Short answer: Lidl and Aldi are often cheaper than traditional supermarkets in the comparisons available, but there is no universal lowest-cost store. In U.S. research, both discounters priced below the all-store average, while Walmart also ranked among lower-priced conventional chains. A separate UK basket found Aldi and Lidl close in price. Those results use different markets and baskets, so they cannot be combined into a single Lidl-versus-everyone ranking.
What the U.S. supermarket comparison found
Consumers’ Checkbook’s national comparison, last updated in November 2025, priced a 150-item basket across Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis–St. Paul, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Across those metro areas, ALDI’s prices were 30–40% below the all-store average, and Lidl’s were about 20–25% below it. These percentages compare each retailer with the average—not directly with one another or with Walmart.

Checkbook also identified Walmart as a consistently low-priced conventional supermarket, typically 12–30% below the average in each area. The national comparison does not establish one nationwide percentage by which Lidl is cheaper or more expensive than Walmart.

Consumers’ Checkbook’s supermarket comparison notes that ALDI and Lidl sell mostly their own brands and offer a narrower range of brands and sizes than conventional supermarkets. It used a modified basket for ALDI, Lidl, and Trader Joe’s to account for those differences. It also points to smaller-format stores and lower overhead as part of the discounters’ cost advantage.
How Lidl compares with Aldi and UK supermarkets
Which?’s September 2026 UK comparison priced a 93-item basket at an average of £159.48 at Aldi, £161.48 at Lidl with Lidl Plus, and £161.84 at Lidl without Plus. Aldi was therefore £2 cheaper than Lidl with Plus in that month’s basket; the difference is small, and it is specific to this UK comparison.

In this basket, Lidl Plus reduced Lidl’s reported total by 36p compared with Lidl’s non-member price. The comparison also uses loyalty prices for some other supermarkets, so a shopper’s result depends in part on whether they qualify for and use those offers.

Why the basket can change the winner
A supermarket price comparison is only as useful as its matching method. Lidl and Aldi’s smaller selections and emphasis on own-label products make exact brand-for-brand comparisons with full-range supermarkets difficult. A basket that compares the cheapest suitable own-brand equivalent can answer “what might this shop cost?” better than one that requires identical labels, but it is not a pure like-for-like national-brand test.
- Basket and package sizes: Check whether the comparison uses the same products and quantities, or substitutes comparable goods.
- Unit prices: Per-unit comparisons help account for different package sizes, particularly when an exact product match is unavailable.
- Brand mix: A basket heavy on national brands may behave differently from one built around store brands.
- Loyalty offers: Separate member and non-member totals when a price requires an account or card.
- Local availability: A multi-city survey or national monthly tracker is not a live quote for a particular branch or shopping list.
What an older Long Island study can—and cannot—show
A report by Katrijn Gielens, a marketing professor at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, tracked 27 Long Island stores from April 2019 through March 2020. Lidl commissioned the study. For prices collected in the first week of March 2020, it reported Lidl prices 33.8% below Stop & Shop and 39.6% below King Kullen. After Lidl entered the market, the report found no observable price differences between Lidl and Aldi or Walmart.

How to use these comparisons for your own grocery bill
- Start with your market. Treat U.S. and UK findings separately; the retailers, currency, and baskets differ.
- List the items you actually buy. Include your usual sizes and brands, then compare equivalent store-brand options where exact matches are unavailable.
- Compare per-unit prices. This reduces distortions from different package sizes.
- Count loyalty prices only if you will use them. Compare both member and non-member totals where a tracker reports both.
- Check local availability and current shelf prices. Published averages indicate broad patterns; they do not guarantee what a specific store will charge today.
The evidence supports a useful generalization, not a guaranteed winner: Lidl and Aldi tend to undercut traditional supermarkets in the cited comparisons, and Walmart can also be a low-price option in the U.S. Which one costs less for a household depends on its location, basket, brand choices, and use of loyalty discounts.
