For most adults, caffeine’s half-life is commonly estimated at about 4 to 6 hours. That means your body metabolizes roughly half the amount in that time—not all of it. Several half-lives may pass before the amount falls substantially, and pregnancy, age, health conditions, smoking, and some medicines can affect how quickly caffeine is cleared.
What “stays in your system” means
There is no single number of hours that tells you when all caffeine is gone. The useful general estimate is a half-life: the time it takes the body to metabolize about half of the caffeine amount. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in Science and Our Food Supply: Examining Dietary Supplements, says it typically takes 4 to 6 hours to metabolize half of what you consumed.

That estimate describes metabolism, not a guarantee about when caffeine will stop being noticeable or become undetectable. Those are different questions. The amount remaining in the body declines over time; it does not drop to zero at the end of one half-life. The sources cited here establish a general half-life estimate and factors that can affect clearance, but they do not establish one universal duration for caffeine’s subjective effects or a precise time when it is undetectable in a particular person.

In ordinary conversation, “caffeine wears off” might mean that a person no longer notices its effects. In pharmacology, “half-life” refers to a change in the amount of a substance. Neither phrase should be treated as an exact countdown for every person. So if you mean “How long does caffeine last?” the answer depends on whether you are asking about noticeable effects or how long caffeine remains in the body. The FDA estimate answers the second question only in terms of metabolism of half the amount.

How much can remain after several half-lives?
A simple way to understand half-life is to imagine the amount present being halved again and again. If the 4-to-6-hour adult estimate applied to a particular dose and person, the arithmetic would look like this:
| Elapsed time | Approximate share remaining | How to read the example |
|---|---|---|
| One half-life: 4–6 hours | One-half | About half has been metabolized; the rest has not necessarily disappeared. |
| Two half-lives: 8–12 hours | One-quarter | Half of the amount remaining after the first interval is halved again. |
| Three half-lives: 12–18 hours | One-eighth | The arithmetic leaves about 12.5% of the starting amount. |
| Four half-lives: 16–24 hours | One-sixteenth | The arithmetic leaves about 6.25% of the starting amount. |
These are mathematical illustrations of repeated halving, not measurements or individualized predictions. They assume a half-life in the stated range and a simplified pattern of decline. A person’s actual clearance can differ, so the table cannot tell you how much caffeine is in your body at a given hour or when a test would no longer detect it.
For scale, applying the same arithmetic to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) example of 113–247 mg in a 12-ounce brewed coffee would leave a theoretical 56.5–123.5 mg after one half-life, or about 28–61.75 mg after two. Those numbers are illustrations, not a measurement of what would remain in any individual; the coffee amount itself varies, and the person’s actual half-life may differ from the general estimate. The example shows why “half metabolized” is not the same as “gone.”
The calculation also helps explain why a later serving matters: it adds caffeine while some from an earlier serving may still remain. The total present is not necessarily the amount in the most recent drink alone. Because products contain different amounts and individual clearance varies, a clock-based estimate built from one serving cannot precisely account for several servings. If you have had more than one coffee, tea, supplement, or other caffeine-containing product, each contributes to the starting amount; the exact total may be hard to determine if a label does not give a caffeine quantity.
Why caffeine clearance varies
Caffeine is metabolized mainly in the liver, particularly through the enzyme CYP1A2, and its metabolites are subsequently processed and excreted. The NCBI Bookshelf clinical reference Caffeine – StatPearls identifies several factors that may affect caffeine half-life. Their presence does not provide enough information to calculate an individual person’s clearance time.

- Pregnancy: Pregnancy can substantially increase caffeine half-life, according to the NIH ODS. A longer half-life means caffeine may take longer to decline.
- Newborn age: Newborns have immature caffeine metabolism. LactMed notes that preterm and younger newborn infants metabolize caffeine very slowly.
- Smoking: Smoking is among the factors identified in the clinical reference as relevant to half-life. The cited material does not provide a direction or an individual adjustment that can be applied to calculate a person’s timing.
- Liver disease: The liver’s role in metabolism makes liver disease relevant to clearance; the clinical reference identifies it as a factor that may affect half-life.
- Some medicines: Medicines that inhibit CYP1A2 may affect caffeine half-life. The information here does not establish a dose-specific effect for any particular medicine.
These factors are reasons not to treat 4 to 6 hours as a personal guarantee. If you are concerned about caffeine alongside a health condition or a medicine, ask a healthcare professional or pharmacist about your situation. Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine on the basis of a general half-life estimate.
What the pregnancy study found—and what it cannot predict
A study by Knutti, Rothweiler, and Schlatter, published in the European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology in 1981, reported a mean caffeine half-life of 3.4 hours, with a range of 2 to 5 hours, in its nonpregnant adult group. In its pregnant group, the mean was 8.3 hours, with a range of 3 to 16 hours.

