In an idealized outage calculation, 5 MWh of usable energy supplies a constant 50 MW load for 6 minutes: 5 MWh ÷ 50 MW = 0.1 hour. That answer assumes the battery can deliver 50 MW and that all 5 MWh is available at the point serving the load. The energy rating alone does not establish either condition.
How the six-minute calculation works
MWh measures an amount of energy; MW measures the rate at which energy is delivered. Divide energy by power to find duration:

Duration = usable energy ÷ load
- Divide 5 MWh by 50 MW: 5 ÷ 50 = 0.1 hour.
- Convert 0.1 hour to minutes: 0.1 × 60 = 6 minutes.
This is an energy-balance calculation, not a measured battery test or a guarantee of outage performance. NREL explains the same relationship with a different example: “a battery with 1 MW of power capacity and 4 MWh of usable energy capacity has a duration of 4 hours.” See NREL’s Timescales of Energy Storage.

Energy and power are separate specifications. A battery may store 5 MWh yet lack the discharge capability or power-conversion equipment needed to supply 50 MW. NREL distinguishes rated power—the maximum instantaneous discharge capability—from the quantity of energy stored in its Grid-Scale Battery Storage FAQ. The hypothetical gives no power rating, so whether this system can actually serve the stated load is unknown.

What “5 MWh” needs to mean
The six-minute result applies if 5 MWh means usable energy delivered at the load. A nominal, installed, or DC-side figure may not equal usable AC energy: operating limits and conversion equipment can reduce what reaches the load. NREL’s duration analysis uses economically usable discharge capacity at AC power ratings and notes that usable capacity can be below rated capacity. Without the system’s specifications, the delivered amount cannot be established.
Why round-trip efficiency is not automatically a runtime deduction
Round-trip efficiency compares useful energy output with energy put in during a charge-and-discharge cycle. NREL’s 2025 utility-scale battery model uses an 85% representative round-trip efficiency assumption; it is not a universal one-way outage discharge factor. See the 2025 Annual Technology Baseline.

- One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
- Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
- Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
- Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
- Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.
If 5 MWh already represents usable energy available to the load, multiplying it by 85% again would count losses a second time. If 5 MWh instead refers to an upstream input or DC nameplate quantity, the available AC energy depends on system-specific conversion and usable-energy specifications.

How load and operating conditions change the answer
With the same usable energy, a lower constant load runs longer and a higher one runs shorter. If demand varies, runtime depends on the energy consumed across the load profile—not simply on the peak being sustained continuously. Reserves, discharge limits, battery condition, and outage-mode controls also affect what can be delivered. None of those project details is specified in this example, so it cannot predict a particular site’s runtime.

EIA likewise defines battery duration as energy capacity divided by power capacity and notes that grid-service batteries may operate for short periods, while load-shifting applications can call for longer durations. The calculation is coherent, but it does not identify a use case or establish a real system configuration. See EIA’s explanation of utility-scale battery duration.

NREL’s System Advisor Model documentation says that, in a modeled grid outage, “the battery switches to a special dispatch mode that prioritizes meeting the load.” That describes model behavior; it does not establish that an unspecified real installation can island or supply its full load.
