“Hippocampus” describes several different approaches to agent memory, not one standard coding-agent architecture. Some systems store information outside the model and retrieve it when needed; one coding-agent tool records engineering decisions in a repository; and a research design compresses older context into a learned module inside the model. These approaches address the same constraint—a limited active context window—but differ in what they retain, how they retrieve it, and what their evaluations demonstrate.
Why coding agents need memory beyond the active context
A coding agent can use only the information available to it in its current context. Yet useful project knowledge may be spread across earlier conversations, repository history, and decisions made by teammates: why an approach was chosen, which alternatives were rejected, or what constraints a later change must preserve. When that information does not fit in the active context, an agent needs either a way to retrieve relevant records from elsewhere or a model architecture that carries information beyond its attention window.

The term “Hippocampus” is used for three related but distinct designs. HIPPOCAMPUS is an external memory system for agents; z10-labs Hippocampus is an MCP server for coding-agent decision records; and Artificial Hippocampus Networks are learned modules that extend long-context language modeling. Their results should not be treated as a direct comparison: the systems target different problems and were evaluated on different tasks.

The key distinction is whether a system retrieves records stored outside the model or changes how the model carries information beyond its active window. Even among external systems, general-purpose agent memory and a decision log serve different purposes: the former can preserve and retrieve prior content, while the latter organizes project decisions and their consequences.

HIPPOCAMPUS: search and exact reconstruction in external memory
The MLSys 2026 paper describes HIPPOCAMPUS as combining two representations: compact binary signatures that support semantic search and lossless token-ID streams that permit exact content reconstruction. Its Dynamic Wavelet Matrix compresses and co-indexes both streams so the system can search in the compressed domain. The authors describe storage growth as linear with memory size for a fixed tokenizer vocabulary. This is an external memory design, not a special coding-agent decision-record format.
In its evaluations on LoCoMo and LongMemEval, the authors report retrieval speedups of 1.1×–31.5× over the evaluated baselines and a 1.1×–14.5× reduction in per-query token footprint. They say task accuracy remained competitive. These figures describe the paper’s evaluated agentic-memory tasks and baselines; they do not establish improved repository-level coding success or coding-agent productivity.

z10-labs Hippocampus: carrying engineering decisions across sessions
The z10-labs project is designed to help answer: “what did we already decide, and why?” Its README describes a stdio MCP server with five tools for querying, logging, classifying, listing, and traversing decision records. Records are plain Markdown files in .decisions/records/, so they can be committed and reviewed alongside the project. A local vector index is derived from those files, and the README says the server checks freshness and incrementally rebuilds the index when records are added, edited, or deleted.
How decisions are retrieved and connected
Retrieval combines embedding-based similarity with explicit relationships between records, including depends-on, supersedes, and conflicts-with. Similarity can find related material; relationship traversal can reveal a decision’s constraints or downstream impact that a similarity result alone may not surface. The format also supports recording consequences and review triggers for substantial decisions, as well as deferred items when a team has deliberately not decided.

What the repository’s documentation says—and its limits
The maintainers describe downloading an embedding model of approximately 30 MB once, followed by offline operation, and provide a Claude Code MCP configuration example. Those are project documentation claims, not independently established results across installations or coding agents.
- Classification can be imperfect: the repository says classification relies on regex and keyword rules, which can misclassify records.
- Retrieval uses a linear scan: the documented vectorized search scans the index rather than using an approximate-nearest-neighbor index.
- Record quality matters: the maintainers say results depend on the quality of the decision record supplied by the agent.
- Validation claims need context: the README reports source-file reads falling from 13/21 to 1/21 to 0/21 across runs. It also explicitly says an associated alternatives result predates a fix and needs re-validation. These small-run counts should not be read as broadly validated performance evidence.
Artificial Hippocampus Networks: learned memory beyond attention
The PMLR 2026 paper takes a model-side approach. A sliding Transformer key-value (KV) cache acts as lossless short-term memory inside the attention window; a learnable Artificial Hippocampus Network (AHN) recurrently compresses information that moves outside that window into fixed-size long-term memory. The paper describes implementations using Mamba2, DeltaNet, and GatedDeltaNet to augment open-weight base language models. Its stated default attention window is 32k, with the AHN activating when sequence length exceeds that window.

For a Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct example, the authors report a 40.5% reduction in inference FLOPs and a 74.0% reduction in memory cache. At 128k sequence length, they report an average LV-Eval score increase from 4.41 to 5.88. The paper also evaluates on InfiniteBench and reports performance comparable to or better than cited full-attention or sliding-window baselines in its experiments. These findings concern the paper’s long-context modeling setups; they do not show faster coding-agent development or better repository-level task completion.

How to judge whether a memory design fits a coding agent
The sources do not provide a head-to-head comparison across all three designs. Their differences suggest practical questions to ask before adopting one:
- Does the agent need verbatim recall? HIPPOCAMPUS explicitly pairs semantic search with a lossless reconstruction stream. The other two designs focus on decision records or compressed long-term state, rather than promising exact reconstruction of arbitrary prior conversation text.
- What should persist? A general memory system may hold prior content; a decision record is intentionally narrower, preserving a choice, its rationale, and related constraints. A learned module carries compressed information through a model’s processing of long sequences.
- Where should information live? External records can be inspected and, in the z10-labs project, version-controlled with the repository. A learned model-side memory is part of the architecture rather than a separate decision log.
- How will stale or conflicting information be handled? The coding-agent project documents explicit relationships such as superseding and conflicting decisions. The sources do not establish a universal approach to resolving stale memories across these different architectures.
- What does the evaluation actually measure? Retrieval speed and token footprint, long-context benchmark scores, and repository decision lookup are different outcomes. A result on one should not be used as proof of another.
For a team whose main question is “what did we already decide, and why?”, a repository-backed decision log is the most directly targeted of these designs. For a system needing retrieval and exact reconstruction of prior content, HIPPOCAMPUS describes those capabilities explicitly. For a model that must process sequences beyond its active attention window, AHN changes the model’s memory architecture. The available evaluations do not establish one as a universal solution for coding agents.
