A lead-cooled reactor makes electricity by using liquid lead to carry heat away from its fuel, then transferring that heat across a heat exchanger to water or another secondary fluid. In a steam-cycle design, the heated water becomes steam, which spins a turbine connected to a generator. The lead and the water or steam are separate fluids in the heat-exchanger arrangement described by the IAEA; they transfer heat without mixing.
The short version: heat moves through separate stages
The reactor does not send electricity directly from fission to the grid. It converts energy in stages: fission heats the fuel; the lead coolant carries heat from the core; a heat exchanger passes that heat to a secondary circuit; and, in a steam-cycle plant, steam turns a turbine-generator. The turbine’s rotation drives the generator, which produces electrical power for delivery to the grid.

Think of the lead as the reactor’s primary heat carrier, not as the fluid that normally drives the turbine. In the steam-generator arrangement described in an IAEA technical document, lead flows on one side of exchanger surfaces while secondary coolant flows inside tubes on the other. Heat crosses those surfaces, but the two fluids remain in separate circuits. The exact equipment layout and number of circuits depend on the reactor design.

1. Fission heats the fuel
Inside the reactor core, nuclear fission releases thermal energy. The fuel heats up, and coolant flowing through the fuel region picks up some of that energy. The coolant must then carry the heat out of the core so it can be transferred to the power-conversion system.

2. Liquid lead carries heat away from the core
In a lead-cooled fast reactor, the primary coolant is liquid lead. Some other fast-reactor concepts use a lead-bismuth mixture, but “lead-cooled” and “lead-bismuth-cooled” are not interchangeable labels: the coolant used in a particular design should be named specifically. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes lead as one of the liquid-metal coolants used in fast reactors and describes mechanical pumps circulating coolant.
As the coolant passes through the core, it becomes hotter. It then flows toward heat-transfer equipment, where its energy can be handed to a different fluid circuit. The lead remains in the primary circuit in the design arrangements discussed here; it is not the water that is heated into turbine steam.
3. A heat exchanger transfers energy across a boundary
A heat exchanger allows energy to cross from one fluid to another without requiring the fluids to mix. In the IAEA example, lead flows through the steam generator’s shell side, while the secondary coolant flows inside tubes. The heated lead gives up energy through the exchanger surfaces, and the fluid on the other side receives it.

4. The secondary circuit produces steam
When water is used as the secondary fluid, heat from the lead circuit raises its temperature until it becomes steam. The DOE explains that fast-reactor heat can be transferred directly to a water loop or through intermediate loops that eventually heat water to make steam. These are different possible arrangements; a lead-cooled plant does not necessarily have one fixed number of circuits.
In a direct transfer arrangement, the primary coolant transfers heat to the water loop through the heat-transfer equipment. With an intermediate loop, another fluid carries heat between the primary lead circuit and the water-and-steam cycle. Adding an intermediate circuit changes the plant’s heat-transfer layout, but it does not change the basic energy path: fission heats the primary coolant, and heat ultimately reaches the fluid used to produce steam.
5. Steam spins a turbine and generator
Steam under pressure expands through a turbine, causing its blades and shaft to rotate. The turbine is coupled to a generator, which converts the shaft’s mechanical rotation into electricity. The electrical output is then delivered through the plant’s electrical systems to the grid.
The steam is not used up by turning the turbine. After leaving it, steam is cooled in a condenser and becomes water again. That water can be returned to the steam cycle and reheated. The condenser transfers leftover heat to an external heat sink, such as the cooling system used by the plant. This rejection of remaining heat is part of the cycle: not all of the reactor’s thermal energy becomes electricity.

