It does not, by itself, raise revenue, lift productivity or make a network secure. Those outcomes depend on what the provider is contracted to do and how well the arrangement is run. The most detailed 2025/2026 cybersecurity and business-data statistics below are from the United Kingdom, and the technology-adoption figures are from the United States. Each number is labelled with its country, so none should be read as a global figure.
What “computer support” usually covers
The phrase covers several different arrangements, and a business should not assume that one provider offers all of them. The main types are:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Help-desk and user support: answering staff questions, resetting accounts, and fixing everyday software problems.
- Onsite or break-fix technical work: visiting the premises to repair or replace equipment when something fails.
- Managed IT services: ongoing responsibility for devices, networks, cloud accounts, updates and backups, usually under a recurring contract. Providers of this kind are called managed service providers (MSPs).
- Managed security services: monitoring for threats, responding to alerts and running agreed security controls. Providers that specialise in this are often called managed security service providers (MSSPs).
UK government market research groups MSP offerings into cloud solutions, IT infrastructure management, IT service management and managed security. Those categories are useful when comparing quotes, because a provider that does one of them well may not cover the others.

Specialist skills without a full-time hire
Most small businesses cannot justify a dedicated security specialist, and the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) addresses that directly in its small business cybersecurity guidance: “It’s OK if you don’t have the budget for a dedicated in-house cybersecurity expert. You still have options.”

NIST names two routes. The first is upskilling existing staff, so that someone in the business takes on defined security tasks. The second is outsourcing specialist work to an MSP, an MSSP or a fractional chief information security officer (CISO), meaning a senior security leader engaged for part of the week or for specific projects. For a business with no technical staff, outsourcing is usually the more realistic route. For a business that already has a capable employee, a narrower contract covering monitoring or a periodic review may be enough.
What UK small businesses report about risk and continuity
The UK government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026, commissioned by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and the Home Office, was fielded between August and December 2025. It reports the following practices among small businesses, compared with the previous survey year:
| Practice among UK small businesses | 2024/2025 survey | 2025/2026 survey |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted cyber security risk assessments | 48% | 41% |
| Had a formal cyber security policy | 59% | 52% |
| Had a business continuity plan covering cyber security | 53% | 44% |
These are reported practice rates. The survey does not show whether outsourcing caused any change, and it does not show that a provider would have raised these figures. What the table does show is where a provider’s conversation about risk reviews, written policies and continuity planning is most relevant. A provider can help assess gaps or implement controls the business has agreed to, but the survey does not establish that every business needs the same work or that an MSP contract guarantees resilience.
Using external cybersecurity providers
The same UK survey also reports how often businesses use an external provider for cybersecurity:

- Speed up your tasks with AI: Unlock new levels of productivity and creativity by upgrading to Intel Core Ultra processors with built-in AI.
- Supports multiple monitors: Connect up to four FHD monitors using DisplayPort and Daisy Chaining*. Or connect two 4K displays using HDMI 2.1 port and DisplayPort.
- Effortless upgrades: The tool-less entry and removable side panel let you quickly access the internal components, making upgrades convenient and stress-free.
- Ready for business: Keep your data secure with a hardware TPM security chip. And when you need to step away from your desk, simply secure your desktop using the built-in lock slot or padlock loop.
- Style meets sustainability: Dell Tower Desktop seamlessly combines elegance with sustainability. Its sleek, modern design, crafted from recycled materials and featuring refined corners, makes it a stylish addition to any home or office.
| Business size (UK) | Use an external cybersecurity provider |
|---|---|
| Micro businesses | 44% |
| Small businesses | 64% |
| Medium businesses | 70% |
These figures measure prevalence, meaning how many businesses use external help. They do not measure whether that help was effective. Larger businesses use outside providers more often, which fits the idea that a small team is the group most likely to lack in-house depth, but the survey does not test that explanation directly.
Monitoring and action outside working hours
Qualitative interviews in the same UK survey describe smaller organisations using MSPs because they lack capacity in-house. Interviewees valued MSPs that could monitor systems and act outside regular working hours. That is a reported benefit, not a promise that every support contract includes around-the-clock service. Many contracts cover only business hours, and out-of-hours response may be charged separately or handled on a best-effort basis.
A medium-sized construction business interviewed for the survey described the arrangement this way:
Recommended Free Tools
“Our MSP will generally bring any issues to my attention first. We’ve also got recently brought in a service with them where they will search for vulnerabilities and they will fix them.”

