How Long Does It Take to Repair a Damaged Nuclear Submarine?

A damaged nuclear submarine may need months or years of work—or may not be repaired. Public cases show why planned schedules and actual return-to-service dates differ.

There is no standard repair time for a damaged nuclear submarine. A planned maintenance period can last several months and overrun; extensive damage can keep a boat in a shipyard for years. In some cases, the Navy decides not to repair the submarine at all.

What counts as “repair”?

The timeline depends on what is being counted. A submarine may undergo immediate damage control, an initial assessment, preliminary repairs, transit to a major shipyard, extensive shipyard work, and then the steps needed to return to operational service. Those stages are not interchangeable, and a public schedule for one stage does not establish when the submarine is available for duty.

Damage severity and type matter, as does whether the work is a planned overhaul or an unplanned repair. A submarine may also receive preliminary work in one location before proceeding to a shipyard for more extensive repairs.

What public cases show

Submarine Incident and work Publicly reported duration or outcome
USS San Francisco Struck an undersea mountain in 2005; an unusually severe grounding case. 865 days in the shipyard and 294,000 labor days, according to the Congressional Budget Office in 2021. CBO report
USS Connecticut Struck an object while submerged on October 2, 2021. After preliminary assessment and some repairs in Guam, it moved to Puget Sound for extensive work. A 31-month EDSRA was described as a notional schedule in March 2023; in July 2023 the Navy said the availability had begun and was scheduled to return the submarine to service around early 2026. That was a plan, not a verified completion date. Naval News, March 2023; Naval News, July 2023
USS Miami Suffered a severe fire in May 2012 while in dry dock during an overhaul. The Navy initially planned repairs, then abandoned them as the damage estimate increased. No completed repair duration: the reported estimate rose from $450 million to $700 million, and the Navy canceled the repair in 2013. The submarine was later decommissioned. Why a planned schedule may not be the actual timeline

The Congressional Budget Office describes submarine maintenance as inspections, repairs, and part replacements. Although major planned maintenance periods can take several months, they often take longer than scheduled. CBO identifies labor supply and shipyard infrastructure capacity as primary causes of delay. Fleet-wide figures provide context but do not predict an individual damaged submarine’s repair time. The Government Accountability Office reported in 2026 that attack submarines lost more than 15,000 operational days to maintenance delays and active idle time over fiscal years 2016–2025. It estimated $3.4 billion was spent sustaining submarines and crews that provided no operational capability during that period. These figures cover fleet-wide maintenance effects, not the repair duration of a particular damaged boat. GAO report

What the USS Connecticut timeline does—and does not—tell us

U.S. Pacific Command said after the 2021 collision that the submarine’s nuclear propulsion plant and spaces were unaffected, while damage elsewhere remained under assessment. U.S. Pacific Command statement Naval News later reported damage to the bow and lower rudder, along with preliminary assessment and repairs in Guam before the submarine traveled to Puget Sound. In March 2023, a NAVSEA spokesperson told Naval News that the repair schedule would be part of an FY23 Extended Docking Selected Restricted Availability, or EDSRA, notionally sized for 31 months. In July 2023, NAVSEA said the EDSRA had begun on July 12 and was scheduled to return the submarine to service around early 2026; the Navy estimated additional repairs at approximately $80 million. Those statements establish the Navy’s plans and estimate at the time, not the submarine’s actual return-to-service date. No current verified return date is established here.

Can a badly damaged submarine be repaired?

Sometimes, but repair is a decision as well as a technical undertaking. The Navy weighs the damage and repair scope alongside cost, the submarine’s age, and available fiscal and shipyard resources. USS Miami shows that a planned repair can be canceled when the damage assessment changes and the estimated cost rises. The Navy abandoned that repair rather than complete it, so the case has no repair duration to compare with completed jobs. How to read a reported repair estimate

  • Check the stage: An initial assessment or repair at an interim location is not necessarily the major shipyard work.
  • Check the endpoint: “Work completed” and “returned to service” describe different milestones.
  • Check whether it is a target or an outcome: A scheduled duration or projected return date is not proof of actual completion.
  • Check what the number measures: Shipyard days, labor days, an availability’s planned duration, and the cost of additional repairs are distinct figures.
