How do LEGO bricks grip?
According to The LEGO Group’s explanation of how bricks work, studs on one element wedge between the internal tubes and the sides of the element above. LEGO calls the resulting holding effect clutch power. The company says evenly spaced internal tubes improve clutch power, helping models stay together as they grow.

This describes LEGO’s common brick system; it is not a universal explanation for every LEGO connection. LEGO identifies Technic as a different building system, so a stud-and-tube comparison alone cannot establish whether a Technic connector, beam or other specialized element will fit a particular part.
What building rules help compare ordinary bricks and plates?
Use height as an orientation aid
For common elements, LEGO’s brick facts state that three flat 1×1 plates stack to the height of one 1×1 brick. This is a useful reference when planning a build, but it is not a promise that every specialized element follows the same proportions.

Separate tight connections carefully
LEGO recommends using a brick separator when separating bricks that hold firmly because of their clutch power. The recommendation is especially relevant when a connection is difficult to pull apart by hand; it does not establish that every connection or separator is identical.
Do LEGO Technic and DUPLO pieces follow the same compatibility rules?
Technic uses a different building system
LEGO describes Technic as a different system from the common brick system. When checking a Technic build, compare the actual connector or beam type and the connection it is designed to make. LEGO’s Pick a Brick Technic connectors category groups relevant parts such as connectors and beams, but that category does not establish universal fit across all generations or brands.

DUPLO is larger, but do not assume every orientation works
LEGO says DUPLO bricks are twice the size of regular LEGO bricks and can be mixed with them. That broad statement should not be read as proof that every DUPLO and regular element attaches directly in every orientation. Check the specific pieces and intended connection rather than relying on scale alone.
Do old LEGO bricks fit new ones?
Yes, within the scope of LEGO elements, LEGO says that elements made more than a generation ago still fit those made today. The company made this claim in its quality statement dated 1 November 2018, which also says LEGO elements are made in high-precision moulds and tested for durability qualities including breaking and clutch power. This is LEGO’s statement about its own elements; it does not establish compatibility for third-party parts.

How to check a replacement LEGO part
- Find the set number. Use it to locate the relevant instructions or LEGO service route. LEGO’s guide to identifying set and piece numbers explains how these identifiers help with a missing or damaged part.
- Identify the piece precisely. Newer instructions list an element number. Many pieces also have a four- or five-digit design number molded on the inside. Note the color as well; visual similarity or a set name alone may not identify the right replacement.
- Search LEGO’s replacement-pieces service or Pick a Brick. LEGO says both element and design numbers can be used to search these routes. For Technic parts, its Technic connectors category can help narrow the part type.
- Confirm current availability. Search results do not guarantee that a particular part is in stock or offered in your region. Check the current listing and service options for your location.
A practical compatibility checklist
- Connection system: Determine whether the parts belong to the common stud-and-tube brick system or to Technic.
- Scale: Distinguish regular LEGO pieces from larger DUPLO pieces; mixed use does not mean every direct connection is supported.
- Shape and function: Compare whether the item is a brick, plate, connector, beam or specialized element, and look for the intended connection.
- Identity and availability: Match the piece number and color, then verify whether LEGO currently offers it through a replacement-pieces route or Pick a Brick.
