The xenon-fueled system supplements chemical propulsion; it does not generate the station’s electrical power or replace its chemical engines. “Ion thrusters” is a familiar shorthand, but the technical description is specifically Hall thrusters.
What the thrusters do—and where they are
Tiangong is a crewed research station arranged in a T-shape: Tianhe is the core module, with the Wentian and Mengtian experiment modules attached on either side. The station supports long-duration crew activities and scientific and technical experiments, according to China Manned Space’s station overview. China’s space agency also lists a Hall electric propulsion system among the station’s control and propulsion technologies (CNSA overview).

The thrusters help with orbital maintenance: counteracting the effects that gradually lower the station’s orbit. They are part of a propulsion system on Tianhe, not a source of electricity for the station. The technical term matters: the 2023 engineering overview describes Hall electric propulsion, a type of electric thruster, rather than using “ion thruster” as its formal system name (Space: Science & Technology, 2023).
How the Hall electric propulsion system works
The 2023 design overview describes four Hall thrusters, each rated at 80 millinewtons (mN), and two gas-storage modules. Xenon is the system’s working medium, and the overview gives the system a medium-power range of 0.5 to 10 kilowatts (kW). These are specifications reported in that publication, not a live readout of the station’s current operating state.

Electric propulsion uses electrical energy to accelerate propellant and produce thrust. The resulting push is small compared with the thrust of many chemical engines, but it can be applied over time to adjust a spacecraft’s orbit. Tiangong’s system assists the station’s chemical propulsion rather than displacing it; the design overview presents the two as complementary parts of orbital maintenance.

The 2023 design overview compares two cases over the same 100-day interval. It reports that the station’s orbital altitude would decrease by about 30 km with electric propulsion out of operation, compared with about 7 km under continuous electric-propulsion operation.
| Operating case in the 2023 overview | Reported altitude decrease over 100 days |
|---|---|
| Electric propulsion out of operation | About 30 km |
| Continuous electric-propulsion operation | About 7 km |
The same overview estimates chemical-propellant savings of not less than 800 kg per year. That is a published design estimate, not a guarantee of annual savings under every operating condition. The altitude figures and savings estimate should likewise be read as cases and estimates reported by the authors, not as independently verified current telemetry or proof of present-day performance.

What is established about the system
The engineering overview’s authors, specialists from the Beijing Institute of Spacecraft System Engineering at the China Academy of Space Technology, describe Tiangong as the first space station to use electric propulsion to assist with orbit maintenance. That is the authors’ stated priority claim in their 2023 article, not an independently adjudicated finding.
The official station pages establish the station’s configuration and identify its Hall electric propulsion system, while the technical figures above come from the 2023 design overview. Those sources do not establish whether the thrusters are operating continuously now or how much chemical propellant they have actually saved in service.
