Pre-release coverage points to a clear headline change in Grand Theft Auto VI: its wanted meter is reported to reach six stars, compared with five in GTA V. The more consequential redesign concerns identification. Police can reportedly use clues tied to clothing, faces, the vehicle and whether Jason and Lucia are together. Those reports describe examples rather than a complete rulebook, so exact escalation thresholds, search times and cooldown formulas remain unconfirmed.
The short answer
GamesRadar+’s 2026 coverage of Rockstar’s Extended Look reports a six-star maximum in GTA VI, while GTA V has a five-star cap. That extra star is the easiest difference to count, but it is not necessarily the biggest change in play. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson described a system that tracks how police identify suspects, including their clothes, faces, vehicle and whether Jason and Lucia are still together.

The same coverage says a crime must be witnessed or set off an alarm before it is reported to law enforcement. It also describes several ways to reduce recognition during a pursuit: changing vehicles, separating the two protagonists and, in a difficult city chase, leaving the streets to move through alleys on foot. These are reported examples from a pre-release presentation and interview, not confirmation that every wanted-level rule has been disclosed.

The most concrete comparison is the wanted-level ceiling. GamesRadar+ reports that the Extended Look showed GTA VI reaching six stars. Its comparison identifies GTA V as having a five-star maximum. In practical terms, the new game has one additional visible level of police attention above the previous title’s cap.

A higher ceiling does not, by itself, explain how quickly a pursuit escalates or what each star changes. The available report does not publish a star-by-star table, thresholds for particular crimes, response-time values or a formula for moving from one level to the next. It is therefore accurate to say that six stars are reported, but not to assign exact meanings to stars one through six.
How a crime reportedly reaches the police
Nelson told GamesRadar+ that a crime in GTA VI needs to be witnessed or must trigger an alarm for it to be reported to law enforcement. His wording establishes the two conditions described in the interview, but it should not be stretched into a complete list of every event that can create a wanted state.
“The wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law,”

That distinction matters because open-world games also contain missions, scripted sequences and activities with their own triggers. The interview explains the reported witness-or-alarm principle; it does not state how every mission state, alarm type or crime category interacts with it. No public timing window is supplied for how long a witness must observe an act, how an alarm is generated, or whether multiple witnesses change escalation.
Identification is the reported design shift
Rather than presenting police awareness as a single anonymous meter, the Extended Look coverage describes several recognition clues. On-screen indicators reportedly represent:
Rank #2
- Easy to use
- Excellent quality products
- Good product for use
- the clothing being worn;
- the suspect’s face;
- the vehicle involved; and
- whether Jason and Lucia are together.
These indicators show what the presentation chose to communicate to the player. They do not prove that police rely on only four pieces of evidence, nor do they establish that removing one indicator always erases all recognition. The report presents selected visible signals and examples of how they can change during an escape.

Clothing and faces
Clothing and facial recognition imply that changing appearance can matter independently of changing location. However, the available coverage does not specify which garments are tracked, how long an outfit remains associated with a suspect, whether a disguise must be complete, or when a face can be identified. It also does not say that changing clothes automatically clears a wanted level.
The safest interpretation is narrower: the game is designed to represent appearance as part of police recognition. The exact persistence and limits of that recognition await a fuller mechanical explanation or hands-on testing after release.
The vehicle clue
The report gives a more concrete example for vehicles. After the player swaps vehicles, the vehicle indicator disappears, and a police car reportedly does not recognize the replacement vehicle. This makes a vehicle change a described method for reducing one source of police identification.
That example should not be converted into a universal escape guarantee. It does not establish that a swap removes clothing or face recognition, that every vehicle change is safe, or that police cannot reacquire the player through another clue. It only documents what the shown system does in the reported scenario.

The pair’s relationship is another reported signal. Nelson says that separating Jason and Lucia can lower police perception of them as a pair. This is a notable difference from treating the player character as a single always-present suspect: the game can apparently model whether the protagonists remain together during a pursuit.

