i-PRO is putting more video analytics on security cameras while keeping on-premises and cloud software in the picture. The result is not a move away from cloud surveillance: it is a more flexible architecture in which cameras can detect events locally, video-management systems can organize and search footage, and selected cameras can connect directly to a cloud service.

What edge AI means for a security camera

Edge AI means that some analysis happens on or near the camera instead of sending every video stream to a remote service for processing. An i-PRO camera can detect objects and produce metadata—structured information about what appears in a scene—alongside the video. That can make it possible to search or respond to events without treating the camera as a passive recorder.

In its January 2025 outlook, i-PRO presented edge computing, AI, cloud computing, and data integration as connected trends. The company argued that local processing can reduce reliance on cloud compute, improve response time, and avoid compression loss. Those are i-PRO’s stated benefits, not independently measured results in the announcements cited here. The same outlook emphasized that cloud deployments still offer flexibility and scale, and that a compatible video management system (VMS) is needed to interpret analytics data. It also said human operators remain central to decisions informed by AI. i-PRO’s 2025 outlook

Where i-PRO’s generative AI runs

“Generative AI on a security camera” can refer to different tasks and system designs. i-PRO’s announcements describe both real-time analysis on the camera and natural-language searches handled by additional software. Those functions should not be treated as one processing path.

Recorded-video search with Active Guard

Finding a person or event in recorded footage is a separate job from detecting it live. For the new X-series cameras, i-PRO describes forensic search through Active Guard, which uses camera-generated metadata. The camera handles detection and feature extraction; the search workflow still relies on software beyond the camera.

Active Guard 3.0, announced in 2025, uses a different arrangement: its natural-language generative-AI search engine runs on an on-premises Active Guard server and works with best-shot images and metadata generated by i-PRO AI cameras. i-PRO said this feature could operate without an external internet connection and could extend to some non-AI cameras through X-series AI Processing Relay. That does not mean the search engine itself runs on those cameras. The Active Guard 3.0 announcement

How edge and cloud deployments compare

Edge processing and cloud management can be combined. In March 2026, i-PRO and Milestone announced direct connections from selected i-PRO cameras to Arcules, Milestone’s video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) platform. In the announced configuration, the cameras connect without an on-site server, recorder, or gateway. The release says camera-side people and vehicle analytics run at the edge, with relevant metadata and event video sent to the cloud. It also describes local SD-card recording and compatibility alongside existing XProtect installations. Support was for selected cameras, with expansion planned through 2026; the announcement does not establish that every i-PRO camera works with Arcules. The Arcules announcement

Deployment pattern Where processing and search happen Data movement and resilience Integration and operational considerations
Camera plus on-premises VMS or Active Guard Live analytics can run on the camera. Active Guard 3.0’s generative-AI recorded-video search runs on an on-premises server. Active Guard 3.0 was described as able to run without an external internet connection. Video and metadata handling depend on the local system’s configuration. Active Guard integrates with named VMS platforms. Local servers and software must be administered and maintained.
Selected cameras connected directly to Arcules Camera-based people and vehicle analytics run at the edge; cloud service handles the cloud-managed video workflow. i-PRO and Milestone say relevant metadata and event video go to the cloud and describe local SD-card recording. Independent bandwidth and resilience testing is not established in the announcement. The announced setup removes the need for an on-site server, recorder, or gateway. It can coexist with XProtect installations, but applies to selected supported cameras.
Hybrid local and cloud system Processing and storage can be split between camera, on-premises VMS or server, and cloud services according to the selected products and configuration. The sources describe hybrid options but do not establish one universal rule for which video, clips, or metadata leave a site. Compatibility, licensing, bandwidth, storage, maintenance, and access controls need to be checked for the particular VMS, cameras, and cloud service.

These distinctions matter when evaluating privacy and network use. Local analytics and metadata-first transfer may reduce unnecessary movement of raw video, but they do not by themselves determine what a particular system records, uploads, retains, or who can access it. Those outcomes depend on configuration and organizational requirements. i-PRO and Milestone describe the Arcules camera behavior as product capabilities; the cited release does not provide independent tests of bandwidth savings or resilience during outages.

Interoperability and the enterprise IT connection

Security cameras increasingly operate as part of a broader software and network environment. i-PRO’s named integrations include Milestone Arcules and XProtect, Genetec Security Center, Luxriot, and i-PRO VideoInsight. Active Guard provides a way to search analytics data within supported VMS workflows, rather than requiring every organization to replace its video-management platform to adopt new camera functions.

The platform approach also extends beyond conventional security applications. In September 2026, i-PRO announced that Kepler Vision Technologies’ Night Nurse application would run directly on a GenAI fisheye camera for patient-safety monitoring, including detecting situations such as a patient attempting to leave a bed or a potential fall. The company said the application would be available through selected authorized resellers and channel partners by October 2026. This is one announced partner use case, not a complete catalog of compatible applications. The Kepler Vision announcement

What the product range says about deployment choice

Entry-level edge analytics

i-PRO’s March 2025 U-series announcement described 28 models: 15 with edge-processed AI analytics and 13 non-AI replacement models, in dome, box, and bullet form factors. The company listed intrusion, loitering, direction, line-crossing, and speed detection among intended applications. These are figures and capabilities from that dated announcement, not a guarantee of current regional stock or lineup. The U-series announcement

Fisheye cameras with on-camera generative AI

The newer X-series fisheye products combine panoramic coverage with free-text detection processed on the camera. That can suit sites where one camera must cover a wide area and operators want to define detection targets in natural language. Recorded-footage investigations still involve Active Guard, so buyers should distinguish the camera’s live analytics from the software and infrastructure needed for search.

Questions to settle before choosing an architecture

  • Which task must run live? Confirm whether the requirement is real-time detection, recorded-video search, cloud monitoring, or a combination; they may use different components.
  • What data must leave the site? Establish whether the design sends continuous streams, event clips, metadata, or some combination, and define retention and access policies.
  • What happens during a network interruption? Verify local recording behavior, storage capacity, alert handling, and how the system recovers. Vendor descriptions are not substitutes for evaluating the specific deployment.
  • Will existing cameras and VMS remain in service? Check model and software compatibility, supported integrations, and whether a phased migration is possible.
  • What does the full operating model require? Account for servers or gateways where needed, cloud bandwidth and storage, licensing, maintenance, cybersecurity administration, and staff skills.
  • Is the camera and accessory available for the required region and installation? Confirm current model availability, supported firmware, mounting hardware, and any regional or channel limitations with the manufacturer or integrator.

Why this brings physical security closer to enterprise IT

i-PRO’s strategy links cameras to analytics software, VMS platforms, and cloud services instead of treating surveillance as a stand-alone recording system. Local processing gives organizations an option to analyze at the camera; on-premises tools can support search without an external internet connection; and selected models can use direct cloud connections. The practical direction is greater software integration and deployment choice—not a claim that every security system has converged on one architecture, or that cloud video is going away.
