During navigation, GPS, route, and some device-sensor data can also help power real-time traffic and disruption features. Google describes these inputs publicly, but does not publish a complete prediction formula or a quantified ETA-accuracy guarantee.
What information does Google Maps use?
Google describes traffic estimates as a blend of observations from phones and other sources, rather than a single live feed. The inputs do different jobs and should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Information channel | What it can contribute | What Google’s explanation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Aggregated phone location data | Movement patterns that help identify congestion and estimate travel times. | Google says it combines anonymous phone data with data from other phones so an individual device cannot be singled out. It also says starting points and destinations are permanently deleted. Google’s traffic data explanation does not quantify this channel’s relative contribution. |
| Licensed partner data | Traffic and incident information that supplements phone observations. | Google names governments, non-profits, schools, and businesses as examples of partners from which it licenses data. It does not identify specific suppliers in the reviewed explanation. Google’s traffic data explanation |
| Navigation data | GPS location, route details, and device-sensor information, such as barometer readings, can support real-time traffic, disruptions, weather, and faster-route suggestions. | Google says collection for turn-by-turn navigation starts shortly after you tap Start and ends when you arrive or exit navigation. It says needed navigation data is deleted after processing and map updates are not associated with a Google Account or device. Google Maps navigation data help |
| User incident reports | Reports about specific events such as crashes, construction, or road closures. | Reports may appear for other drivers approaching the reported location, and a nearby driver may be asked to confirm whether an event remains. Categories and availability vary by region. Google Maps incident-reporting help |
| Dash-camera imagery from third parties | Evidence for checking certain map-detail changes, such as speed-limit updates and new traffic signs. | Google says it licenses short, silent clips from trusted companies and does not publish the imagery. This is a map-update input, not evidence that an individual dash camera supplies live congestion data. Google’s imagery explanation |
How does it turn movement into a traffic estimate?
In broad terms, Google can compare how phones are moving along roads with historical and current information, then combine those observations with partner data to estimate travel times and identify slowdowns. When you navigate, Google says route and GPS information, along with device-sensor data, may also be used to improve features such as real-time traffic and faster alternatives.
That is a description of the inputs, not a full account of the computation. Google’s reviewed support pages do not disclose the complete forecasting formula, how much weight each source receives, or an independently measured ETA accuracy rate. There is no published figure in those pages that can establish how accurate an estimate is for a particular trip.

How do incidents get onto the map?
Maps users can report incidents, including crashes, construction, closures, and other disruptions. Google says a report can be shown to other drivers as they near its location during navigation. A nearby driver may see the prompt “Is this still here?” and confirm whether the report still applies.
That confirmation can help keep a report current, but it is not a guarantee that every incident will be reported or verified. Report categories and availability differ by country or region. Google advises users to submit reports only when it is safe to do so; do not handle a phone while driving.
What do the traffic colors and symbols mean?
The traffic layer summarizes road flow with colors, while symbols identify reported incidents. Google’s legend uses:

Time Lapse Parking Mode provides continuous surveillance by offering a condensed overview of any events that may occur during parking periods. *Please note that the parking monitoring function requires a separate hardwire kit.
- Green: no delays.
- Orange: medium traffic.
- Red: delays; darker red indicates slower traffic.
Incident icons can mark events such as crashes, construction, or closures. Traffic information is not available everywhere, so a road without colored traffic data should not automatically be read as a road with no congestion. Google Maps traffic layer help
Does a dash camera send live traffic to Google Maps?
Google says it licenses short, silent video clips from trusted third-party companies that collect imagery with commercial and consumer dash cameras. The stated purpose is to detect and verify real-world map changes, including speed-limit changes and new traffic signs. Google says it does not publish the imagery. This describes one way some map details may be updated; it does not establish that a person’s consumer dash camera directly feeds live traffic or congestion data to Google Maps. Google’s support pages describe phone data as anonymous and say it is combined with data from other phones so that a device cannot be singled out. Google also says starting points and destinations are permanently deleted. For navigation, it says needed data is deleted after processing and map updates are not associated with a Google Account or device.

These are Google’s descriptions of its handling practices, not independent privacy-audit findings. Its navigation help page says navigation data has “always helped – and continues to help – Google Maps provide real-time features, such as traffic conditions, disruptions and the ability to find the fastest route.” The page does not name an individual speaker or give a publication date. What Google does not disclose
- The complete formula used to forecast traffic or calculate an ETA.
- The relative contribution of phone observations, partner feeds, reports, and other inputs.
- A quantified ETA-accuracy guarantee or an independently measured accuracy figure in the reviewed support pages.
- Specific traffic-data suppliers or statistics for data volume and incident counts.
So the useful short version is that Maps combines multiple signals to estimate conditions, while its public documentation explains broad categories rather than the full system or its performance.
