Its published history says iOS feature updates have reached devices as far back as six years after their original release, but that is a record—not a guarantee for any particular model. Major iOS compatibility, security updates and hardware repairs follow separate timelines.
What “iPhone support” means
Support can refer to three different things: whether an iPhone can install the latest major iOS version, whether Apple still issues security updates for the iOS version it runs, and whether Apple or an authorized provider can service its hardware. A model can fall outside the newest iOS compatibility list yet still receive a security update, and hardware service has its own rules.

How long does an iPhone get iOS updates?
Apple’s June 2024 environmental longevity paper says its track record includes iOS feature updates “as far back as 6 years from the device’s original release.” That describes the farthest-back point Apple cited in its history; it is not a standard support period, an average, or a promise that every iPhone will receive six years of updates. Apple’s 2024 paper also noted that the iPhone 6s, introduced in 2015, received an iOS 15 update in March 2024. That example illustrates ongoing support for an older device, not a forecast for newer models.
Check major iOS compatibility
As of Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guide, the newest major release supports iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. Compatibility lists can change with future releases, so check Apple’s current iOS 26 list for the exact model. To identify yours, open Settings → General → About.

Can an older iPhone still get security updates?
Sometimes. Apple may release security fixes for an older iOS branch after a device is no longer compatible with the newest major iOS. For example, Apple’s security release history lists iOS 18.7.10 for iPhone XS, XS Max and XR on 17 August 2026; those models are not on the iOS 26 compatibility list. Apple’s April 2026 guidance also describes security updates for some devices running iOS 15 and iOS 16. These are examples of releases that occurred, not assurance that a model will receive future updates.
Check Apple’s security releases history for updates relevant to a model and software version. On the phone, use Settings → General → Software Update to check for available software. Apple advises keeping devices up to date because updates address security issues; availability depends on the device and iOS branch. How long will Apple repair an iPhone?
Hardware service is separate from software support. Apple says service and parts are generally available for at least five years after it last distributed a product, and may be available for up to seven years depending on parts availability or longer where required by law. The period starts from the model’s last distribution—not the date a particular owner bought it. Apple also describes a France-specific rule: qualifying purchases may receive service and parts for seven years from the model’s last distribution there.
Vintage and obsolete status
- Vintage: Distribution ended more than five and less than seven years ago. Service and parts may still be available, subject to availability and local terms.
- Obsolete: Distribution ended more than seven years ago. Apple discontinues hardware service, and service providers cannot order parts.
Check the model’s status and applicable regional terms on Apple’s vintage and obsolete products page. These classifications concern hardware service; they do not determine whether the iPhone can install a particular iOS release.

How to check support for your exact iPhone
- Find the model: On the iPhone, open Settings → General → About.
- Check major iOS availability: Compare the model with Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guide, then check Settings → General → Software Update for software available to that device.
- Check security history: Search Apple’s security releases for updates to the iOS branch and model. Past releases do not guarantee another one.
- Check repair status: Look up the model in Apple’s vintage and obsolete list and review the service terms for your region.
