A storefront or library manager such as Heroic helps you access and install a game from a supported store; Proton or another Wine-based compatibility tool may then run that game’s Windows version on SteamOS. Neither step converts a license, bypasses a publisher’s requirements, nor guarantees that a particular game will work.
What Proton does—and what it does not do
Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. Many PC games are built for Windows, so SteamOS needs a way to handle Windows game software. Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games on Linux. Valve describes it as modified Wine combined with graphics API implementations; it also includes translation from DirectX to Vulkan. See Valve’s Proton documentation.

A compatibility layer is not a storefront. Proton does not sign you into an Epic, GOG, or Amazon account, provide access to a game you do not own, or download it from another store. You need a separate supported route to reach that library and install the game. Once installed, a compatible tool may be able to run its Windows build.
How the store, launcher, and compatibility layer fit together
Think of the process as three distinct jobs: account access, installation, and running the game. A launcher or library manager can handle the first two for stores it supports; Proton or another Wine-based tool handles Windows compatibility. Steam can also provide a convenient place to launch a non-Steam application, but adding a shortcut to Steam does not make the game a Steam purchase or establish that it is compatible.

| Component | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Store account and library | Provides access to games associated with your account. | That a given title runs on SteamOS. |
| Heroic Games Launcher | A third-party launcher whose project lists Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon Games support. Its components communicate with those stores; see the Heroic project. | Official status as a client from those stores, or a guarantee that every game in a library works. |
| Proton or another Wine-based tool | Attempts to run a Windows game on Linux through compatibility components. | A store login, a license, or a fix for every game-specific restriction. |
| Steam interface | Can launch non-Steam applications and make them accessible through Steam’s interface. | A compatibility certification for every third-party installation route. |
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says applications that are not on Steam can work with Proton and be usable on Deck. That is a statement about possibility, not a promise that all non-Steam apps or games work. Read the Steam Deck FAQ.
One documented route: install a supported game with Heroic
Heroic’s Linux quick-start guide describes a route for its supported stores: install Heroic, sign into a store account, choose a compatibility tool, install the game, and add it to Steam for access in Game Mode. Interface labels and available options can change between releases, so use the current Heroic Linux installation and quick-start guide for exact screens. This outline is not a hardware-tested guarantee.

- Install Heroic. Follow the current Linux guide and, if installing through a software manager, check that you have selected the Flatpak version described by the guide.
- Sign in to the relevant store. Use the account for the library you want to access. Heroic’s documented store coverage includes Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon Games; support for one does not imply support for every other storefront.
- Choose a compatibility tool if needed. The guide describes using Heroic’s Wine Manager to download a Proton-GE version. The appropriate tool can depend on the game, and choosing one does not ensure success.
- Install the game from Heroic. Use the launcher to select and install a game you can access through your account. Store and game requirements still apply.
- Add the installed game to Steam if you want it in Game Mode. Heroic’s guide describes adding games to Steam, where they appear under the Non-Steam tab. The shortcut provides a launch path; it is not a change to the game’s store ownership.
Other storefronts or launchers may need different tools and setup. Do not assume that the Heroic steps, store coverage, or compatibility choices apply to a launcher that its documentation does not cover.

Compatibility is title-specific. Before installing, check the game’s current Steam Deck status, whether it relies on anti-cheat, DRM, or a required launcher, and the relevant publisher and launcher policies. For a game launched through Heroic, a Steam badge describes Valve’s review of the game for Deck compatibility; it does not certify every Heroic configuration or the entire third-party installation path.

| Steam Deck badge | What Valve’s rating means |
|---|---|
| Verified | The game passes Valve’s checks without user configuration for full functionality. |
| Playable | The game functions but may require manual steps or adjustments. |
| Unsupported | Valve has identified incompatibility with Proton or specific Deck hardware. |
| Unknown | No review result is available. |
These badges are useful evidence, not a guarantee about a non-Steam installation. A title can also change after an update, and the storefront version or launcher path may differ. Valve’s compatibility program overview explains the ratings.
Why a Windows game may still fail
Proton support continues to develop, and Valve documents several areas that can block or complicate a title. The game may rely on a system component that is not yet supported, require a publisher-side change, or impose a policy that prevents use through Wine or Proton. Compatibility is therefore not the same as simply having a Windows executable.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Anti-cheat: Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye can work with Proton, but the game vendor or publisher must enable or configure support. Their presence does not mean a game will work automatically.
- DRM and anti-tamper: Protection systems can prevent a game from starting or delay compatibility.
- Launchers and frameworks: Some pre-game launchers, including certain .NET/WPF-based ones, can cause problems. A game may also depend on a launcher that is awkward to navigate with a controller.
- Media and input behavior: Video playback, text entry, controller access, and display behavior can differ from a Windows PC. Valve’s guidance discusses full controller access, on-screen keyboard support where text entry is needed, and avoiding required pre-game launchers where possible.
- Publisher rules: Heroic warns that some games may ban players for running them through Wine or Proton on an operating system the game does not support. Check the game’s current policy before trying an unsupported route.
Valve’s current technical notes on these issues are in its Steamworks Proton documentation; the relevant details can change as games and compatibility tools are updated.
What to try when a game does not launch or behave correctly
- Confirm the installation and account path. Check that the game appears in the intended store library and completed installation in its launcher. A compatibility layer cannot fix a missing license or failed download.
- Check the current Deck rating and game-specific notes. If the rating is Playable, look for the manual adjustments Valve identifies. If it is Unknown, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than assuming it will work.
- Look for an anti-cheat, DRM, or launcher requirement. Check current publisher, game, and launcher documentation for Linux or Proton support and any rules on unsupported operating systems.
- Review the selected compatibility tool. If you are using Heroic, consult its current guide and tool documentation for the available Wine or Proton-GE choices. A different version may help with some issues, but there is no universal version that fixes every title.
- Separate launch problems from usability problems. If the game starts but is difficult to use, check controller navigation, text-entry needs, display settings, and any required launcher. A successful start does not guarantee a good handheld experience.
- Stop if the publisher’s policy puts the account at risk. Do not treat a technical workaround as permission to bypass a game’s operating-system restrictions.
Which route should you use?
For a game already in Steam, Steam’s built-in Proton path is the most direct route. For a library on Epic, GOG, or Amazon Games, Heroic is a documented third-party option to access and install games, after which a compatibility tool may be needed. The choice is about getting to the library and creating a usable launch path—not about a universal ranking of launchers or a guarantee of game support.
If your priority is minimum setup, start by checking whether the title is available in Steam and review its Deck rating. If you already own it elsewhere, verify that the store is supported by the launcher you plan to use, then check the title’s technical requirements and publisher policy before installing. A Deck rating can inform the decision, but it cannot answer every question about a third-party launcher configuration.
