MLB home-field advantage depends on the round: the higher seed hosts every Wild Card game, the first two and potential fifth game of a Division Series, and the first two and potential final two games of a League Championship Series. In the World Series, the pennant winner with the better regular-season record hosts Games 1–2 and, if needed, Games 6–7.
Who hosts each MLB playoff series?
MLB’s 2026 postseason format has 12 teams, six in each league. The first two division winners in each league receive byes; the Wild Card matchups are No. 3 vs. No. 6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5. Hosting rights then follow the rules for each round, rather than one universal rule that gives the club with the best record home field throughout.

| Round | Series format | Who gets home field? | Games hosted by that club |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Card Series | Best of three; one ballpark | Higher seed | All games |
| Division Series | Best of five; 2-2-1 | Higher seed | Games 1, 2, and 5 if needed |
| League Championship Series | Best of seven; 2-3-2 | Higher seed | Games 1, 2, and 6 and 7 if needed |
| World Series | Best of seven; 2-3-2 | Pennant winner with the better regular-season record | Games 1, 2, and 6 and 7 if needed |
These are the current formats described by MLB’s 2026 postseason explainer and official Orioles postseason ticket information.
What do 2-2-1 and 2-3-2 mean?
Division Series: 2-2-1
The higher seed hosts Games 1 and 2. The other club hosts Games 3 and 4. If the series reaches a fifth game, it returns to the higher seed’s ballpark.

- NATURAL MATERIAL: Crafted from bamboo, this sportsboard offers a sturdy and lightweight build for dynamic performance.
League Championship Series and World Series: 2-3-2
The club with home-field advantage hosts Games 1 and 2. Its opponent hosts Games 3, 4, and 5. Games 6 and 7, if necessary, return to the first club’s park. The numbers describe the planned venue sequence, not a guarantee that every game will be played; a series ends as soon as one club has won enough games.
In a Wild Card Series, there is no split venue sequence: all games of the best-of-three are played at the higher seed’s park.

How is World Series home field decided?
It goes to the pennant winner with the better regular-season record, regardless of postseason seed. If the two pennant winners have identical records, MLB’s published rule uses head-to-head regular-season record as the first tiebreaker. MLB’s 2026 tiebreaker explainer describes regular-season criteria for resolving ties that affect postseason qualification or seeding, rather than a tiebreaker game.

Does the All-Star Game decide World Series home field?
No. The league whose All-Star team won determined World Series home field from 2003 through 2016. MLB changed the rule before the 2017 season; the pennant winner with the better regular-season record now hosts the opening games. Before the All-Star Game rule, assignment generally alternated between leagues. MLB summarizes the history in its account of World Series home-field advantage.

What does home-field advantage actually provide?
It means hosting the scheduled games at a club’s own ballpark. The venue assignment does not guarantee a win. MLB’s 2022 postseason explainer reported that home teams won 54.7% of postseason games, but its excerpt does not identify the seasons included, so that figure should be treated as a historical aggregate reported at the time—not a current or season-independent probability. The same explainer reported a 55.6% home-team win rate in the 2020 best-of-three Wild Card Series; those games were played without fans, so that result does not isolate the effect of a normal home crowd.
Both figures come from MLB’s 2022 postseason questions and answers.

How to tell which team hosts when comparing two clubs
- Wild Card, Division Series, or LCS: check the seeds; the higher seed hosts according to that round’s venue pattern.
- World Series: compare the pennant winners’ regular-season records, then use head-to-head record if their records are tied.
- Do not apply regular-season record to every round: seeding and the bracket determine hosting before the World Series, and division-winner status can affect how a team is seeded.
For a recent World Series example, MLB’s Dodgers page explains the 2025 home-field assignment using the pennant winners’ regular-season records: Who has home-field advantage in the 2025 World Series?
