How I Keep a One-Person SaaS Ready for the Night Shift

A one-person SaaS needs monitoring for customer-facing services and quiet background jobs, protected backups, reachable alerts, and a tested recovery path.

A one-person SaaS needs more than an uptime check: it needs a way to notice failures, protect data, reach its operator, and make recovery steps clear. The goal is not to prevent every outage. It is to reduce the time a problem goes unnoticed and preserve a workable path back.

Why one uptime check is not enough

When you run a SaaS alone, you are both the person building the service and the person responding when it breaks. A homepage check can show that the front door answers while a scheduled billing, email, sync, or backup job has quietly stopped. Monitoring needs to cover what customers use and the background work that keeps the product dependable.

Think of the system as five layers: detect a problem, notify someone who can act, limit what an incident can damage, recover service and data, and communicate clearly with customers. This is an operational metaphor, not a promise of fail-proof software or a replacement for human response.

What the resilience layers should do

Detect customer-facing and background failures

Check the public application and a critical API or workflow, not just whether a server responds. For scheduled and long-running work, use a heartbeat: the job reports that it completed, and an alert fires if the expected signal does not arrive. Holter describes external checks and heartbeats for background work as product capabilities; that is an example of a tool category, not an independent standard or proof of effectiveness. Holter

Route alerts to a channel you will notice

An alert that lands in an unattended inbox is not much of a safeguard. Choose a primary route you actually monitor, then consider a separate fallback for high-impact events. NCSC advises SaaS users to understand how provider notifications arrive and to keep provider contact details valid, so you know how outage information will reach you. UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) SaaS security guidance

Contain damage and protect recoverable data

A backup is useful only if an incident cannot destroy every copy and you know how to restore it. NCSC recommends resilient backups for critical SaaS data and separation between the application and backup service so they do not share the same blast radius. Consider what happens if an attacker, account lockout, or provider incident affects the primary system; keep a protected copy and ensure the credentials needed to recover it are not exposed to the same failure.

Backup products are one category of the resilience plan, not evidence that recovery will work in your particular setup. Rewind describes SaaS backup and recovery services, but its page does not establish independent performance results. Rewind

Prepare emergency access and recovery steps

Write down how to restore data, rebuild or reconfigure the service, and regain access if ordinary login or identity controls fail. NCSC discusses disaster recovery steps, configuration-as-code, and emergency or “break glass” access. It also recommends monitoring use of that emergency access and sending high-priority notifications by multiple routes. Keep the recovery instructions somewhere available during an outage, and restrict access to them appropriately.

Communicate without confusing a status page with a fix

A public status page can help customers distinguish a known incident from a problem on their own connection, but it does not restore service. NCSC advises familiarity with provider outage reporting; Holter presents status pages as a product feature. Treat the page as a communication channel alongside direct incident updates, not as a substitute for response.

A practical first-pass checklist

This checklist combines the controls above into a starting point; it is an editorial synthesis, not a verbatim NCSC checklist.

  1. Check the customer path. Monitor the public application and one critical API or user workflow from outside your own infrastructure.
  2. Heartbeat important jobs. Add completion signals for scheduled or background work whose failure would affect customers, revenue, or recoverability.
  3. Alert on backup failures. Monitor whether backups complete, not merely whether a backup tool is installed.
  4. Keep independent protected copies. Separate backup access and storage from the primary application’s likely failure modes.
  5. Document restoration and emergency access. Keep clear steps for restoring data, rebuilding configuration, and reaching break-glass credentials.
  6. Verify provider outage channels. Know where your cloud and SaaS providers publish incidents, how they notify you, and whether your contact details are current.
  7. Exercise the recovery path. Periodically test that you can restore and that the written steps match the system you actually operate.

Decision axis What to evaluate
Endpoint coverage Can it check customer-facing URLs and the workflows that matter, rather than only a process or host?
Background jobs Does it support heartbeats or another way to detect a job that stops reporting completion?
Alert routes Can an urgent alert reach you through a primary channel and a practical fallback?
Status communication Does it support a status page, and can you update customers through other routes during an incident?
Operating burden Hosted monitoring can reduce the work of running monitoring infrastructure. Self-hosting may appeal if you want control over monitoring data, but it adds another service you must maintain.
Data recovery Monitoring cannot replace backups. Check separation of backup copies and whether restoration has been demonstrated in your own environment.

Checkmate describes a self-hosted monitoring option, while Holter describes hosted monitoring capabilities. Their pages can help identify approaches to investigate, but they are vendor or project descriptions rather than independent assessments. Checkmate project page

What a vendor’s backup claim does—and does not—tell you

Notion says that its customer and system data is backed up daily at minimum, and that backups are automated, encrypted, monitored, and alerted. That is Notion’s stated practice on its own page, not a universal SaaS backup schedule or evidence about your application’s backups. Notion security and privacy information

Set a realistic resilience goal

A useful night-time setup makes three things more likely: you notice important failures sooner, you retain a recoverable copy of critical data, and your next action is written down before the incident begins. It cannot guarantee uninterrupted uptime; it can make an outage less likely to become an unnoticed, unrecoverable, or poorly communicated one.