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
This is one business’s account of its own experience. It was not independently checked as a measured service result, so treat it as an illustration of what a proactive arrangement looks like rather than as evidence of how any particular provider performs.
Managing a growing technology footprint
Two sets of 2026 figures show how much small businesses depend on technology, although they measure different things.
In the UK Business Data Survey 2026, published by DSIT, 55% of small businesses used public cloud or third-party software or web solutions, and 14% used servers supplied by outsourced IT services companies. Using cloud software and hiring a general computer-support provider are separate decisions. Most of the first group are not measured as having an outside IT contract at all.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s 2026 report, which covers U.S. small businesses only, found that nearly 100% use at least one technology platform at work, and 84% plan to increase technology use over the next two to three years. These findings show reliance on technology and intended adoption. The report’s comparisons between technology intensity and business performance are correlational, so they do not show that support causes growth.

In practice, a provider may help with configuration, maintenance and coordination as a business adds platforms. How much of that work is included depends on the agreement.

A UK government study published in 2024 estimated 3,182 small and 6,623 micro MSPs. It also estimated £52.6 billion in combined managed-services revenue for 2022. Those revenue figures refer to 2022 activity, not 2026. The counts suggest that small and micro providers make up a substantial part of the UK market, which means a local business is likely to find many options. The study does not establish how many providers serve any particular town or sector.
How to compare providers
The options below differ in what they usually take on and in where the responsibility lies. They should not be treated as interchangeable.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

|---|---|---|
| In-house generalist | Day-to-day help, purchasing and local fixes | Time available for security and backups; who covers absence or holidays |
| Local break-fix or onsite technician | Repairs and visits when something breaks | Whether monitoring, patching and backups are included at all; call-out charges |
| Managed IT provider (MSP) | Ongoing management of devices, networks, cloud accounts and backups | Which tasks are covered and which are excluded; escalation path; contract exit terms |
| Managed security provider (MSSP) | Monitoring, alert response and agreed security controls | Who configures and monitors each control; who reports incidents and how |
When comparing contracts, check these areas in writing:
- Scope: which tasks are included, such as user support, device setup, networks, cloud accounts, patching, monitoring, backups and security incident response, and which are excluded.
- Hours and response: which hours are covered, what the response target is, whether out-of-hours response is staffed or best-effort, and whether it costs extra.
- Security accountability: who owns the administrator accounts, who configures and monitors controls, and what is documented.
- Continuity: what backups cover, who tests restores, and how the provider supports the business’s continuity plan.
- Fit and cost: compatibility with existing systems, the number of users and devices covered, contract length, onboarding and exit terms, and the difference between recurring and emergency charges.
These are due-diligence questions rather than a formal standard, and they do not identify a single best model. The right choice depends on the business’s size, its existing systems and how much it already does in-house.
What the evidence does not establish
- It does not show that hiring a provider increases revenue, productivity or security. The figures describe practice, reliance and intended adoption.
- The UK and U.S. findings describe different countries and should not be combined into one figure.
- The UK MSP market estimates refer to 2022 activity, from a study published in 2024.
- Interview quotations are individual accounts and were not verified as measured service results.
- The survey data show how often businesses use outside providers, not which provider or contract model works best.
Used carefully, these figures support one practical conclusion: a small business without in-house security depth has real options, and the value of an outside provider lies in the specific capabilities written into its contract.
