Plan for several hours, and allow up to about 24 hours for a new refrigerator to stabilize—but follow the instructions for your exact model. Manufacturer timelines differ: Whirlpool says typical refrigerators take 8–12 hours to reach operating temperatures and up to 24 hours to stabilize, while Samsung Canada advises waiting approximately two hours before storing food in its refrigerators. Those are brand-specific recommendations, not results of a controlled comparison. Check the actual compartment temperatures before adding a full grocery load.

How long should you wait before putting food in?

Use your refrigerator’s owner’s manual as the deciding guide. The estimates below describe different manufacturers’ advice and may refer to different milestones, such as reaching operating temperature or fully stabilizing.

Manufacturer Published guidance Important qualification
Whirlpool About 8–12 hours to reach operating temperatures; up to 24 hours to fully stabilize. Whirlpool recommends waiting until the refrigerator is at or below 37°F and the freezer at or below 0°F before adding a full load. A recently installed unit may need 24 hours for full functionality, including chilled water and ice. Whirlpool guidance
Frigidaire About 24 hours for stabilization after installation. Its guidance says to leave the recommended setting alone during the first 24 hours. Setpoints vary by configuration. Frigidaire guidance
GE Appliances About 24 hours on average to reach a stable temperature after initial startup or a temperature-setting change. Frequent door openings or a compartment less than three-quarters full may extend stabilization. GE stabilization guidance
Samsung Canada Approximately two hours before storing food in a new Samsung refrigerator. This is Samsung Canada’s stated guidance, on a page last updated June 9, 2026—not a universal estimate. Follow your model’s manual if it differs. Samsung Canada guidance
LG Up to 24 hours after installation for the set temperature, according to LG Canada’s product FAQ. A cited LG manual also recommends waiting 24 hours before adding food; check the instructions for your model. LG Canada FAQ

These figures are operating guidance from each manufacturer, not comparable laboratory measurements. In particular, Samsung Canada’s approximate two-hour food-storage advice should not be treated as equivalent to another manufacturer’s full-stabilization interval.

How to tell whether it is cold enough

Elapsed time and a cold-feeling interior are not reliable substitutes for a temperature reading. FoodSafety.gov recommends setting the refrigerator to 40°F (4°C) or below and the freezer to 0°F (-18°C) or below, and checking with an appliance thermometer. These are food-safety limits; a manufacturer may recommend a colder refrigerator target. For example, Whirlpool’s suggested setpoints are 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer.

Place an appliance thermometer in each compartment and check the readings against the manual and the food-safety limits. For most Frigidaire configurations covered by its electronic-control guidance, the recommended targets are 37°F for fresh food and 0°F for the freezer; its Custom-Flex temperature-drawer configuration calls for 39°F in the fresh-food compartment. Do not assume a dial number or another brand’s target corresponds to your model.

FoodSafety.gov also advises refrigerating perishables within two hours. That rule is about how long perishable food may remain unrefrigerated; it does not mean every new refrigerator will cool in two hours. FoodSafety.gov cold-food guidance

What to do while the refrigerator cools

  1. Set it up as directed. Follow the installation and owner’s manual, including its instructions for startup and recommended control settings.
  2. Leave the recommended setting in place. Frigidaire advises against changing its recommended setting during the first 24 hours. Whirlpool says to wait 24 hours after a temperature-setting change before checking again. These are brand-specific instructions.
  3. Limit door openings. Keep both doors shut as much as practical; frequent openings can lengthen stabilization.
  4. Allow airflow. Avoid overloading the compartments or blocking vents. GE notes that a compartment less than three-quarters full can take longer to stabilize, but that observation is not a universal instruction to fill every model.
  5. Check temperature before loading a large shop. Use an appliance thermometer and compare its readings with your model’s guidance and food-safety limits.

Cooling time can vary with room temperature, how warm the appliance is at startup, model size and layout, door openings, and how much is inside. That is why the manual’s timeline is a guide rather than a guarantee for every installation.

When should you contact the manufacturer?

If the refrigerator shows no sign of cooling or remains too warm after the time specified for your model, check the setup and settings against the manual, then contact that manufacturer’s support service. GE says some freezer cooling should be apparent within approximately one hour and advises service if there is no sign of cooling within 24 hours; it also advises considering service if the appliance remains warm after 24 hours with correct settings. Those thresholds are GE guidance, not a universal diagnostic rule. GE cooling and service guidance

Does ice or water take longer?

It can. Whirlpool says ice production begins once its unit is completely cool; cubes may then begin about every three hours, and the initial bin may take up to three days to fill. Those are Whirlpool-specific expectations. Check your own model’s manual for ice-maker and water-dispenser startup timing.
