Federal government customers accounted for about one-fifth of SpaceX’s 2025 revenue, according to figures from the company’s public filing reported by the Associated Press in May 2026. That makes government work a material part of the business, but it does not mean government contracts account for one-fifth of SpaceX’s valuation. Awards can make future work more visible; they are not the same as revenue already earned, profit, or a separately disclosed slice of the company’s value.
How much of SpaceX’s revenue comes from government contracts?
SpaceX reported $18.7 billion in total revenue for 2025, and federal government revenue represented one-fifth of that total, according to the Associated Press’s account of the company’s public filing in May 2026. Applying one-fifth to the reported total implies roughly $3.7 billion in federal revenue, but that is an arithmetic estimate from a rounded share—not a separately reported government-revenue figure.

The same filing figures put SpaceX’s 2025 operating result at a $2.6 billion loss. The disclosure establishes the scale of federal business, but does not show the profit margin on government contracts or break out revenue contract by contract. It also does not mean all government-related awards were earned in 2025.
Why a contract award is not the same as revenue
A contract’s announced or total value describes a commitment under specified terms; it is not necessarily money paid at award or revenue recognized in that year. SpaceX earns revenue as it performs work under the agreement—such as completing missions, meeting milestones, or providing services. For indefinite-delivery contracts, the timing and quantity of the work can depend on later task orders.

- A COMPLETE LAUNCH-PAD SCENE: This starship model adds a tower, capture arms and storage-tank details around the rocket for a more immersive desktop display.
- MIST AND RED LIGHT IGNITION EFFECT: The built-in humidifier and LEDs work together beneath the rocket to simulate a dramatic launch plume without heat or propulsion.
- SIMPLE RESERVOIR CARE: The integrated water system is straightforward to operate; refill as needed and wipe the atomizing plate regularly to limit mineral buildup.
- HIGH-DETAIL 3D-PRINTED STRUCTURE: Contrasting silver, black and white components make the launch system easy to examine from multiple angles in offices, classrooms and exhibits.
- A DISPLAY GIFT FOR SPACE ENTHUSIASTS: Suited to adult collectors, engineers and students; place on a stable surface and handle the fine tower and arm details carefully.
- Award value: the stated value associated with the contract or modification.
- Revenue: amounts recognized as contracted work is performed, subject to contract terms and accounting.
- Backlog or future visibility: expected work that may be scheduled or ordered later; it is not equivalent to current-year revenue.
That distinction matters when reading large awards. NASA’s crew contract and the Space Force’s national security launch contract use different structures, dates, and definitions. Their headline values should not be added together and treated as a current backlog.
What recent NASA and defense awards show
Recent awards illustrate both the demand for SpaceX’s services and the limits of what a headline contract value tells an investor.

| Program | Reported value and scope | What the value means for revenue timing |
|---|---|---|
| NASA Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap) | NASA said on September 18, 2026, that a $946 million modification added Crew-15, Crew-16, and Crew-17. It brought the total CCtCap contract value with SpaceX to $5.92 billion, with performance through 2030. | The $946 million is the value of the added missions and related services; $5.92 billion is the total contract value after the change, not new revenue from the modification. Work includes ground, launch, in-orbit, return and recovery, cargo transportation, and lifeboat capability. Mission readiness dates are in 2027 and 2028. |
| National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3, Lane 2 | The Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports that the Space Force awarded SpaceX a $5.9 billion contract for 28 launches in April 2025. | GAO describes this as a firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery requirements contract. Its five-year ordering period covers fiscal years 2025–2029, while task-order performance may continue beyond that period. The award is not cash received up front or revenue recognized all at once. |
For NSSL Lane 2, GAO says the providers must complete certification by October 1, 2026. The agreement covers launches and associated mission services, but specific timing depends on task orders and performance. A multiyear award can therefore improve visibility without guaranteeing that all its stated value will be recognized on a particular schedule.
How government contracts can influence valuation
Investors may value government contracts because they demonstrate demand, support a longer view of future work, and can help sustain the facilities, vehicles, and operating scale needed to serve multiple markets. A government relationship can also provide opportunities to develop capabilities that have commercial uses. NASA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG), in a 2018 audit, described NASA’s commercial crew and cargo programs as helping introduce competition and domestic capability, contributing to cheaper access to space for government and commercial customers.

Those factors can support expectations for revenue and strategic value, but the available disclosures do not identify a dollar amount or valuation multiple attributable to government contracts. A whole-company valuation reflects expectations about the business in aggregate, not simply the total value of its public-sector awards. No current contract-driven valuation premium can be calculated from the disclosed figures.
Valuation also depends on what investors expect SpaceX to earn, the costs and capital required to deliver its plans, and the risks around execution, competition, regulation, and future demand. A large contract can add confidence in demand while still leaving uncertainty over timing and profitability.

Why Starlink and execution matter to the same valuation
Government customers are one part of a broader business that also includes Starlink and commercial launch activity. The AP account of the 2025 filing reported $4.4 billion in Starlink operating income alongside SpaceX’s $2.6 billion company-wide operating loss. These are figures at different reporting scopes; they do not reveal the margin on government work or how investors divide the company’s value among business lines.

Delivery risk affects when contracted work can happen and how confidently investors can forecast it. In a March 10, 2026, statement about its Human Landing System (HLS) audit, NASA OIG said: “While NASA has controlled contract costs and effectively collaborated with the providers, lander development challenges will delay planned Artemis launch dates.” That supports a conclusion about schedule uncertainty, not a quantified loss or a specific reduction in SpaceX’s valuation.

Other risks include launch reliability, certification, procurement decisions, federal budget priorities, and whether future awards follow current ones. These can affect the timing or amount of work; the cited disclosures do not quantify their financial effect on SpaceX.
What the historical NASA awards do—and do not—tell us
NASA OIG reported that NASA had awarded $7.7 billion to SpaceX for commercial crew and cargo activities through December 2017. The audit described awards for activities that would take place through 2024 and explained that award totals included past and future expenditures committed through task orders or milestones. This history shows how public partnerships supported SpaceX’s development, but it is neither a current annual revenue figure nor a measure of today’s contract backlog or valuation.
What cannot be determined from public figures cited here
The available figures do not disclose SpaceX’s standalone government-contract margins, contract-by-contract revenue recognition, the full composition of current backlog, or the share of enterprise or equity value investors assign to government work. A January 2026 Reuters report, citing unnamed people familiar with earlier company results, estimated 2025 revenue at $15–16 billion and EBITDA at about $8 billion; the later filing figures reported by AP supersede that earlier revenue estimate. Reuters also reported that banks privately estimated an IPO valuation above $1.5 trillion. That was a reported expectation, not a realized valuation, and it does not identify how much of any valuation investors attribute to government contracts.
