Samsung Galaxy phones do not all receive updates for the same length of time. Samsung says Galaxy mobile devices can receive security updates for up to seven years, but eligibility and timing vary by model and market. For the Galaxy S25 and S26 series, Samsung specifies seven generations of operating-system upgrades and seven years of security updates, counted from global launch—not from when you buy the phone.
What Samsung’s update promises mean
“Software updates” can mean two different things: major Android and One UI upgrades, or security updates that address vulnerabilities. Samsung states these as separate commitments, so a promise of seven years of security updates does not by itself mean seven major Android upgrades.

- OS upgrades: Samsung counts these in generations of operating-system upgrades.
- Security updates: Samsung describes support in years. Its 2025 Sustainability Report says Galaxy mobile devices receive security-update support for up to seven years, while noting that availability and timing vary by product and market. Samsung Electronics 2025 Sustainability Report
Examples of support periods Samsung has announced
| Devices or policy | OS upgrade commitment | Security update commitment | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S26 series | Seven generations | Seven years | From global launch; Samsung’s announcement describes this commitment for the series. Samsung Newsroom US: Galaxy S26 series |
| Galaxy S25+ | Seven generations | Seven years | From global launch, according to Samsung’s product environmental report. Galaxy S25+ Product Environmental Report |
| Select Galaxy devices named in Samsung’s 2022 announcement | Up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades | Up to five years | Samsung named eligible Galaxy S22 and S21 devices, Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, and Galaxy Tab S8 models. This was the policy announced for those listed products at that time, not a promise for all Galaxy phones. Samsung’s February 10, 2022 announcement |
| Galaxy mobile devices generally | Not stated as a universal number | Up to seven years | Samsung says support availability and timing may vary by product and market. Samsung Electronics 2025 Sustainability Report |
When does the seven-year clock start?
For the Galaxy S25+ and S26 series commitments cited above, Samsung says the period runs from the device’s global launch date. Buying one later does not restart that clock. Check the specific model’s published terms before calculating an expected end date.

How to check support for your Galaxy phone
- Identify the exact Galaxy model or model number, rather than relying only on a broad family name such as “Galaxy A” or “Galaxy S.”
- Check Samsung’s current security update information and model support information for that device.
- Use the information for your country and carrier. Samsung notes that update availability and timing can vary by product and market. Samsung Electronics 2025 Sustainability Report
- Read OS-upgrade generations separately from security-update years. Do not infer a monthly or quarterly patch schedule from the total support period; Samsung’s general statement does not establish one universal cadence.
Does Samsung still update older Galaxy phones?
Some older devices were included in Samsung’s earlier support commitments, but eligibility depended on the models listed. For example, Samsung’s 2022 announcement covered select S21 and S22 devices and named foldables and tablets; it does not establish the current status of every older Galaxy phone. For a particular device, check Samsung’s current model-specific information rather than applying a newer phone’s promise retroactively.

What to compare when choosing a Galaxy phone
- Exact model: A commitment for one series or model does not automatically apply to another Galaxy range.
- Major upgrades: Compare the promised number of OS-upgrade generations.
- Security support: Compare the stated duration separately.
- Start date: Where specified, establish whether the period begins at global launch.
- Market and timing: Confirm availability for your country and carrier; a support duration does not guarantee identical delivery timing everywhere.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
