A Gunicorn socket file is a Unix-domain socket: a filesystem-named endpoint through which a local reverse proxy such as nginx connects to Gunicorn. For a system-managed deployment, store the application socket under /run, have systemd create it with deliberate ownership and mode, and configure nginx with exactly the same path. A typical setup uses /run/gunicorn.sock, group-writable mode 0660, and matching www-data ownership.

What a Gunicorn socket file is
Gunicorn normally listens on a network address. If you start it without a PORT environment variable or an explicit bind, the documented default is 127.0.0.1:8000. You can instead bind it to a Unix-domain socket with --bind unix:PATH (or -b unix:PATH), for example:

gunicorn --bind unix:/run/gunicorn.sock myproject.wsgi:applicationA Unix socket is not an ordinary file containing application data. The pathname identifies a kernel-managed local communication endpoint. nginx opens that endpoint and forwards HTTP requests to Gunicorn through it. Because the endpoint is local to the machine, the proxy hop does not require Gunicorn to listen on a network interface.
The socket path is not universal or built into your project. It is chosen by the command line, a Gunicorn configuration file, or systemd. Every component must use the same path, including all parent directories and the protocol syntax in the proxy configuration.

Why deployments commonly use /run
/run is intended for volatile runtime state. It is normally created during boot and is appropriate for a socket that should be recreated when its service starts, rather than preserved as an application artifact in a source tree. A stale pathname left in a project directory can survive a failed restart and make diagnosis harder; a service-managed runtime socket has a clearer lifecycle.
The current Gunicorn deployment example uses /run/gunicorn.sock. An older documented systemd pattern uses /run/gunicorn/socket, creates a dedicated runtime directory with RuntimeDirectory=gunicorn, and supplements it with a tmpfiles.d entry such as:
d /run/gunicorn 0755 someuser somegroup -The exact directory name is a deployment choice. What matters is that systemd or another service manager creates the parent directory at startup, assigns controlled ownership and mode, and removes the need for a developer or deploy script to create the socket manually.
When a project-directory socket can be acceptable
A socket inside a project directory can work for a development setup or a deliberately managed service, but it requires more housekeeping. The service must create the directory, remove an obsolete socket before rebinding when necessary, and ensure that nginx can traverse every parent directory. A project path also couples runtime state to a release directory, which can break when deployments switch symlinks or replace the tree. For production, a stable path under /run is usually easier to operate.
How the socket is created
There are two common arrangements. Gunicorn can create the Unix socket itself when started with a Unix bind, or systemd can own the listening socket and start Gunicorn on demand. The latter is called systemd socket activation; Gunicorn’s documentation describes it as allowing “systemd can create a UNIX socket and launch Gunicorn on demand.” Do not configure two independent processes to compete for the same listening endpoint.

Gunicorn-created socket
With a direct bind, the Gunicorn process needs permission to create the socket in its parent directory. The service account, directory ownership, and startup ordering therefore matter. nginx must not start sending traffic until the socket exists and is accessible.

Create /etc/systemd/system/gunicorn.socket with a [Socket] section like this:

SocketMode=0660Make the corresponding Gunicorn service require the socket unit, then enable and start the socket:
sudo systemctl enable --now gunicorn.socketWith socket activation, systemd can begin listening immediately and launch the service when a connection arrives. The service and socket unit must agree on the endpoint and activation arrangement; changing the pathname in only one unit produces a broken deployment.
Choosing owner, group and mode
The proxy account must be able to open the socket, and it must be able to search (execute permission) every parent directory. The documented example assigns both SocketUser=www-data and SocketGroup=www-data and uses mode 0660. That gives the owner and group read/write access while denying access to other local users.

Debian commonly runs nginx as www-data, but distribution defaults differ. Confirm the actual account used by your nginx service instead of copying the name blindly. If only one local account should connect, mode 0600 is a more restrictive option, provided nginx runs as the socket owner or otherwise has an equivalent access path.

Permissions on the socket alone are not sufficient. A mode such as 0755 on the parent directory permits traversal, whereas a directory that denies execute access to nginx will still cause “permission denied” even if the socket mode looks correct. Grant the least access required and avoid making the socket world-writable.
Making nginx use the same endpoint
Point nginx at the exact path created by Gunicorn or systemd. The documented form is:

}The path must match character for character. Differences such as /run/gunicorn.sock versus /run/gunicorn/socket, a missing directory component, or a socket left in a release directory all result in connection failures. Reload nginx only after the socket exists and its access checks pass.
Gunicorn also documents Unix-socket use with nginx for the uWSGI protocol. That is a separate protocol choice from ordinary HTTP proxying; use the proxy form required by the protocol your application server is configured to speak. A correct filesystem path cannot compensate for a protocol mismatch.