The coverage does not define the distance required to count as separated, how long the reduction lasts, or whether both characters can be tracked independently afterward. It also does not provide a complete rule for switching between them during a wanted state. Separation is therefore best understood as a reported way to reduce recognition, not as a guaranteed wanted-level reset.
What the reported escape examples look like
The available examples describe evasion as a sequence of decisions rather than one universal button or timer. They are useful for understanding the intended design, while still carrying the limits of pre-release reporting.
1. Change the vehicle when the vehicle is the problem
- Identify whether the vehicle clue is still active in the on-screen indicators.
- Swap to another vehicle when an opportunity appears.
- Use the reported result as a reduction in recognition: the vehicle indicator disappears, and a police car does not recognize the new vehicle in the described example.
The report does not say that this action immediately ends the pursuit. A different vehicle addresses the vehicle clue; it does not establish what happens to clothing, face or pair-recognition indicators.

2. Separate Jason and Lucia
When both protagonists are being treated as a pair, splitting up is described as lowering police perception of them together. The report does not publish a precise separation distance or a guaranteed change in star level, so players should read this as a situational tactic rather than a fixed formula.
3. Leave the streets on foot in a hard city chase
Nelson offered a specific recommendation for a three-star city pursuit that is difficult to escape by car:
“Your best option is usually to do this – get off the streets and get on foot into the alleys.”

This advice describes the shown urban environment, where alleys and pedestrian routes can provide an alternative to staying on roads with pursuing vehicles. It is not an independently measured rule about search radii, line of sight or the duration of a three-star state. The quote tells players what Nelson considers the better option in that situation; it does not disclose the underlying cooldown algorithm.
Side-by-side comparison
| Comparison point | GTA V | GTA VI (pre-release reporting) |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum wanted level | Five stars, according to GamesRadar+’s comparison | Six stars shown or reported in coverage of the Extended Look |
| How a crime is reported | Not stated in GamesRadar+’s comparison report | Nelson says a witness or an alarm is required for the crime to be reported |
| Recognition clues described | Detailed recognition rules are not stated in the comparison report | Indicators for clothing, face, vehicle and whether Jason and Lucia are together |
| Vehicle-related evasion | Not stated in the comparison report | The vehicle indicator reportedly disappears after a vehicle swap in the shown example |
| Splitting the protagonists | Not stated in the comparison report | Nelson says separating Jason and Lucia can lower police perception of the pair |
| On-foot urban evasion | Not stated in the comparison report | Nelson recommends leaving the streets and using alleys on foot when a three-star city chase is hard to escape by vehicle |
This table deliberately leaves out mechanics that the cited comparison does not establish. A clean old-versus-new chart would be misleading if it filled missing GTA V details from memory or treated the new indicators as a complete specification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What has not been confirmed
Readers looking for an exact “how do I lose the cops?” formula should be cautious. The reported material does not provide:
- the escalation threshold for each star;
- the crimes or mission events that produce particular levels;
- a police search duration;
- a confirmed cooldown timer;
- a search-radius value;
- the distance or duration needed to separate Jason and Lucia;
- the conditions under which clothing or facial recognition expires; or
- a guarantee that removing one visible indicator clears every other form of recognition.
It is also too early to claim that the four visible icons are the only evidence police can use. They are the clues described in the coverage, not proof that the finished game has no additional systems operating behind the interface.

“Anything where a mission can become systemic and it’s a wanted level or robbery system – we try to make it so that it doesn’t feel inconsistent with how the game works in the open world,”
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio head, as quoted in GamesRadar+’s 2026 report
This explains the design intention, not a list of implementation details. A mission can use a wanted level or robbery system while still having objectives and boundaries that are specific to that mission. The quotation supports expecting continuity between scripted activities and free-roam behavior, but it does not prove that every mission permits every open-world escape tactic.
Release status and platforms
Grand Theft Auto VI remains unreleased at the time of this comparison. Rockstar’s official product page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. The wanted-system details above should therefore be read as pre-release reporting and interview material. Features, interface labels and behavior can still change before launch.
The platform information is useful context for the date and edition being discussed, but no console purchase is required to understand the comparison. Retail listings, physical-edition details and stock terms are separate questions and are not established by the wanted-system coverage.
Bottom line for players comparing the two games
GTA V’s reported five-star ceiling gives way to six stars in GTA VI. More importantly, the new game is being presented as a pursuit system that communicates recognition through appearance, face, vehicle and the protagonists’ relationship to each other. The reported tactics—switching vehicles, splitting up and taking alleys on foot—fit that model by reducing specific ways police identify the suspects.
Until Rockstar publishes or demonstrates more of the finished system, treat the witness-or-alarm rule, the recognition indicators and the escape examples as confirmed descriptions of the material shown, not as a complete formula for every crime, mission or cooldown.
