GRID-INDIA operates the interconnected system through the National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC) and five Regional Load Despatch Centres (RLDCs); transmission utilities own and operate the physical lines and substations.
How electricity moves through India’s grid
A useful way to understand the system is as a chain of connected networks, not a dedicated wire running from one power plant to one city. Electricity is generated and fed into the grid; transmission infrastructure carries bulk power toward areas of demand; inter-regional and inter-state links connect networks across boundaries; intra-state transmission carries it onward; and distribution systems deliver it to end users. The National Electricity Plan describes the National Grid as including generating-station evacuation systems, inter-regional links, the inter-state transmission system (ISTS) and the intra-state systems of State Transmission Utilities (STUs). CEA and Ministry of Power, National Electricity Plan, Volume II: Transmission, section 2.2

The regional and state grids are interconnected and operate synchronously at a common frequency. This makes the grid one coordinated electrical system, even though its equipment and ownership are spread across many utilities. The route above is a system-level model: it does not mean that the electrons from a particular generator can be traced to a specific household.
What transmission lines and substations do
Transmission lines move bulk power
Transmission lines form the high-capacity links between generators, substations and load centres. Some connect networks within a state; inter-state lines form part of the ISTS; and inter-regional links connect the larger regional networks. The national plan treats these as connected layers of the grid rather than a single line owned by one operator.

Substations connect and manage the network
Substations are nodes in the high-voltage system. They connect transmission circuits and provide the infrastructure needed to manage power flows between parts of the network. Their precise equipment and control arrangements vary by utility and site; POWERGRID’s portfolio, for example, includes substations at several voltage levels. Not every Indian substation belongs to POWERGRID or follows an identical arrangement. POWERGRID, Power Transmission
POWERGRID reports 187,576 circuit-kilometres of transmission lines, 293 substations, 649,116 MVA of transformation capacity and 99.81% system availability as of 30 September 2026. These are figures for POWERGRID’s assets, not a total for India’s grid. POWERGRID, Power Transmission

Control centres monitor assets
Remote monitoring can help a utility observe and control its own network assets from control centres. POWERGRID says its National Transmission Asset Management Centre (NTAMC) provides central remote monitoring and control of its substations, supported by regional centres and a disaster-recovery centre. As of August 2026, POWERGRID reported 296 extra-high-voltage substations controlled and monitored through this system. This is the NTAMC’s reported coverage, not a count of all substations in India. GRID-INDIA, NLDC and RLDCs
GRID-INDIA (Grid Controller of India Limited) operates the all-India synchronous grid through the National Load Despatch Centre and five Regional Load Despatch Centres. The Ministry of Power describes system operators as maintaining real-time balance in the interconnected system and says GRID-INDIA facilitates inter-state transmission to utilities. Its 2024–25 annual report says GRID-INDIA coordinates with thousands of entities and balances generation and demand every 15 minutes under CERC regulations. That 15-minute statement concerns market and balancing coordination; it should not be read as meaning operators only take action at 15-minute intervals. Regional Power Committees
RPCs provide a forum for regional coordination among utilities. The CEA lists their work as including grid-operation matters, operational planning and outages, protection coordination, regional energy accounting and possible inter-state or inter-regional transfers. The CEA ties these responsibilities to section 29(4) of the Electricity Act, 2003, and describes their purpose as supporting stability and smooth operation of regional grids with economy and efficiency. CEA, RPC Secretariat
Central Electricity Authority
The CEA’s functions include advising on electricity-system planning and setting technical standards for electrical plants and lines, safety requirements, and grid standards for transmission-line operation and maintenance. It has a planning and standards role; it is distinct from the system operator and from the utilities that own transmission assets. CEA, Functions and Duties

Transmission utilities
The physical network is not all owned by one entity. The national plan distinguishes inter-state transmission from intra-state transmission and identifies STUs with state-level systems. POWERGRID is a major transmission licensee, while state transmission utilities and other licensees are part of the broader infrastructure. Company asset figures should therefore not be mistaken for national grid totals. CEA and Ministry of Power, National Electricity Plan, Volume II: Transmission
How the responsibilities fit together
- Transmission utilities provide and manage physical assets such as lines and substations.
- GRID-INDIA’s control centres coordinate operation of the interconnected system across national and regional levels.
- RPCs bring regional utilities together on operational coordination and related matters.
- CEA supports system planning and establishes technical and safety standards within its functions.
These responsibilities overlap in the practical goal of a stable grid, but they are not interchangeable: controlling system operation is different from owning a transmission line, setting standards or coordinating utility discussions.

What national grid figures can—and cannot—tell you
POWERGRID’s published line, substation, capacity and availability figures describe its own transmission portfolio as of 30 September 2026. Its NTAMC monitoring count describes its own covered assets as of August 2026. Neither set should be added together or presented as a complete inventory of Indian transmission infrastructure. CEA’s transmission reports page displayed monthly completion reports through July 2026 when accessed on 7 October 2026; that is the latest reporting status noted there, not a national asset total. CEA, Transmission Reports
A national overview also cannot establish the exact route electricity takes to an individual consumer, the detailed instructions used in dispatch, or the equipment and voltage transformation stages at a particular substation. Those details depend on the utility, location and system conditions.
