How Insect Antennae Inspired Responsive Nanopores

Researchers adapted the molecular-handling idea of insect olfactory sensilla to synthetic nanopores coated with adjustable fluid lipid bilayers.

A 2011 study showed how a fluid lipid coating can make a synthetic nanopore’s surface and effective opening adjustable. Inspired by the lipid-rich environment around insect olfactory sensilla, the researchers used mobile molecules in the coating to capture and slow selected proteins as they passed through the pore. The result was a laboratory method for tuning molecular interactions—not a replica of an insect antenna or a demonstrated field-ready sensor.

What insect olfactory sensilla have to do with nanopores

Insects detect odors with sensory structures called olfactory sensilla. Their lipid-rich environment helps capture and concentrate pheromone molecules and deliver them toward sensory cells. The inspiration for the nanopore work was this molecular-handling role: a surrounding chemical environment can help guide molecules to a sensing site.

Yusko and colleagues did not build an insect antenna. They applied fluid lipid bilayers to synthetic nanopores, creating a modifiable lining on the pore walls. Chemistry World’s report on the work described the translation from sensilla to coated nanopores.

How the lipid coating changes a synthetic nanopore

It makes pore chemistry adjustable

A nanopore detects molecules as they move through a tiny opening. The material lining that opening affects how molecules interact with the pore, so changing the surface chemistry can change the passage. In the 2011 study, the lipid coating provided a fluid surface that researchers could modify rather than leaving the pore walls as a fixed material.

It can tune the effective opening

The study reported adjustment of pore diameter in subnanometre increments. This is a technical scale reported for that experimental approach, not a general accuracy guarantee for nanopores or a promise that any coating can be tuned identically.

Mobile ligands add molecular specificity

The researchers incorporated mobile ligands into the bilayer. These molecules can interact with selected targets, adding a way to favor particular molecular interactions rather than relying on the pore opening alone. Together, the adjustable surface and mobile ligands let the team control both the pore environment and its interaction with a target.

What the study reported about protein passage

When targeted proteins passed through the coated pores, the study reported that their translocation slowed enough for individual events to be time-resolved. A longer, more controllable passage can make an event easier to distinguish and measure than a very brief transit. Nanopore expert Zuzanna Siwy, quoted by Chemistry World, said: “The passage time of molecules through the nanopore can be very well controlled, which increases the detection resolution and detection limits.”

The paper also reported that the coatings prevented clogging and eliminated nonspecific binding in the studied system. Those are findings from this experiment; they should not be taken as assured results for every nanopore, coating, protein, or chemical environment. Siwy also described the system as preventing protein molecules from “sticking” to the pore walls.

What responsive means—and what it does not mean

Here, “responsive” means that the synthetic pore’s effective dimensions and molecular interactions can be adjusted through a fluid lipid coating and its incorporated ligands. It does not mean that the device reproduces the full structure or sensing process of an insect antenna, or that it automatically detects arbitrary substances.

The work is an experimental approach to controlling molecules at a nanopore, not evidence of a commercial sensor. It does not establish field performance, product availability, or universal operation across samples. In contemporaneous commentary, nanopore expert Salvador Mafé called the results promising while noting that stability and performance in different chemical environments remained issues for future study.

How this fits into insect-inspired sensing

A 2025 review of insect-inspired sensing structures discusses other designs, including nanoporous MoS2 field-effect transistor sensors. These are a separate approach; their existence does not validate or continue the fluid lipid-bilayer method. The 2011 paper by E. C. Yusko and colleagues appeared in Nature Nanotechnology and is identified by DOI 10.1038/nnano.2011.12.
