Chapter 1 was being introduced in waves through the pre-release build, with the Forgotten Temple planned as the hub for chapter objectives and progress. As of the official Update 7 notes dated through October 1, 2026, that material was still in development; the notes do not establish that the complete chapter had launched or confirm a Chapter 1 release date.
What is the difference between a Hytale chapter and an update?
An update is the game’s ongoing improvement layer: it can add or refine systems, tools and polish between larger releases. A chapter is intended to be a more substantial content milestone in Exploration Mode, with new content and mechanics that move the Cursebreaker Arc forward. Hytale summarized the distinction in its May 26, 2026 Update 5 notes: “each Update brings system improvements, tooling, and polish that keep the game evolving between bigger releases.” It describes chapters as “the bigger moments: new content, new mechanics, and where the Cursebreaker Arc lore slowly kicks in.”

The distinction is about purpose and scope, not a promise that every update is small or every chapter arrives as one all-at-once download. Update 7’s pre-release notes, for example, included waves of content associated with Chapter 1. Those notes show that chapter material can be delivered through an update channel while still being part of the larger chapter rollout.
| Question | Updates | Chapters |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Systems, tooling and polish between larger content releases. | Larger Exploration Mode content drops. |
| Story role | Not described as the main mechanism for advancing the Cursebreaker Arc. | Advance the Cursebreaker Arc and gradually introduce its lore. |
| Player progression | May improve or expand game systems; no general chapter-objective structure is specified for updates. | Planned objectives and a chapter screen intended to track progress and unlock cosmetics. |
| How Chapter 1 content appeared in the cited notes | Update 7 pre-release notes recorded staged content additions. | Chapter 1 material was described in first and second waves, with further changes recorded through October 1, 2026. |
How chapter progression is meant to work
The Forgotten Temple is the planned hub
In Hytale’s July 16, 2026 Chapter 1 preview, the Forgotten Temple is presented as the place players will use to orient themselves and progress through Early Access chapters. The temple is meant to evolve as chapters arrive. That makes it more than a setting: it is intended to be a visible interface for the longer progression structure.

Objectives connect play to progress
The preview describes a planned chapter screen that will show progress through objectives and unlock cosmetics. Game Director Simon called its purpose “to make the chapter screen feel like a roadmap for your progress through Early Access.” This is a stated design goal, not a guarantee that every chapter will use an identical objective list, reward structure or interface. The preview does not provide a complete list of Chapter 1 objectives, the exact number of cosmetics, or the conditions for every unlock.
In practical terms, a chapter is meant to give players a larger destination to work toward, while the chapter screen and temple help make that progression legible. The materials cited here do not establish that the chapter system replaces ordinary exploration or specify that every player must complete every objective to access later content.

What happened with Chapter 1 before its full release?
Chapter 1 was presented as work in progress, and its pre-release delivery was staged. Hytale’s July preview said that almost everything shown could change before release. The subsequent Update 7 notes described a first wave on September 3, 2026, and a second wave on September 24, with players able to begin engaging with chapter content by visiting the Forgotten Temple in pre-release. Those same notes said development was active and that systems such as rune abilities remained subject to change.
The notes were updated with further changes dated October 1, including potion cooldowns and a Wither Modifier Runestone. These entries demonstrate ongoing iteration in the pre-release build; they are not evidence that all Chapter 1 content was complete or that Chapter 1 had formally launched for everyone. The distinction matters: being able to try some chapter content in pre-release is not the same claim as a finished chapter release.

