Groundwater extraction can make the land above an aquifer sink when pumping lowers water pressure in compressible sediments. The pressure drop transfers more of the weight of overlying material to the sediment grains; clay- and silt-rich layers compact, and their cumulative compression lowers the ground surface. This is a mechanical response to changing pressure—not simply water leaving an empty underground space.
How pumping turns into sinking ground
- Water pressure falls. Groundwater occupies pore spaces between sediment grains. Pumping lowers hydraulic head and the pressure of that water.
- The sediment framework carries more load. With the total weight above it broadly unchanged, falling pore-water pressure means more stress is carried by the grain framework. This is called increased effective stress.
- Compressible layers compact. Grains in susceptible sediments shift closer together as the framework bears more stress. Fine-grained clays and silts are especially important; they can drain and compact slowly.
- The surface elevation falls. Compaction across layers adds up through the aquifer system, lowering the land above it. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) identifies thick, compressible fine-grained sediments as a key factor in vulnerability. USGS: Land subsidence
Not every pumped aquifer sinks by the same amount. The result depends on how much compressible sediment is present, how far and how long groundwater levels decline, and the sediments’ previous stress history. In settings with slowly draining fine-grained layers, compaction may continue after the initial water-level decline.

Why some compaction is permanent
Some compaction is elastic: if groundwater pressure recovers, sediments can partly expand and the land may rise. But when stress exceeds what the sediment structure previously experienced, compaction can become inelastic. Pore spaces shrink permanently, reducing the aquifer system’s storage capacity. Raising groundwater levels later does not restore that lost space. USGS: Land Subsidence from Ground-Water Pumping
That distinction matters: groundwater levels can rebound without reversing all the subsidence. A water-level recovery is not, by itself, evidence that the aquifer’s former storage capacity or land elevation has returned.

Why uneven sinking can cause damage
Subsidence often appears as gradual, broad settling, but movement can vary across a landscape. Differential subsidence—adjacent areas sinking at different rates—can change surface drainage routes and stress roads, buildings, canals, pipelines, and other buried infrastructure. Where the ground deforms unevenly, fissures and other ground failures can form. The USGS describes these effects in its Mojave Land-Subsidence Studies.
A regional average can therefore hide local risks. Assessing a place requires attention to how subsidence varies spatially, as well as to drainage and infrastructure exposed to that movement.

What documented cases show
San Joaquin Valley: long-term compaction
A USGS page summarizing historical measurements reports roughly 9 metres of subsidence at a San Joaquin Valley location between 1925 and 1977. A separate USGS report documents roughly 9 metres in the Los Banos–Kettleman City area during 1926–1981, associated with hydraulic-head declines exceeding 120 metres in the confined part of the system. These are distinct locations and time intervals, not one combined measurement. USGS: Land Subsidence in California’s Central Valley · USGS report, 2013

In Coachella Valley, groundwater levels fell by as much as 15 metres (50 feet) through the late 1940s. Colorado River water began arriving in 1949; pumping decreased and groundwater levels recovered during the 1950s through the 1970s. Later, demand that exceeded imported supply was associated with renewed pumping and declining levels, increasing subsidence potential. The sequence illustrates how water sources and pumping patterns can change pressure on an aquifer over time; it does not establish a universal outcome for other basins. USGS report, 2014

Mojave and Morongo basins: local differences matter
USGS attributes local subsidence in the Mojave River and Morongo basins to compaction of clay layers responding to groundwater-level declines. The unevenness of movement can affect drainage and contribute to fissures. These California examples help illustrate the mechanism; they should not be treated as a model for every aquifer system. USGS: Mojave Land-Subsidence Studies
How widespread is the problem?
In a 1999 national assessment, the USGS attributed more than 80 percent of identified land subsidence in the United States to human impacts on subsurface water. A 2018 USGS overview reported that withdrawals of subsurface fluids had permanently lowered more than 123,000 square kilometres of land and waterways in over 50 U.S. areas. These are U.S.-specific historical figures, not current global estimates. USGS: Land subsidence

What to examine when evaluating a location
- Groundwater history: Review groundwater levels and pumping over time, not only current readings.
- Geology: Determine the thickness and compressibility of clay- and silt-rich layers.
- Uneven movement: Look at spatial differences in subsidence rather than relying only on a regional average.
- Exposure: Identify drainage routes, conveyance systems, buildings, roads, and buried utilities that could be affected.
- Type of compaction: Assess whether movement is elastic or inelastic and whether aquifer storage has been lost.
The figures above do not establish current subsidence rates at those places, a globally comparable prevalence, or a universal pumping threshold that triggers sinking. Local conclusions require local evidence from groundwater measurements, geology, and geodetic monitoring.
