Filtering, reporting, blocking and image warnings each address different risks, so none should be treated as proof that a sender or request is trustworthy.
Start by identifying the kind of message
Messages can use iMessage, RCS or SMS/MMS. Bubble color helps distinguish services, but it is not enough to determine whether a conversation is encrypted: both RCS and SMS/MMS can appear as green bubbles. Check the service in use and, for RCS, look for the explicit lock and “Encrypted” label.

Apple announced a beta rollout of end-to-end encrypted RCS on May 11, 2026, for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers. Availability is rolling out over time. The other person’s provider must also support encryption, so a compatible iPhone version alone is not enough. Apple’s announcement says that when RCS messages are end-to-end encrypted, they cannot be read while sent between devices; the conversation indicator is the practical check, not the bubble color. What each protection does—and where its boundary is
The controls address different parts of the problem. Filtering organizes some messages and notification behavior; reporting sends information about suspected spam; blocking stops delivery from a particular identifier; Sensitive Content Warning flags certain imagery. Their purposes are not interchangeable.

Apple does not publish a general measured percentage for how often these protections block scams. Their documented scope and exceptions are not a measured failure rate, but they do mean users should not treat any of the controls as comprehensive protection.
Set up and review unknown-sender filtering
In iOS 26, Apple calls the feature Screen Unknown Senders. It places messages from unknown senders in an Unknown Senders area and gives you control over notifications. Apple says the setting is off by default in iOS 26 unless the previous iOS 18 Filter Unknown Senders setting was enabled before upgrading. Labels and behavior can change between software releases, so confirm the options shown on your iPhone.
- Open Messages. Tap Filters, then Manage Filtering, to find Screen Unknown Senders and the available filtering options. Exact labels may vary by iOS version. Apple’s iOS 26 instructions.
- Review categories and notification choices. Apple says unknown SMS, MMS and RCS messages can be organized into Transactions and Promotions. In most regions, notifications from unknown senders are on by default; the United States, Brazil and India offer category choices. Your options depend on region.
- Check the Unknown Senders area when something is missing. Open the area to review a message you expected to receive. You can mark a sender as known after reviewing the message.
- Remember the reply exception. Filtering does not apply to a sender you have replied to three or more times, according to Apple. A conversation’s presence in the main list is therefore not a safety judgment.
Use filtering when you want less interruption or a separate place to review messages from people you do not recognize. It is an inbox and notification feature, not a way to certify that a sender, link or request is legitimate.

Report spam and block a sender separately
Reporting alerts the relevant service or carrier where the option is available; blocking targets delivery from a specific sender identifier. If your goal is both to report a suspicious message and reduce future contact from that identifier, treat these as two separate actions.
- For an iMessage report: Apple says the message and sender information are sent to Apple, and the message is permanently deleted from your iPhone.
- For an SMS, MMS or RCS report: Information may be shared with the carrier and its affiliates, depending on carrier and region. If the reporting option does not appear, Apple directs you to contact your carrier.
- To stop delivery from a particular identifier: Block the contact or number separately. Apple says messages from that blocked contact or number are not delivered.
- If the person switches identifiers: Apple advises adding a suspected blocked sender’s new number or email address to the contact information to block future communication from it.
- For a group conversation: Apple says the group cannot be blocked as a whole.
Apple’s instructions for reporting spam and blocking senders describe the available actions and their limits. Neither reporting nor blocking confirms whether the original message was truthful, and a report by itself does not prevent additional messages.
Turn on sensitive-image warnings if they fit your needs
Sensitive Content Warning can blur an image or video that may contain nudity and warn you before you view or send it. Apple describes coverage in Messages and other Apple communication surfaces. This setting is specifically about potentially sensitive imagery, not the meaning or trustworthiness of a message.

- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Sensitive Content Warning.
- Review the setting and turn it on if you want warnings for potentially sensitive images and videos.
- If you are setting up protections for a child, review Screen Time and Communication Safety as well. Apple says turning on Screen Time and Communication Safety can enable Sensitive Content Warning automatically.

A dishonest sender or a convincing impersonation
Encryption protects the contents of a conversation in transit; it does not establish that an ordinary contact is who they claim to be, or that their story is true. Apple’s Contact Key Verification is a specialized iMessage security feature intended to detect certain sophisticated attacks against iMessage servers and help verify who is being contacted. It is not a general identity check for every message. Apple explains the feature in its Contact Key Verification overview and its iMessage security documentation.
Every phishing link or urgent request
Unknown-sender filtering has documented exceptions, and spam reporting depends on eligibility and carrier or regional support. Apple does not claim that these features intercept every malicious message, and no general scam-blocking rate is established. A message that reaches your inbox may still be fraudulent, even if it is not labeled or filtered.

Unencrypted transport
SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. RCS encryption depends on iOS 26.5, supported carriers on both sides and the conversation’s explicit encryption indicator. If encryption matters for a particular exchange, check the message type and indicator rather than assuming that green means encrypted.
Messages sent from a different number or address
Blocking applies to the identifier you blocked. If a suspected sender changes to a new number or email address, the old block cannot be assumed to cover it; add the new identifier to the contact information if you need to block it too.
Text, links and requests that are not sensitive imagery
Sensitive Content Warning concerns images and video that may contain nudity. Its documented purpose does not include assessing whether a text is accurate, whether a URL is safe, or whether a request for money or credentials is legitimate.

How to handle a suspicious message
When a message asks for money, a password, a verification code or urgent action, separate the question “Can this message travel securely?” from “Is this request genuine?” The encryption indicator addresses the first question; it does not answer the second.
- Pause before responding or tapping. Do not let urgency in the message substitute for verification.
- Verify through an independent route. Contact the person or organization using contact details you obtained outside the message, rather than relying on the link or phone number in the message.
- Check the service and encryption indicator if confidentiality matters. Identify whether the conversation is iMessage, RCS or SMS/MMS. For RCS, look for the lock and “Encrypted” label.
- Choose the relevant Messages action. Review unknown messages in Filters; report spam where available; block the sender separately if you want to stop delivery from that identifier.
- Use image warnings for their intended purpose. If the concern is potentially sensitive imagery, review Sensitive Content Warning settings rather than expecting it to assess the message’s claims.
These steps are user precautions, not guarantees that a scam will be identified or stopped. Apple’s published guidance describes the individual controls but does not provide a comprehensive scam-blocking promise.
