How was helium discovered?
Helium’s discovery came in stages, and the distinction matters: seeing a spectral line was evidence for an element, not the same as isolating a sample of it. In 1868, Pierre Janssen and Norman Lockyer independently observed an unfamiliar yellow line in the Sun’s spectrum. In 1895, chemist William Ramsay obtained a gas from the uranium-bearing mineral cleveite and recognized the same distinctive line in its spectrum.

Spectroscopy made the first step possible. When light is separated into its component wavelengths, it forms a spectrum. Elements can produce characteristic lines in that spectrum, so comparing those lines can reveal what is emitting light—even when the source is too distant to sample directly. Gustav Kirchhoff’s work on spectral analysis helped establish this approach, which astronomers applied to the Sun’s prominences.
Why was helium discovered in the Sun before it was found on Earth?
The Sun offered a visible spectral signal that astronomers could study, while terrestrial helium had not yet been isolated and recognized as a distinct element. The unusual solar line suggested that an unknown element was present in the Sun. Only later did researchers obtain a terrestrial gas whose spectrum matched the solar clue.

A spectral match was the crucial bridge between the two settings. It let scientists connect an astronomical inference to material in a laboratory, but the two kinds of evidence were not interchangeable: the solar observation came first, and the terrestrial identification required a gas sample.
What Janssen and Lockyer observed in 1868
Janssen’s eclipse observation
On 18 August 1868, French astronomer Pierre Janssen observed a solar eclipse at Guntur, India. In the Sun’s spectrum, he noticed a bright yellow line near the lines associated with sodium. It did not match sodium’s wavelength or any other known element. Janssen reasoned that the relevant solar light might be observed without waiting for another eclipse if it could be isolated.

Lockyer’s independent daylight observation
English astronomer Norman Lockyer independently observed solar prominences in broad daylight on 20 October 1868. His observation was not the same event as Janssen’s eclipse observation, but both men had found the unfamiliar solar line. Their papers arrived at the French Academy of Sciences on the same day, and both received credit for the discovery.

That comparison helped support the proposal that it belonged to an element not yet identified on Earth. Their 1868 paper referred to helium, though it did not yet use that name.

What the early Earth-based clue did—and did not—show
In 1882, Italian physicist Luigi Palmieri saw the telltale yellow line while analyzing lava from Mount Vesuvius. This was an early indication of helium on Earth, but it was not the same milestone as extracting a gas and identifying it through its spectrum. The distinction separates a suggestive observation from the later laboratory confirmation.
How Ramsay identified helium in 1895
In 1895, William Ramsay studied cleveite, a uranium-bearing ore, while seeking argon. Treating the mineral with acids produced an unusual gas. Its spectrum showed the distinctive yellow line already associated with the Sun. Ramsay sent a sample to Lockyer for verification; the American Physical Society’s historical account reports Lockyer’s description of it as a “glorious yellow effulgence.”

The matching line linked the terrestrial gas to the element proposed from solar observations. This made Ramsay’s work a distinct confirmation milestone: unlike the 1868 inference, it involved gas obtained from a mineral and examined in a laboratory. Historical accounts from the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Standards also place the identification work in 1895.

Why the element is called helium
Lockyer named the element helium from helios, the Greek word for Sun. The name preserves the unusual order of discovery: helium was recognized first through sunlight and only later identified in terrestrial material.

The discovery in three stages
- 1868 — Solar inference: Janssen and Lockyer independently observed a yellow spectral line that did not match a known element.
- 1882 — Early terrestrial indication: Palmieri saw the line while analyzing Vesuvius lava, an observation distinct from isolating and identifying a gas.
- 1895 — Terrestrial identification: Ramsay obtained gas from cleveite and recognized the solar line in its spectrum.