Timeline in the official materials
| Date | What Hytale said or recorded | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| July 16, 2026 | The Chapter 1 preview offered a rough estimate of “within the next 2–3 months” and said a precise date would be provided closer to release. | A dated estimate only, not a confirmed launch date. |
| September 3, 2026 | Update 7 notes announced the first wave of Chapter 1 content in pre-release; the rune ability system and other content remained changeable. | Some Chapter 1 material was available for testing in that build. |
| September 24, 2026 | The notes described a second wave and said players could begin engaging with chapter content through the Forgotten Temple in pre-release. | A continuing staged rollout, not proof of a complete chapter launch. |
| October 1, 2026 | Additional pre-release changes were recorded, including potion cooldowns and a Wither Modifier Runestone. | Work on the pre-release build continued at that point. |
The July estimate should be read in its original context. The official material cited here does not verify whether it remained current by October 11, 2026, and the later pre-release notes do not replace it with a confirmed date. It would be misleading to calculate a firm release date from “within the next 2–3 months.” Treat the timing as uncertain unless Hytale publishes a newer, explicit date.

- Open the Hytale Launcher.
- Open Settings.
- Enable Pre-Release.
- Launch the pre-release build and visit the Forgotten Temple to engage with the Chapter 1 content described in the notes.
The setting path is from Hytale’s Update 7 pre-release notes. Those notes describe the build as a place where content was actively being developed and subject to change. Accordingly, players should understand this as access to an evolving version, not a statement that the same content, balance or bugs will match a finished release. The cited notes do not give troubleshooting steps for launcher problems or specify account, platform or hardware requirements, so those details should not be inferred from this feature description.

Early Access is not described solely as a stream of new chapters. In the Chapter 1 preview, Hytale’s team said that after acquiring the game it returned to a version more than four years old, then concentrated on catching up, rebuilding tools and growing the team before shifting more attention to new content. This is the developer’s account of its production priorities, rather than an independently verified development history.

That context helps explain why the chapter model sits alongside updates. Hytale describes updates as the way the game continues to gain systems, tooling and polish between larger content moments; it describes chapters as the larger progression and story drops. The preview also cautions that Chapter 1’s material was not fixed. Early Access therefore involves both player-facing content and continued development of the foundations and features used to deliver it. The available statements do not specify a fixed chapter cadence, a guaranteed number of chapters before 1.0, or a complete schedule for the Early Access period.

What has—and has not—been said about version 1.0
The clearest specific connection to version 1.0 in the cited official material concerns WorldGen V2, not a complete list of everything planned for the full game. Hytale’s July 29, 2026 WorldGen V2 article says V2 is what the team is working toward for 1.0 and intends to support going forward. It is planned to become the primary generator and replace V1 once Orbis is ready. The transition is described as gradual, with V2 arriving in pieces.
For players with existing worlds, Hytale says V1 worlds are intended to remain playable rather than be deleted or abandoned. However, V1 will eventually stop generating new chunks, and some items may not move between V1 and V2 worlds. That makes the distinction relevant to long-running saves: world-generation versions can affect what happens when exploring beyond already generated terrain, and item transfer between versions is not guaranteed. The article does not specify when V1 will stop generating chunks or enumerate which items may not transfer, so players should not assume a date or a complete compatibility list.
WorldGen V2 is a stated part of the 1.0 direction, but the cited article is not a comprehensive 1.0 roadmap. It does not provide a confirmed 1.0 release date or establish that all Early Access systems, chapters or world changes will be complete on a particular schedule. Chapter 1 timing and WorldGen V2’s role should therefore be treated as separate questions: the July Chapter 1 estimate was a rough, dated estimate, while V2’s 1.0 connection is a development direction with caveats for existing V1 worlds.
Quick Recap
What players can reasonably expect
- Use updates to follow incremental development: they carry systems, tools and polish, and may also host pre-release content waves.
- Use chapters to follow larger Exploration Mode progression: their stated role is to move the Cursebreaker Arc forward, with the Forgotten Temple and chapter screen designed to make progress visible.
- Read pre-release notes as status reports for an evolving build: the Update 7 material records active development through October 1, 2026, rather than confirming a complete Chapter 1 launch.
- Keep timing claims attached to their dates: “within the next 2–3 months” was Hytale’s July 16 estimate, not a confirmed date that can safely be projected forward.
- Plan around world-generation caveats if maintaining saves: V1 worlds are intended to remain playable, but V1 chunk generation will eventually end and some items may not transfer to V2.
