Google promises Pixel 8 and later seven years of Android OS and security updates, counted from each phone’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. Samsung promises the Galaxy S25 series seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, counted from global launch. Those are support windows—not a guarantee that every update arrives on the same day or that patches come monthly for the entire period.
What the update promises cover
“Software updates” can mean several different things: a new Android version, the manufacturer’s interface upgrades, security patches, bug fixes, or optional feature additions. Check which of these a manufacturer actually promises rather than treating the terms as interchangeable.
- Pixel 8 and later: Google lists seven years of Android OS and security updates. It also notes that Pixel Drops may add or upgrade features. The seven-year period runs from first availability on the Google Store in the US. Google’s Pixel update policy currently includes Pixel 10 models in this group.
- Galaxy S25 series: Samsung specifies seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. The company says timing may vary by model, network provider, and market. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 announcement states the commitment.
Google’s 2023 announcement described the Pixel 8 promise as seven years of software support, including the latest Android operating system, security updates, and ongoing Feature Drops. Its current support page gives the policy by model and defines the start point for the support period. Google’s 2023 Pixel 8 announcement
How long support lasts on older examples
Flagship support terms change between generations. A newer promise should not be applied retroactively to every phone from the same brand.

Other manufacturers’ policies do not establish one universal Android-flagship term. Xiaomi Global Support says its Xiaomi, REDMI, and POCO smartphones typically receive security updates for at least two years after first shipment, with three years or longer for some models depending on actual conditions. That general policy does not specify one flagship-wide OS-upgrade duration. Xiaomi Global Support policy
The Android Open Source Project recommends ongoing security support, including regular updates addressing known vulnerabilities, for at least two years from launch. This is platform guidance for device makers, not a guarantee that every flagship receives exactly two years of support. Android security guidance

Why a seven-year window does not mean seven years of monthly patches
Duration and delivery cadence are separate. Samsung says selected devices receive firmware security updates monthly, quarterly, or biannually; consult its current scope list for the exact device. Samsung’s security update scope
Rollouts can also be staggered. Google says Pixel updates arrive gradually, may depend on the carrier and device, and can take a few weeks to reach a phone. Samsung says timing for the S25 series may vary by model, network provider, and market. A published support window therefore does not promise simultaneous delivery across regions or configurations.

How to check how long your phone will remain supported
- Identify the exact device. Record its full model name and generation, country or market, and carrier. A series name alone may not tell you which policy applies.
- Find the manufacturer’s commitment for that model. Use the official support page or announcement, and check whether it promises OS upgrades, security updates, or both. Google directs owners of non-Pixel Android phones to their manufacturer or carrier for support information. Google’s update guidance
- Check the clock’s start date. Use the manufacturer’s stated reference event, not the date you bought the phone. Google’s Pixel policy uses first US Google Store availability; Samsung’s S25 commitment uses global launch.
- Check the handset’s update status. On a Pixel, open Settings > About phone > Android version to see the Android version and security update level. Google’s instructions
- Confirm active patch scope and cadence. Check whether the precise model still appears on the manufacturer’s active security list and whether its updates are monthly, quarterly, or less frequent. Samsung publishes a selected-device scope list.
What to check before buying a used flagship
Work out how much of the support period remains, rather than relying on the original advertised number of years. For example, a phone bought well after its first availability or launch has already used part of the stated window. Then confirm that the exact regional and carrier model is covered and is still receiving security updates. This is especially important for older flagships, whose support may be shorter or already ended.
