GTA 6 is built around two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, and their relationship—not simply a menu that lets players pick between two interchangeable leads. Rockstar North development head Rob Nelson says switching will depend on the story: some sections restrict it, some missions hand control from one character to the other, and others let players switch. That points to a more story-shaped system than a straightforward repeat of GTA 5’s three-protagonist setup, though the precise rules for every situation remain unconfirmed.
Why GTA 6 has two protagonists
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page introduces Jason and Lucia as partners who must rely on each other after an easy score goes wrong. The story unfolds across Leonida, and the pair’s connection is central to the premise.

In a Famitsu interview published in an English translation by GTAVice.net, Nelson said Rockstar considered other character configurations, including four protagonists. The concern was that more leads could mean less time with each and make it harder for players to invest in them. He described the game as a story about Jason and Lucia and their relationship: “This game is the story of Jason and Lucia, but at the same time, it is also the story of the relationship between two human beings.”

How switching between Jason and Lucia is expected to work
Nelson described three patterns, rather than one universal switching rule:

- Story-restricted sections: Some moments keep the player with a particular character for narrative reasons.
- Automatic handoffs: In some missions, control moves from Jason to Lucia, or vice versa, as events unfold.
- Player-directed switching: Other missions allow the player to alternate between the two.
His examples make the distinction concrete. A high-rise mission is locked to Jason because of his former special-forces background. In a police escape, the sequence begins with Jason firing from a car, then switches to Lucia driving. These examples suggest character perspective can be tied to what each person is doing, not just offered as a choice of avatar.
When the partnership may affect an activity
Nelson also described a convenience-store robbery that can be attempted alone or with Lucia invited along. That is a specific example of the partner affecting how a shared activity is approached. It does not establish how often this option appears, what additional tactics it offers, or whether similar choices apply to other robberies.

GTA 6 and GTA 5: a design comparison
GTA 5 is the relevant predecessor because it centers on three protagonists. GTA 6’s announced setup is narrower, and Nelson’s explanation emphasizes the relationship between its two leads. The interview also distinguishes story-locked moments, automatic handoffs, and sections where players can switch, so it would be premature to assume the new game simply reproduces GTA 5’s interface or rules. Rockstar’s GTA 5 page establishes the predecessor context; it does not provide enough accessible gameplay detail to support a granular comparison of buttons, animations, or exact mission behavior here.

What remains uncertain
Nelson’s interview describes design patterns and examples, not every condition players will encounter. It does not settle how freely players can switch during general exploration, how frequently each switching pattern appears, or whether all details will remain unchanged in the released game. The evidence here is developer-reported interview material, not a hands-on test of a playable or retail build.
