The “empty space” was not outer space or a literal void: it was the quantum-vacuum field environment shaped by a terahertz cavity around the material.
What the researchers did
The team placed NbSe2 in a terahertz “dark cavity” built with a split-ring resonator and compared its superconducting behavior with the material outside the cavity. A cavity changes the electromagnetic modes available around a sample; here, the researchers designed that environment to alter the vacuum field. The Chinese Academy of Sciences describes the setup and reported results in its August 2026 account, while Shanghai Jiao Tong University provides a September 2026 account.
The experimental work was led by a University of Science and Technology of China team, with theoretical modeling and interpretation led by Shanghai Jiao Tong University collaborators. The paper, “Evidence for vacuum-enhanced superconductivity in NbSe2,” appeared in Nature on August 19, 2026, as an Accelerated Article Preview, according to the university account.
What “empty space” means in this experiment
In quantum physics, a vacuum is not simply nothing. Even in its ground state, the electromagnetic field has zero-point fluctuations. The researchers’ claim is that a carefully designed cavity can reshape those fluctuations around a material, without an externally driven field, and that this changed environment can affect superconductivity.

That is different from saying that empty space by itself makes superconductors stronger. The relevant experimental ingredient was the engineered cavity, which changed the available electromagnetic modes. As team lead Changgan Zeng put it, “Vacuum fluctuations in free space are generally too weak to produce observable effects in macroscopic condensed-matter systems.” He said the terahertz split-ring resonator was introduced to reshape the environment and amplify the fluctuations.
What changed in the NbSe2 device
The largest critical-temperature change reported was an increase of up to 5.4% in a six-layer NbSe2 device. The institutional reports do not give absolute before-and-after transition temperatures, so this percentage cannot be translated into a temperature increase in kelvins from the available figures.

The researchers also reported higher critical current and critical magnetic field near the superconducting transition. These are distinct measures of how much current or magnetic field a superconducting state can withstand; the reported changes do not mean that all superconducting properties improved by the same amount or under every condition.
Why the cavity frequency matters
The reported enhancement varied with the cavity’s characteristic frequency and showed a resonant peak. The researchers also varied cavity geometry, material thickness, dielectric materials, and metallic strips. The Chinese Academy of Sciences says these controls addressed possible effects such as strain, material degradation, inhomogeneity, and metallic screening. The frequency-selective response and controls support the case that the cavity environment matters, rather than a simple change to the sample explaining the result.

How the team explains the effect—and what remains uncertain
Within a Ginzburg–Landau theoretical framework, the researchers propose that the superconducting state exchanges virtual photons with cavity modes. In their model, this interaction lowers the energy of the superconducting state and makes it more stable. The resonance-like frequency response is consistent with that explanation.
This is a proposed mechanism, not a direct detection of individual virtual photons moving between the cavity and the material. The institutional accounts report a specific experimental result and the team’s interpretation; they do not provide full uncertainty ranges or complete measurement protocols, and they do not establish independent replication.

What this result does—and does not—show
- It shows: In one laboratory system, a designed terahertz cavity environment was associated with improved superconducting measures in NbSe2, including a maximum reported 5.4% critical-temperature increase in a six-layer device.
- It does not show: Room-temperature superconductivity, a consumer-ready technology, or a general method that will strengthen every superconductor. The reports describe wider applications as a possibility requiring further optimization.
The study’s significance is that it treats the electromagnetic vacuum environment as something researchers may be able to engineer and use to influence a material—not merely as a passive backdrop. Whether that approach can produce larger, practical, or broadly reproducible gains remains an open question.
