Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSnap Layouts became useful to me when I stopped dragging and resizing each window into place: I chose a layout, snapped one app into a zone, then used Snap Assist to fill the open spaces. Windows 11 offers this as a built-in arrangement workflow—not a guaranteed productivity boost. Microsoft documents how it works, but its guidance does not quantify time saved.
What changes when you stop placing every window by hand?
Manual placement means dragging a window to a screen edge or corner, adjusting its size, and repeating the process for the next app. Snap Layouts lets you choose a predefined arrangement first. After you place the first window in a zone, Snap Assist can offer other open windows to fill the remaining spaces.

The difference is in the sequence: select an arrangement, assign windows to its zones, and let Windows handle the positioning. It is an alternative to manual dragging, not a promise that every task will be faster.

- Open a desktop app and point to its maximize button, or press Windows+Z, to open the Snap Layouts menu. Microsoft Learn describes both ways to access the layouts in its Support snap layouts for desktop apps on Windows 11 documentation.
- Select the zone where you want the active window to go. The available arrangements can vary with the screen and configuration.
- When Snap Assist displays other open windows, select one to place it in a remaining zone. Continue choosing windows until the arrangement suits your work.
- If you do not want to use a predefined layout, drag a window to a screen edge or corner and drop it when the snap guide appears. Windows can then offer other open windows through Snap Assist.
Microsoft Support explains the mouse, keyboard, and touch approaches in Snap Your Windows. The precise prompts may differ by app or setup.

Which window-snapping method fits your workflow?
| Method | How you invoke it | Placement and help filling spaces | App or settings caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual mouse snapping | Drag a window to an edge or corner and drop it into a displayed position. | Places the window where the snap guide indicates; Snap Assist can offer other open windows. | Prompts depend on Snap settings and app behavior. |
| Snap Layouts | Hover over the maximize button or press Windows+Z. | Choose a zone in a predefined arrangement; Snap Assist can help fill the remaining spaces. | Some desktop apps may not show layouts automatically. |
| Keyboard snapping | Use Windows+Arrow with the active window; Windows+Alt+Up or Windows+Alt+Down also snaps it to the top or bottom half. | Moves the active window among snap positions without selecting a layout menu; Snap Assist may offer other windows depending on settings. | Shortcuts are documented by Microsoft, but available behavior can depend on configuration. See Keyboard shortcuts in Windows. |
These are functional differences, not speed rankings: Microsoft’s support pages explain the controls but do not provide a comparative benchmark.
What to check if Snap prompts are missing
Snap behavior is configurable. Open Settings > System > Multitasking, turn on Snap windows, and expand that section to review options for Snap Assist, the maximize-button flyout, the top-of-screen Snap bar, Snap groups, and snapping before reaching the screen edge. If a particular prompt is absent, these settings are a sensible first check.

Snap Layouts is not guaranteed to appear automatically in every desktop app. Microsoft says layouts appear automatically for most desktop apps, but some may not show them. For that app, try dragging the window to an edge or use the keyboard shortcuts instead.
Keep related windows together
After arranging a set of apps, Windows may surface Snap groups through taskbar hover, Task View, or Alt+Tab. That can help you return to a set of snapped windows rather than treating each window as an unrelated item. Snap groups are distinct from Snap Assist: the latter helps fill spaces during arrangement, while groups help surface snapped windows afterward. Microsoft’s How to Multitask in Windows page covers related multitasking tools.

What Snap Layouts can—and cannot—promise
For repeated side-by-side work, choosing zones and filling them can replace some of the repeated dragging and resizing. Whether that feels better depends on your apps and habits. Microsoft’s feature documentation establishes the controls and behavior, not a measured productivity gain, so there is no supported percentage or universal time-saving claim to attach to the feature.
