Komodo dragons have orange, iron-enriched material concentrated on their tooth tips and serrated edges. A 2024 study proposes that this coating helps maintain the teeth’s cutting edges, but it did not directly measure whether the coating slows wear in living dragons.
What researchers found on Komodo dragon teeth
Using chemical and structural imaging, researchers identified orange, iron-enriched coatings concentrated along the tips and serrations of Komodo dragon teeth. The finding was reported by LeBlanc and colleagues in “Iron-coated Komodo dragon teeth and the complex dental enamel of carnivorous reptiles,” published online on 24 July 2024 in Nature Ecology & Evolution (volume 8, pages 1711–1722; DOI 10.1038/s41559-024-02477-7).

The authors interpret the coating’s position as an adaptation that may help preserve the teeth’s cutting edges during puncture-and-pull feeding. That is an explanation for the observed structure, not the result of a direct experiment measuring tooth wear or showing how much the coating changes wear in a living dragon.

Ziphodont teeth are curved, blade-shaped and serrated. This shape is suited to cutting, and it makes Komodo dragons useful living animals to compare with extinct species that had similar teeth, including theropod dinosaurs. A similar tooth shape, however, does not establish that the animals had the same tooth chemistry or fed in the same way.

How the Komodo finding compares with other reptiles
The study compared Komodo dragon teeth with teeth from other living monitor lizards, or varanids, and crocodilians. Iron was present in teeth from other sampled reptiles too; the paper describes iron sequestration as probably widespread in reptile enamel. The conspicuous orange coating concentrated at the tips and serrations was especially notable in Komodo dragons and closely related ziphodont species.
So the key distinction is not simply whether a reptile’s teeth contain iron. It is where the iron-enriched material occurs and how visibly it forms a coating along cutting surfaces.

Do dinosaurs have iron-coated teeth?
The study does not establish that theropod dinosaurs had iron-coated teeth. Fossilization can alter tooth chemistry, making it difficult to detect original iron coatings consistently. The researchers found no evidence of iron sequestration in the fossil teeth they examined, but that result cannot show that iron was absent from every theropod tooth in life.

Some theropods had wavy enamel along their serrations. That is a structural enamel feature, distinct from the proposed chemical reinforcement seen in Komodo dragons; the two should not be treated as the same adaptation. Natural History Museum coverage of the study quoted lead author Aaron LeBlanc explaining that current technology cannot determine reliably whether fossilized dinosaur teeth had high iron levels because fossilization changes their chemistry.

David Hone, a carnivorous-dinosaur expert at Queen Mary University of London who was not involved in the study, said iron-tipped teeth are “at least possible” in other reptiles and worth looking for. That is a possibility for future investigation, not evidence that dinosaurs had the coating. Hone also noted that tyrannosaurs had thick, strong teeth and other adaptations against breakage—another kind of feature, not proof of iron reinforcement.
