or still low quality
The archive is not visible yet
First distinguish a delay from a stream that may not have been captured. YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be saved, so check the stream’s duration and your local recording before assuming the archive will appear.

The video plays, but 4K is missing
Use Settings > Quality on the watch page. If higher-quality options are not listed, YouTube says processing is still underway. Its published timing example is not a deadline for a 4K60 live archive, so wait and check again rather than relying on the four-hour 4K30 upload example as a cutoff.
You need an older point of reference for a long archive
A 2018 TeamYouTube community answer, edited in 2025 according to the page result, says a particularly long livestream archive upload might take up to a day to process. This is older community guidance, not a 4K60-specific guarantee or a maximum wait time for every stream. TeamYouTube community answer.