The spread within each group is itself a reminder that a group average cannot specify one person’s rate. The study illustrates that pregnancy can be associated with substantially longer clearance, consistent with the NIH ODS statement, but its figures should not be used as a personal calculation. In particular, the pregnant group’s 8.3-hour mean does not mean that every pregnant person has that half-life; the reported range was wide.
Caffeine in breast milk and infant clearance
Caffeine reaches breast milk rapidly, according to the National Library of Medicine’s LactMed entry on caffeine, last revised April 15, 2026. LactMed also says that preterm and younger newborn infants metabolize caffeine very slowly. These points matter because an adult half-life estimate does not describe how quickly an infant clears caffeine, and caffeine in a breastfeeding parent’s body can reach milk.
This information does not provide an individual feeding schedule or a precise milk concentration over time. For questions about caffeine while breastfeeding—especially when an infant is preterm or very young—discuss the circumstances with a healthcare professional. Do not infer an infant’s exposure or clearance from the adult 4-to-6-hour estimate. The important distinction is that caffeine moving into milk and an infant clearing caffeine are separate processes; neither is described by the adult half-life figure alone.

How much caffeine was in the drink?
Elapsed time is only one part of the picture; the starting amount also matters. The NIH ODS pregnancy fact sheet gives examples of caffeine content: 113–247 milligrams in a 12-ounce brewed coffee, about 37 milligrams in green tea, and about 71 milligrams in black tea. These are examples, not guaranteed values for every serving. Coffee and tea amounts can vary, and a product’s actual contents may differ from a fact-sheet example.

| 12-ounce brewed coffee | 113–247 mg | Fact-sheet example range; not a specification for every coffee. |
| Green tea | About 37 mg | Fact-sheet example; actual products and servings can vary. |
| Black tea | About 71 mg | Fact-sheet example; actual products and servings can vary. |
The examples help show why counting “cups” is not a precise dose calculation: a brewed coffee serving in the fact sheet has a broad range, while the tea amounts are also examples rather than exact values for all products. Serving size and the product itself matter, so check the product information when available instead of assuming every drink of the same name contains the same amount.
Some supplements containing botanical sources of caffeine may not state the caffeine amount on the label, according to NIH ODS. If the amount is not stated, you cannot use the label to make a precise calculation of how much caffeine you consumed. A half-life estimate cannot make up for an unknown starting amount.
Can you calculate exactly when caffeine will be gone?
No—not from a general half-life figure alone. An exact personal estimate would require knowing the amount consumed, the timing of each serving, the person’s actual clearance rate, and what “gone” means in the context of the question. The general adult estimate supplies none of those individualized details. The pregnancy study’s broad ranges also show why a group estimate should not be mistaken for a personal one.
If your practical question is whether caffeine may still be present later, the cautious interpretation is that one half-life does not mean complete clearance, and a later serving can be added to caffeine that remains from an earlier one. If the question is whether you will still feel an effect at a particular time, the sources here do not establish a reliable universal duration. People should not use the clearance estimate as a guarantee about sleep, alertness, symptoms, or a test result.

Likewise, “undetectable” is not an interchangeable term for “mostly metabolized.” The half-life figures describe the amount declining over time; they do not set a detection threshold or specify how long a particular test can identify caffeine. The answer to a test-related question therefore cannot be derived from the 4-to-6-hour estimate or from the repeated-halving table.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does not speed caffeine clearance?
The sources in this article do not establish a drink, supplement, or home remedy that reliably speeds caffeine metabolism or removes caffeine from the body. Trying to counteract caffeine with another product is not a substitute for allowing time to pass, and adding a caffeine-containing product would increase the amount consumed. No test strip for a drink or sample can tell you an individual’s clearance time based on the information available here.
If caffeine is causing a concerning or severe reaction, seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on a half-life calculation or attempting a home remedy. The half-life estimate explains decline over time; it is not a treatment plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does caffeine last before it wears off?
There is no universal duration for noticeable effects established by the figures here. The commonly cited 4-to-6-hour estimate is a half-life—the time to metabolize about half the amount—not a clock for when you will stop feeling effects.
Does caffeine leave your system after 4 to 6 hours?
No. The FDA describes 4 to 6 hours as the time it typically takes to metabolize half of what you consumed. Some caffeine may remain after that, and additional half-lives are needed for the amount to decline further.
Best Value
Can I work out exactly how much caffeine is left?
Not precisely from a general estimate. You would need the amount and timing of each serving and your individual clearance rate. Drink amounts vary, and some supplements with botanical caffeine may not state the caffeine quantity on the label.
Does pregnancy change how long caffeine stays in the body?
Pregnancy can substantially increase caffeine half-life. A 1981 study reported mean half-lives of 3.4 hours in its nonpregnant group and 8.3 hours in its pregnant group, but its ranges were broad and are not individual predictions.
Does caffeine pass into breast milk?
Yes. LactMed says caffeine appears in breast milk rapidly. It also notes that preterm and younger newborn infants metabolize caffeine very slowly; an adult half-life estimate cannot predict an infant’s clearance or an individual feeding schedule.
Can coffee, water, or a supplement make caffeine clear faster?
The cited sources do not establish a drink, supplement, or home remedy that reliably speeds caffeine metabolism or removes it from the body. A caffeine-containing product would add to the amount consumed.
The Bottom Line
For most adults, the useful estimate is a 4-to-6-hour half-life: about half the caffeine is metabolized in that time, not all of it. Several half-lives may pass before the amount falls substantially. The actual timeline varies, especially with pregnancy, newborn age, liver disease, smoking, and some medicines, so the estimate cannot predict exactly when caffeine will stop being noticeable or undetectable for you.
