The printer deposited specially mixed concrete layer by layer inside a 32-by-32-foot printing envelope. The project demonstrated how construction-scale 3D printing can shape walls with less formwork; it was described as a statement of the technology’s potential, not a finished home proven ready for ordinary occupancy.
How did the printer build a two-story structure?
Unlike a desktop printer that makes a small object inside a cabinet, Kamp C’s construction printer worked at building scale. The fixed machine’s reported printing envelope measured 32 by 32 feet. It laid down specially formulated concrete in successive layers to form the structure. Futurism reported the dimensions and project details in 2020 (Futurism).

The printed structure covered 980 square feet across two stories. Kamp C also included solar panels and underfloor heating. Those features show that the demonstration incorporated building systems, but they do not establish that it was completed, certified, or occupied as a conventional residence.

Was the Kamp C house actually livable?
The project was characterized as a demonstration rather than a normal livable home. Kamp C project manager Emiel Ascione called printing it “mainly a statement,” intended to show the construction industry the accessibility and potential of the technique (Futurism). The reported presence of heating and solar panels is not, on its own, evidence of a record of occupancy, full interior completion, or approval for residential use.

What was unusual about its concrete and reinforcement?
The printer used a specially mixed concrete intended for extrusion and layering. Project manager Marijke Aerts said the mix included fibers and that the amount of wire-mesh reinforcement was limited. The printing process also avoided conventional formwork for the printed elements, since the material was deposited in the desired shape rather than poured into a prepared mold (Futurism).
Aerts told Futurism that the material’s compressive strength was three times that of “conventional quick build brick.” That is an attributed project claim, not a comparison supported in the report by independent test data or a defined testing protocol. Compressive strength is only one measure of structural performance; the claim alone cannot establish that a printed building is stronger overall or safer in every application.

Did 3D printing make the house faster or cheaper?
Aerts estimated savings of 60% on material, time, and budget, linking them to the reduced need for formwork and the printing approach. Futurism reported that estimate as a Kamp C project claim, not as the result of an independent cost study. The report does not establish a general savings rate for other buildings, nor does the estimate show how permitting, foundations, building services, finishing, or site work compare with conventional construction.
Printing can potentially place material more selectively and reduce some formwork and labor. The actual balance depends on the printer, printable mix, reinforcement design, building layout, and local approval requirements. Kamp C’s project illustrates those possibilities, but its figures should not be treated as a standard price or schedule for a house a buyer could order.

What the project does—and does not—prove
- It demonstrates: a fixed construction-scale printer can deposit concrete in layers to make a two-story structure.
- It reports: a 32-by-32-foot printer envelope, a 980-square-foot structure, fibers and limited wire mesh, and project estimates for strength and savings.
- It does not establish: an independently verified threefold strength advantage, a universal 60% cost or time reduction, a residential occupancy record, or the current status of any largest-printer record.
The distinction matters: a successful printing demonstration is evidence that the construction method can produce a building-scale form, not proof that printed concrete automatically replaces conventional construction or delivers a ready-to-live-in home at a set price.
