Caltech researchers are studying how primordial germ cells—the early cells that eventually give rise to eggs and sperm—form in stem-cell-derived models of early human development. The work could clarify developmental mechanisms linked to some cases of infertility, but it is foundational research, not a treatment or clinical service available to patients.
What are primordial germ cells?
Primordial germ cells are early developmental cells that become the precursors of eggs and sperm. Their formation happens at a stage of development that is difficult to study directly in humans. Understanding when and where these cells emerge, and what influences them, can help researchers build a clearer account of how reproductive development begins.

What is the Caltech project studying?
A California Institute for Regenerative Medicine grant of $2.4 million supports a Caltech-led project involving Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz’s team and collaborators including Amander Clark of UCLA. The researchers will use two complementary stem-cell-derived models of early human development to map where and when primordial germ cells arise, study nearby tissues, and identify molecular signals that guide their development. The aim is a more detailed blueprint of early germ-cell formation, which may improve laboratory models and help scientists investigate how development can go awry. Caltech’s announcement describes the project and its aims.
Caltech also reports that Zernicka-Goetz’s team developed an integrated human stem-cell-derived embryo model in 2023 that was shown to generate primordial germ cells. That is the extent of the prior result described in the current announcement; it does not establish that such models can reproduce all aspects of human development.

How might this help research into unexplained infertility?
By examining the signals from surrounding tissues that guide primordial germ cells, researchers hope to learn more about the earliest steps that lead to egg- and sperm-forming cells. A more detailed understanding could help scientists investigate developmental explanations for infertility when its cause is not apparent, and make laboratory studies of early development more informative.
This is a possible research benefit, not a demonstrated diagnostic or therapeutic outcome. Caltech’s announcement reports no patient study, clinical trial, new test, or treatment, and it does not establish a timeline for clinical use.
Is this an infertility treatment patients can get now?
No. The project studies early germ-cell development in laboratory models. It does not offer a treatment, and the announcement does not say that laboratory-derived eggs or sperm are available for reproductive use.

WHO defines infertility as failure to achieve pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. These figures and the definition appear in the WHO’s 2025 guideline announcement.

How does the research differ from IVF and other established care?
IVF and other infertility-care options are clinical interventions chosen in light of test findings and patient preferences. The Caltech project is basic developmental research: it investigates how reproductive precursor cells form, rather than treating infertility in patients. WHO’s 2025 global guideline covers prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, including care that can progress from simpler management strategies to options such as intrauterine insemination or IVF. Which approach is appropriate depends on individual circumstances and local clinical guidance.
What oversight applies to research on lab-derived gametes?
Oversight depends in part on what researchers do with derived cells. The International Society for Stem Cell Research distinguishes in-vitro gametogenesis research that does not attempt fertilization and embryo generation from research in which derived gametes are used to create embryos. The latter requires specialized scientific and ethical review under its guidelines. These guidelines address research oversight; they are not authorization for clinical use. Applicable laws and policies vary by jurisdiction.