6. Cooled lead returns toward the core
After transferring heat in the steam generator or other heat-transfer equipment, the lead is cooler than it was when it left the core. It circulates back toward the core, where it can pick up heat again. This recurring movement of coolant is the primary heat-transport loop.
The CORDIS project reporting on the ALFRED concept describes one such conceptual path: primary lead passes through a steam generator and then flows down through a cold plenum toward the core. That component placement is specific to the ALFRED concept and should not be assumed for all lead-cooled reactor designs.
What the circuits do—and why their separation matters
A useful way to understand the plant is to follow each fluid by its role rather than assume all reactors use the same piping arrangement.
- Primary circuit: lead, or in some concepts a lead-bismuth mixture, removes heat from the fuel and carries it to heat-transfer equipment.
- Intermediate circuit, if included: an additional fluid loop transfers heat onward between the primary coolant and the water-and-steam system.
- Water-and-steam circuit: water receives heat, becomes steam, expands through the turbine, and is condensed back into water for reuse.
- Heat-rejection system: an external heat sink receives heat that remains after the turbine and is not converted into electricity.
These are functional descriptions, not a claim that every plant has four separately named loops. DOE describes both direct transfer to water and transfer through intermediate loops. The IAEA’s shell-and-tube example shows how lead and secondary coolant can remain separated at a steam generator, while the ALFRED reporting gives a particular primary-flow path. Those sources describe design options and examples, not one mandatory blueprint.

How the ALFRED example illustrates the flow path
ALFRED is a specific lead-cooled reactor concept discussed in CORDIS project reporting. Its described primary flow path helps make the sequence tangible: lead takes heat from the core, passes through a steam generator, gives up heat, and then travels down through the cold plenum back toward the core. The steam generator is where energy moves from the primary lead side into the secondary side.
The project material also discusses natural circulation for decay-heat removal. That is a safety-related heat-removal mode after the reactor is shut down, not proof that normal operating coolant flow in every lead-cooled plant is pump-free. DOE’s broad fast-reactor description identifies mechanical pumps as a way to circulate coolant. The normal operating flow path and the post-shutdown decay-heat path are distinct questions, and details depend on the design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What higher operating temperature does—and does not—establish
DOE says fast reactors operate at higher temperatures than water-cooled reactors, allowing more thermal energy to be converted into electricity or process heat. This is a general explanation of potential, not a measured efficiency figure or guaranteed performance result for a particular proposed lead-cooled plant. A higher operating temperature alone does not establish the plant’s net electrical efficiency, steam conditions, output, or pump power.

What varies from one lead-cooled design to another
The phrase “lead-cooled reactor” identifies an important coolant choice, but it does not specify the whole power plant. Designs may differ in their heat-transfer arrangement and equipment. DOE describes direct transfer to a water loop as well as transfer through intermediate loops; the IAEA example specifies lead on the shell side and secondary coolant inside tubes; and the ALFRED report describes its own conceptual primary flow path.
- Number of circuits: heat may pass from lead directly to a water loop or through one or more intermediate loops before reaching water.
- Heat-exchanger arrangement: which fluid flows on the shell side or inside tubes is a design detail, not a property implied by the words “lead-cooled.”
- Coolant circulation: pumps are described for fast-reactor coolant circulation generally, while natural circulation appears in ALFRED material for decay-heat removal. Neither point establishes the normal circulation method of every design.
- Power-cycle performance: steam temperature, pressure, net efficiency, and pump parasitic load require design-specific figures. The broad descriptions here do not support a quantitative comparison of those values between plants.
For a fair comparison of two actual concepts, compare the same categories for both: loop count and arrangement, exchanger geometry, normal and decay-heat circulation, and secondary-cycle conditions. Without comparable, design-specific values, a numerical performance ranking would be unsupported.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “The lead boils to make turbine steam.” In the cited steam-generator arrangement, heat crosses a surface into a separate secondary circuit. The reactor coolant is not the turbine steam.
- “Every lead-cooled reactor has the same number of loops.” DOE describes direct water transfer and intermediate-loop arrangements, so circuit count and layout are design choices.
- “Lead-cooled always means lead-bismuth-cooled.” Lead and lead-bismuth are distinct coolant descriptions; use the one that applies to the cited concept.
- “Natural circulation means no pumps are needed during normal operation.” The ALFRED material’s natural-circulation discussion concerns decay-heat removal. It does not establish pump-free normal operation across the technology.
- “Higher temperature proves a specific efficiency.” Higher temperature can enable more conversion of thermal energy or process heat in general, but it does not supply a plant-specific efficiency result.
What is established—and what cannot be inferred
The basic energy path is clear: fission heats fuel, liquid metal carries heat away, a heat exchanger passes that energy to a secondary fluid, and steam can drive a turbine-generator before being condensed and reused. The sources also establish that circuit arrangements and equipment details vary by design.
