How Long Do CDs Last? What “CD Rot” Means for Your Collection

CDs can deteriorate, but their lifespan varies by format, materials, storage and handling. Learn what causes errors and how to protect access to your collection.

CDs can deteriorate, but there is no reliable countdown that applies to every disc—or evidence that every home collection is already failing. Pressed CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs use different data layers, and a disc’s continued readability depends on its construction, storage, handling and playback equipment.

How long do CDs last?

There is no defensible single lifespan for an individual CD. The Library of Congress notes that commercial-disc materials can vary by manufacturer and date, and its longevity guidance cautions that old test samples and estimates may not reflect currently manufactured media. Laboratory aging tests describe particular media under particular conditions; they are not a way to calculate how many years remain for a disc on your shelf. The Library of Congress’s CD-ROM longevity guidance and its recordable-disc guidance explain the limits of the evidence.

One frequently repeated figure needs especially narrow interpretation: the Library of Congress FAQ cites an estimate of more than 100 years for gold-colored optical discs in sound storage conditions. That is not a guarantee, does not cover every gold-colored disc, and should not be applied to a collection of pressed music CDs. The FAQ also says the Library does not recommend commercial products or suppliers. Library of Congress optical-media FAQ

Why pressed CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs age differently

The formats do not store data in the same way, so results for one should not be treated as a lifespan promise for another.

Format How data is recorded What the evidence supports
Pressed CD audio or CD-ROM Data is molded into the polycarbonate substrate, with a reflective metal layer and protective top coating. The Library of Congress identifies oxidation, hydrolysis and mechanical stress as possible causes of signal errors. Materials and construction can vary.
CD-R A laser changes a photosensitive organic dye layer; the reflective layer also affects performance. The Library of Congress says recordable media tend to degrade faster than ROM media. Tests found differences among manufacturers, not a universal result for all discs.
CD-RW A phase-changing metal-alloy film between dielectric layers stores data and can be rewritten. Its construction differs from both pressed discs and CD-R. Longevity findings for one format should not be generalized to it.

The Library of Congress describes these constructions in its pages on pressed CD-ROM and audio media and recordable media. Its material-composition information is not a brand-by-brand forecast.

What is CD rot?

“CD rot” is a loose popular name for deterioration, not one specific failure process. The Library of Congress describes oxidation, hydrolysis and mechanical stress as possible causes of errors in pressed CD-ROM and audio discs. As it puts it, “Aging, storage environment, and handling can cause changes in the materials leading to deterioration and loss of data, sometimes referred to as ‘CD-Rot’ or ‘Laser-Rot’.”

Errors can accumulate before a disc becomes unplayable. For CD-ROM, the Library of Congress cites the ISO 10149 maximum block error rate of 220 errors per second; above that level, uncorrectable errors may appear and information may be lost. This is a technical measurement—not a visual test, a household remaining-life calculator or a threshold that tells you how long a disc has left.

Why CD-R and CD-RW test results need context

Recordable discs can be more vulnerable than pressed ROM media because their data depends on a dye or phase-changing layer as well as a reflective layer. In 2004, NIST reported accelerated-aging work using higher temperature and humidity, along with direct-light exposure, and found differences in stability among the manufacturers tested. Its report, published in 2005, describes specific samples and test procedures; it does not establish the lifespan of every retail music CD or every blank disc sold today. See the NIST care and handling guide and the NIST report on recordable-disc stability.

How to store CDs so they last

Good storage reduces avoidable exposure, but it cannot reverse chemical damage or guarantee future playback. NIST explains that oxygen and pollutants can migrate through disc layers with moisture, and that high humidity combined with higher temperatures accelerates oxidation. Its advice supports cool, dry storage for ROM discs; it should not be mistaken for a precise climate prescription for every home or archive.

  • Keep discs in jewel cases or another enclosure that protects them from dust and handling damage. The Library of Congress considers jewel cases acceptable.
  • If replacing a case, choose one that secures the disc at its center hub so the disc is held without unnecessary contact with its data surface.
  • Use canned air to remove dust from optical discs, as advised by the Library of Congress; avoid rubbing contaminants across the surface.
  • Handle discs carefully and return them to their cases rather than leaving them exposed.

These measures help limit physical and environmental stress; they do not stop all aging. See the Library of Congress guidance on optical-disc care.

Why does my CD skip?

Skipping or read errors mean access is unreliable, but they do not by themselves establish that the disc has “rot” or reveal the cause. A disc may have accumulated errors that a player can no longer correct, yet casual visual inspection is not a reliable diagnostic. Conversely, visible marks do not provide a dependable estimate of remaining life.

If the content matters, test the disc on two different machines, as the Library of Congress recommends. If either machine can read it, make a digital copy promptly and verify that the copied files play or open correctly. A faulty disc may sometimes be recoverable by ripping it to a computer, but success is not assured.

How to protect access to important CDs

  1. Test readability: Try the disc on two different machines rather than relying on one player or drive.
  2. Make a backup: Copy important digital content and check the resulting files. A second copy protects access if the original later fails.
  3. Seek format-specific help if needed: If the disc is faulty and the content is important, consider a preservation-transfer provider that specializes in the original format. The Library of Congress recommends matching the provider to that format.

Backups address a separate risk from physical preservation: even an intact disc may become harder to use as compatible playback equipment and software age. A backup cannot repair a damaged disc, and careful storage cannot replace having another accessible copy. For recovery and transfer guidance, consult the Library of Congress optical-media FAQ.
