Hearing transforms motion in the air into electrical signals the brain can interpret. Sound first vibrates the eardrum, then moves tiny bones and fluid in the inner ear; sensory cells in the cochlea turn that motion into neural signals carried toward the brain.
How does sound enter the ear?
Sound travels through air as pressure waves. The visible outer part of the ear, called the pinna, helps collect sound and direct it into the ear canal. At the end of the canal, the eardrum—a thin membrane separating the outer and middle ear—vibrates in response. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) describes hearing as a series of steps that changes sound waves in air into electrical signals (How Do We Hear?, last updated March 16, 2022).

How do the middle-ear bones pass along vibration?
Behind the eardrum is the middle ear, which contains three small bones known as the ossicles: the malleus, incus, and stapes. As the eardrum vibrates, these bones move in sequence, transmitting and amplifying the vibration toward the inner ear. The stapes passes the motion into the cochlea.

How does the cochlea turn vibration into movement?
The cochlea is a fluid-filled, snail-shaped structure in the inner ear. Vibration entering it sets its fluid in motion, producing a traveling wave along a flexible structure called the basilar membrane. The sound is no longer being carried as an air-pressure wave at this stage; the cochlear fluid and membrane are moving instead.

How does the cochlea distinguish pitch?
Different places along the basilar membrane respond best to different sound frequencies. This arrangement means pitch information is organized by location within the cochlea. NIDCD describes hair cells near the wide end as responding to higher-pitched sounds and cells closer to the center as responding to lower-pitched sounds. The MSD Manual also explains that hair cells in different cochlear regions respond to different frequencies (Overview of the Inner Ear).
Pitch is not the same as loudness: this location-based mapping concerns how high or low a sound is, not how loud it seems.
How do hair cells create electrical signals?
Hair cells are sensory cells positioned along the basilar membrane. On each cell are tiny projections called stereocilia. As the basilar membrane moves, the stereocilia bend. NIDCD explains that this bending opens channels at their tips, allowing chemicals to enter the hair cells and generating an electrical signal (How Do We Hear?).

This conversion of mechanical movement into electrical signaling is called transduction. In plain terms, the cochlea’s sensory cells translate movement into a form the nervous system can carry.
How does the signal reach the brain?
The electrical activity from the cochlea is conveyed by the auditory nerve toward the brain. The brain interprets the incoming information as sound that can be recognized and understood. Sound waves themselves do not travel all the way from the ear to the brain: the signal changes form along the way, from air pressure to vibration, fluid movement, and then neural signaling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can the pathway analogy explain—and what can it not?
It can help to think of hearing as a relay: the outer and middle ear pass along motion, the cochlea responds to different frequencies by location and converts motion into signals, and the auditory nerve carries information onward. This is only an analogy. It does not mean that each sound feature is encoded as a simple, one-to-one relay, or explain all the brain’s processing of speech and complex sound scenes.

Where can hearing problems occur?
Because hearing depends on a chain of steps, problems at different points can affect hearing in different ways. Hair-cell damage is one cause, not a universal explanation for hearing loss. NIDCD notes that noise-induced hearing loss can involve damage and eventual death of hair cells, and that human hair cells do not grow back (Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)). That description is specific to noise-related damage; it should not be taken to describe every cause of hearing loss.
Hearing aids are not part of the normal hearing pathway. They use a microphone, amplifier, and speaker to make incoming sound louder, which can help some people with sensorineural hearing loss. If the inner ear is extensively damaged, amplification may not make it convert sound effectively (Hearing Aids — Styles/Types & How They Work).
