How Long Do Dropped Items Last in Minecraft?

Ordinary dropped items despawn after five minutes of active chunk ticking, not necessarily five minutes in real time. Mobs and certain items follow different rules.

Ordinary dropped items in Minecraft despawn after 6,000 game ticks—five minutes of active ticking. The countdown advances only while the item is in a chunk that is loaded and processing entities, so five minutes on the clock is not always five minutes in real time. Mobs follow different rules.

How long dropped items last

The standard lifetime for an ordinary dropped item entity is 6,000 game ticks, equivalent to five minutes while its chunk is loaded and ticking. This figure is documented by the Minecraft Wiki’s item reference; it is not a guarantee that every item will remain safe for five real-world minutes.

If the chunk unloads or stops processing entities, the countdown pauses. When the chunk becomes active again, the remaining timer can continue. That is why an item may still be there after you have been away longer than five minutes—or may disappear soon after you return if much of its ticking time already elapsed.

What to do if you dropped your inventory

  1. Return to the location promptly. Reaching the area can cause its chunk to load and resume ticking, so avoid unnecessary delays.
  2. Look for hazards as well as the timer. Lava, fire, cactus, explosions, and other environmental damage can destroy items before natural despawning does.
  3. In Bedrock, distinguish simulation distance from render distance. Microsoft explains that simulation distance determines how far from the player the game processes mechanics and entity behavior; render distance controls what is drawn and may be larger. A visible area is not necessarily being simulated. See Microsoft’s simulation-distance documentation.

The same Microsoft page describes a four-chunk default and configuration up to 12 chunks for its Bedrock context. Those values are not universal guarantees for every device, server, or world configuration.

Does “stuff” include mobs?

No: the five-minute figure is for ordinary dropped items, not mobs. Mob despawning depends on factors such as distance, whether the area is being simulated, persistence, mob type, and edition. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes describe distance-related despawning for most naturally spawning mobs and identify persistence cases and exceptions. They do not establish one five-minute mob timer for all creatures or versions.

Exceptions and other ways items disappear

Nether Stars

A Nether Star dropped by a dying Wither in Java Edition is reported to have a ten-minute timer; a Nether Star dropped by another method follows the ordinary five-minute timer. In Bedrock Edition, Nether Stars do not naturally despawn. These are Nether Star-specific exceptions, not longer protection for other loot. See the Minecraft Wiki’s Nether Star reference.

Environmental destruction and custom worlds

Items can be destroyed by hazards before their natural timer expires. Server configuration, add-ons, and game updates can also affect behavior, so check your edition, version, server settings, and add-ons if what you see differs from the standard rule.

For custom Bedrock content, creators can use the minecraft:should_despawn component to control whether an item eventually despawns. Microsoft’s item component documentation applies to format version 1.20.30 and later; it describes a creator option, not a normal-player setting for changing the vanilla item timer.
