Lyrics travel to a display—often a TV—but the audio and video may follow different connection paths. For a home setup, the key is knowing where playback, microphones, mixing, speakers, and lyrics each connect.
How a karaoke machine turns a song into a sing-along
The setup has two audio sources: the instrumental or karaoke backing track and the singer’s microphone. A mixer—either a separate component or circuitry built into the machine—balances those sources, may add vocal effects such as echo, and sends the result to speakers. Lyrics appear on a screen so singers can follow the song. In an all-in-one system, playback, microphone inputs, mixing, and speakers may be housed together. In a modular system, separate devices handle those jobs, giving you more choice but requiring compatible audio connections and more cabling.
How the audio and lyric-display paths differ
A common modular arrangement sends video from a phone or computer to a TV over HDMI, while the playback audio goes to a mixer. Microphones connect to mixer channels, and the mixer’s main output feeds powered speakers or a home audio system. Singa documents this arrangement and gives XLR microphone connections and RCA audio as examples; those connectors are specific to its example, not universal. See Singa’s connection guide.

Do not assume an HDMI connection sends sound to the TV speakers. The Singing Machine iSM2040 guide describes HDMI as a connection to a TV for lyrics and video, while its ISM9015 guide explicitly says HDMI output is video and lyrics only, with audio played elsewhere. Singa’s modular setup also separates playback audio from the video path. Check the manual for the exact model and decide where you want sound to come from before connecting devices.
Bluetooth can be useful for streaming playback, but it is not automatically a good route for a live microphone. Singa cautions that Bluetooth microphone audio may have enough delay to make singing difficult; it recommends connecting microphones to a mixer or using a karaoke speaker with a built-in mixer instead of connecting microphones directly to a TV over Bluetooth. The guide gives no measured latency figure, and this warning should not be read as a claim that Bluetooth playback always causes a problem.

What equipment a home karaoke setup needs
All-in-one system
An integrated unit may bundle playback, microphone connections, mixing, and speakers. Depending on the model, you may still need a TV or another display for lyrics, microphones, and any cables or accessories not included. Confirm the supported playback formats and how the TV connection handles audio before buying or setting it up.

A separate-component setup typically needs a karaoke playback device, one or more microphones, a mixer, speakers, and cables for the audio and microphone connections. Add an HDMI cable if you are sending lyrics or video to a TV. If you use passive speakers, they also need a suitable amplifier; powered speakers include their own amplification. The exact connections depend on the devices you choose.

Use this checklist to compare options:
- Playback: Check which sources are supported, such as USB, Bluetooth, AUX, Wi-Fi, or an app.
- Microphones: Confirm how many microphones can be used, whether they are wired or wireless, and which connectors and models are compatible.
- Mixing: Find out whether microphone level controls and vocal effects are built in or require a separate mixer.
- Sound output: Check whether speakers are built in or whether you need powered speakers or an amplifier with passive speakers.
- Lyrics and video: Identify whether lyrics appear on a built-in display, a TV, or both, and whether the TV connection carries audio as well as video.
- Setup effort: An integrated unit usually means fewer separate connections; a modular system allows component choices but calls for compatible ports and more wiring.
Why playback features vary by model
Karaoke machines do not share one standard set of inputs, outputs, or catalog features. For example, the Singing Machine iSM2040 support guide lists USB playback for MP4 video and MP3+G karaoke files, Bluetooth streaming, AUX input, microphone inputs, and HDMI output for a TV. Its guide also describes two included wireless microphones. These are features of that documented model, not promises about other machines. Check the iSM2040 support guide.
The same guide advertises access through its companion app to a catalog of “100,000+ songs.” That is the vendor’s stated catalog figure, not an independently verified or permanent count. The guide says unlimited access to the full catalog requires an optional in-app subscription and notes that certain plans include a 30-day trial; confirm current catalog and plan terms with the vendor. Connect the system in the order that matches your setup
- Choose the playback source. Decide whether tracks will come from a phone, computer, USB drive, built-in catalog, or another supported source. Verify that the machine accepts the source and file format you plan to use.
- Plan the lyric display. Connect the playback device or karaoke machine to the TV if required, using the model’s documented video output. Do not rely on HDMI as the sound route unless the manual confirms that it carries audio.
- Connect microphones to the mixing point. Use the machine’s microphone inputs or connect them to the separate mixer. Check connector type and wireless compatibility for the exact equipment.
- Route playback audio and microphone sound to speakers. With a modular setup, send playback audio and microphone channels through the mixer, then connect its main output to powered speakers or a suitable home audio system. With an all-in-one, follow the device’s instructions for its built-in speakers or audio output.
- Set levels and test. Start with playback and microphone levels low, then raise them until both are clear through the chosen speakers. If lyrics appear but sound does not, check the audio route separately from the HDMI video connection.
For any model-specific setting, accessory, supported format, or output behavior, use that unit’s current manual rather than assuming another machine works the same way.
