Google Voice gives you a separate number for calls, texts, and voicemail. You can use that number in the Voice app or at voice.google.com; if you link and verify other phones, calls to your Voice number can also ring there. Linking a phone does not make its carrier number your Google Voice number, and texting has limits—including unsupported short codes and restrictions on bulk messages.
What a Google Voice number is
Google Voice is a calling, texting, and voicemail service built around a Google Voice number. Personal users in the US can search for an available number by city or area code. They can make and receive calls in the Voice app or on the website; on a computer, call notifications require being signed in with the browser window open.

The Voice number is distinct from any phone number you link to it. Google says it saves and processes call, text, and voicemail information, so Voice should not be treated as an anonymous forwarding alias. See Google Voice Help’s Set up Google Voice.
How Google Voice forwarding works
Call forwarding lets calls to your Voice number ring on linked phones. It does not transfer a linked phone’s carrier number into Voice. To add a destination, open Voice settings, add a linked number, and verify it: Google sends a code by text to a mobile number or calls a landline with the code. You can turn forwarding on or off for a device or linked number without removing that number from your account.
#1 Best Overall
- Ooma has been rated the top phone service by Consumer Reports.
- You can link up to six numbers, according to Google’s current help page checked in 2026.
- A phone number already linked to another Voice number cannot be linked again.
- Forwarding calls to an automated system is unsupported. Google directs organizations that need an auto attendant to its Workspace offering.
- Linked numbers are not available to SIP Link users; business users should check their account setup with an administrator.
Forwarding is optional: you can use Voice in the app or browser without having calls ring on linked phones. If you want to move an eligible mobile number into a personal Google Voice account, that is a separate porting process, not call forwarding.
Can Google Voice receive texts, and how are they sent?
Texts are sent and received in the Voice app or website over Wi-Fi or mobile data, rather than through the phone plan’s SMS allowance. Google’s consumer help page lists no-charge personal texts to US, Canadian, and Puerto Rican numbers, except numbers in American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands. It says messages can be received from anywhere in the world. The same consumer geography should not be assumed for paid Voice subscriptions: the cited Google page says texting on those plans is available only in the US.

“No charge” for a listed destination does not mean the connection is always free. Mobile data limits and charges can apply, and using data abroad without Wi-Fi may incur carrier roaming fees. Google also says Voice is not compatible with iMessage; on iOS, a phone number may need to be deregistered from iMessage for messages from iPhone users to reach Voice. See Google Voice Help’s texting guidance.

- Messages longer than 160 characters sent to a non-Voice number are split into multiple messages, according to Google’s current help page checked in 2026. Carrier handling of the resulting messages can vary.
- A group text can include up to eight participants, including the sender.
- Images larger than 2 MB are resized; GIFs larger than 2 MB are not sent.
Why verification texts may not arrive
Google Voice does not send texts to five- or six-digit short codes. Some banks and subscription services also refuse to send verification or alert messages to Voice numbers. If a service requires a mobile carrier number or rejects your Voice number, use your carrier number instead; a setting in Voice cannot make an unsupported short code work.

Why Google Voice is not for bulk texting
Google describes Voice messaging as intended for interactive personal conversations, not bulk messaging. Repeating the same text, sending links, or sending many messages in a short period may trigger restrictions. Messages can be blocked, and repeated behavior or serious abuse can lead to account suspension. Do not rely on Voice as a campaign, alert-blast, or business texting platform.
Call routing and possible charges
Google says almost all calls made from the US to the US and Canada are free. Some US and Canadian numbers cost one US cent per minute, and calls outside the US use listed international rates, which may vary by destination and local currency. Check Google’s calling rates and routing information for the destination and account in question.

Not every call necessarily travels through Google Voice. If a call is not routed through Voice, your mobile carrier may charge you. When an internet connection is unstable, the app may offer carrier minutes instead; those can also incur carrier charges. Pay attention to the app’s routing or cost notice before placing a paid call. Wi-Fi can avoid mobile-data use for Voice texts, but it does not eliminate possible charges from other routes or services.

Forwarding keeps your Voice number and rings another phone when someone calls it. Porting moves an eligible mobile number into a personal Voice account. Google’s current personal-account help page, checked in 2026, lists a $20 porting fee, up to 48 hours for a phone-number port, and up to three business days for texts to transfer. These are Google’s stated service timelines, not guaranteed completion times. Not every mobile number is eligible, and Google advises not cancelling the existing plan until it confirms the port is complete. Details are in Google Voice Help’s number-porting instructions.

Personal Google Voice and work accounts are different
The setup and porting guidance above for personal accounts does not necessarily apply to work or school Google Voice. Workspace accounts are managed, and Google directs users to their administrator for porting support. For a transfer between personal Google accounts, only the Voice number transfers; call history and voicemail do not. Use instructions for the account type you actually have, rather than assuming a managed account follows personal-account steps. See Google’s porting guidance.
Quick Recap
Choose which number and call setup to use
| Choice | What it means | Best fit or caution |
|---|---|---|
| Voice app or browser only | Calls use Voice in the app or website; no linked phone needs to ring. | Useful when you want to handle calls in Voice and have an internet connection. On a computer, call notifications require an open, signed-in browser window. |
| Voice plus linked phones | Calls to the Voice number can ring verified linked phones when forwarding is enabled. | Convenient if you want calls to reach another phone. Linking does not convert that phone’s number into the Voice number, and carrier charges may apply if a call uses the carrier network. |
| Voice number for ordinary texts | Texts go through the Voice app or website over Wi-Fi or mobile data. | Suitable for interactive conversations within Voice’s supported destinations and limits. |
| Carrier number for verification | Use the number from your mobile carrier when a service requires it or rejects Voice. | Prefer this for short codes, bank or subscription messages that do not support Voice, and services requiring a carrier mobile number. |
| Personal versus Workspace account | Personal and managed accounts have different setup and support paths. | For a work or school account, ask the administrator which procedures apply. |
