How Google Home Speaker Groups Sync Audio Across Rooms

Google Home speaker groups play media across compatible devices. Learn how to set one up, which devices can join and how to fix a speaker that plays late.

Google Home speaker groups let compatible speakers, displays and streaming devices play the same media across rooms. Most setups need no manual tuning; if one device consistently sounds late, Google Home provides a per-device Group delay correction control. Google’s public help pages explain how to set up and adjust groups, but do not disclose the underlying synchronization technology.

How does Google Home keep audio in sync across rooms?

When you play media to a speaker group, compatible devices play it together as a multi-room group. Google says many devices have such a short inherent delay that playback is already in sync without adjustment. If a device is consistently and noticeably behind, you can correct its timing with Group delay correction.

Google’s documentation describes the user-facing behavior and adjustment, not the technical mechanism behind it. It does not specify a clock protocol, buffering method, network arrangement or synchronization algorithm, so those details cannot be stated as fact.

Which devices can join a speaker group?

Google’s group-management guidance lists Google Home Speaker, Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen.), Google Home Max, Google Home Mini (1st gen.), Google Home and supported Nest Hub displays. Its multi-room guidance also covers supported streaming devices, Nest Wifi point and Pixel Tablet in Hub mode. A Pixel Tablet must be attached to its Charging Speaker Dock to join. Chromecast (1st gen.) is not supported for this feature. See Google’s current speaker-group device and management guidance and Google’s multi-room audio guidance for the device list and setup details.

Compatibility is a practical first filter: check Google’s current list for the exact device and setup you have. A compatible speaker such as Nest Audio can serve as a room’s standalone speaker, but buying another speaker is optional if you already own devices Google supports.

How do I create a speaker group?

  1. Open the Google Home app on a phone or tablet.
  2. Select the devices you want to include in the group.
  3. Name the group and save it. Choose a name that is easy to say if you plan to start playback by voice.
  4. Start playback by choosing the group in a Cast-enabled app or asking Google Assistant to play media on the group by name. Google’s speaker-group setup instructions cover managing groups; its Google Assistant media-control guidance covers voice playback and moving media between devices.

You do not need a saved group to add rooms to an ongoing session: use the Google Home app’s mini-player to add, remove or move devices during playback. During a group session, a voice volume command normally changes the device that heard it; specify the group if you want the command applied to the group. The app also provides group and individual-device controls.

Why are my Google speakers out of sync?

A small timing difference can become noticeable when speakers are near one another or when one audio path adds delay. Google advises changing Group delay correction only when the difference is both consistent and significant. Its undated support guidance gives these typical category ranges, while cautioning that individual models may fall outside them:

Device category Typical delay range in Google’s guidance
Speakers 0–40 ms
Soundbars 0–80 ms
Receivers 0–70 ms

These are Google’s typical ranges, not measurements or guarantees for a particular model. Its Group delay correction troubleshooting guidance identifies Chromecast, Chromecast Audio, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer (4K) and speakers that work with Google Cast as device types that can sometimes contribute to group delay.

How do I correct a device that plays late?

  1. Cast music to the affected group. Make the adjustment while the group is playing so you can hear the result.
  2. Stand between the speakers that sound out of sync and balance their perceived loudness as you listen.
  3. Open the audio settings for the device that plays last and adjust its Group delay correction until the sound aligns.
  4. Work on one device at a time. If more than two devices are in the group, isolate the out-of-sync pair and mute the others while adjusting.
  5. Recheck after changing the audio setup. If a streaming device has been connected to another speaker or TV, reset its correction to zero and test again; the previous setting may no longer be right.

The correction applies to that device in every speaker group it joins, so a change made for one group can affect its timing in another.

Can I add a Bluetooth speaker to a Google Home group?

Yes, if the Bluetooth speaker is paired with a Google Home or Nest device: add the paired Google device to the speaker group. Bluetooth is an optional way to extend playback, but Google warns that it can introduce playback delay. See Google’s instructions for using Bluetooth speakers with Google Home or Nest devices.

What happens if I edit a group during playback?

Editing or deleting a saved group while it is casting stops playback on the group’s audio devices. Restart casting from a compatible app or use a voice command after you finish the change.