Neither choice is automatically faster: the consulted Gunicorn documentation publishes no performance statistic for this comparison. Choose a Unix socket when the proxy and application are on the same host and you want filesystem-based local access control. A TCP bind is useful when another host must connect or when your existing service tooling is organized around an address and port.
Application socket versus Gunicorn control socket
The application socket is where nginx sends web requests. It must be configured in the Gunicorn bind or systemd socket unit and in nginx. It is unrelated to Gunicorn’s control interface used by gunicornc for runtime management, such as inspecting workers or requesting a graceful action.
The control socket has its own default location: $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/gunicorn.ctl, or $HOME/.gunicorn/gunicorn.ctl when XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is not set. Do not point nginx at that file, and do not loosen its permissions merely to make application traffic work. Control access should remain limited to the administrators or service account that needs it.

- Choose one stable path. For a system service, use a runtime pathname such as
/run/gunicorn.sock. If you choose another path, record it in every unit and proxy configuration. - Choose the ownership model. Identify the nginx account on your distribution, then set the socket owner, group and mode deliberately. Start with
0660for owner-plus-group access or0600when one account alone should connect. - Create the parent directory through the service manager. Use systemd’s runtime-directory support or an equivalent tmpfiles.d rule. Do not rely on a directory that exists only because a previous boot or manual deployment happened to create it.
- Configure the listener. Either use Gunicorn’s
--bind unix:PATHoption or defineListenStream=PATHin a socket unit. Ensure the Gunicorn service is arranged consistently with that choice. - Configure nginx. Set
proxy_passto the exact same Unix-socket path and use the protocol form appropriate to your Gunicorn setup. - Start in dependency order. Enable the socket unit when using activation, then start or reload the service and nginx according to your unit dependencies.
- Test as the proxy account. Use the documented direct check:
sudo -u www-data curl --unix-socket /run/gunicorn.sock httpRun the test with the actual nginx account and your actual socket path if they differ from this example. A successful connection demonstrates that the account can reach the endpoint independently of nginx’s proxy configuration.
Why nginx cannot find the socket
The pathname does not match
Compare the value in ListenStream or Gunicorn’s --bind option with nginx’s proxy_pass. Check spelling, directory components and whether one configuration uses a release-specific path while the other uses /run.
The parent directory is missing
A socket cannot be created when its parent directory was not created at boot or by the service. Inspect the directory itself, then correct the systemd runtime-directory or tmpfiles.d configuration rather than creating an ad-hoc directory that will disappear on the next restart.
The socket unit is not enabled
When using activation, verify that gunicorn.socket is enabled and active. Enabling only gunicorn.service does not necessarily create the socket unit that nginx expects.
Gunicorn failed before binding
The absence of a socket can indicate an application import error, invalid service configuration or another startup failure. Check the Gunicorn service status and journal before changing nginx permissions. Fix the first service error, then verify that the socket appears.
Access is denied
Inspect the socket’s owner, group and mode, and inspect every parent directory for traversal permission. Test with sudo -u as the nginx account. If that test fails, nginx will fail too; correct ownership or group membership rather than making the endpoint world-writable.
The socket is stale or replaced
A pathname can remain after an unclean shutdown or point to a socket created by a different service instance. Stop the relevant service, verify which unit owns the endpoint, and let the service manager recreate it. Avoid deleting runtime files blindly while a listener is active.
Operational practices that prevent recurring failures
- Keep the socket path stable across application releases; place release-specific code elsewhere.
- Let systemd create runtime directories and sockets so boot and restart behavior is deterministic.
- Document the nginx account and the intended owner/group/mode alongside the unit files.
- After changing a path, test the socket directly as the proxy user before investigating higher-level HTTP errors.
- Keep the application socket and the
gunicornccontrol socket separate, with independent permissions. - Do not claim that a Unix socket is remotely reachable: it is a local filesystem endpoint, while TCP exposure depends on the address and network controls.
Recommended arrangement
For a conventional single-host nginx and Gunicorn deployment, use a systemd-managed socket at /run/gunicorn.sock, assign the proxy-compatible owner and group, set mode 0660 unless a stricter 0600 policy fits your accounts, and configure nginx with the identical path. If you need a subdirectory, have systemd create it as runtime state and grant nginx traversal permission. This arrangement keeps ephemeral files out of the project tree, makes boot behavior predictable, and gives you a direct permission and connectivity test when requests fail.
